Damn, amazon still has their sale going on. I guess i'll buy another one since I'm bored. If it's 14.99, for some reason I want it less. Aside from 12 angry men, nothing really screams essential that I don't already have. With that said....

Purple Noon and Broadcast News keep calling my name.

Default Heaven's Gate

I've been deciding whether or not I should blind buy the Criterion BD edition of Heaven's Gate for the longest time. Is this film (which got terrible reviews when it was released in 1980) really worth owning?

I really enjoyed it but, truth be told, it's a slow-moving film. Beautiful to look at though. (The scenery and Isabelle Huppert.)

I adore the film. You may need to stretch a little at the 2 hour mark, but its worth it. It has some of the most striking imagery this side of Visconti's The Leopard. It's grand, it's excessive, it's at times unwieldy, but always magnificent. Beware that it is a bit heavy handed in its Message ( tge struggles of being an immigrant)

Criterion really knocked it out of the park with the release (though it could have used a few more extras).

Are you a fan of historical epics/ westerns, jw007?

I am not a fan of either of those genres, and I also adore this film. I think he should buy it, no questions asked.

Did you sister end up liking the film? Is that even appropriate to ask?
I completely agree. Yes haha that's appropriate to ask. My sister an her girlfriend LOVED it. Her girlfriend is more into lesbian films if they're watching gay cinema I think but my sister is more into the boys when it comes to gay cinema.

It disappoints her that there isn't many genuinly well made lesbian films and tends to get irritated by lesbian characters and I agree. Most lesbian films I've seen have been really mediocre or worse. An example of her irritation towards lesbians would be Queer as Folk (US). She fell in love with all the boys but absolutely HATED the lesbian couple. It seems that most of the time Lesbians are either dramatic b*****s or sappy sooks.

I also bought Shelter for them, a good little gay flick released in the UK. They enjoyed that a lot too but not as much as Weekend. The leading boys came off too straight. No chemistry and they seemed uncomfortable getting intimate.

Anyway, I have gone a bit off subject. I hope to see Criterion release more independant contemporary cinema in their collection. Yes

There you go.

Seriously though, has there ever existed an actor more perfectly suited for a western than Kris Kristofferson? The man fills the role and then some.

Second Sight have their own release of Heavens Gate planned too. I was a little disappointed by The Deer Hunter but I still have a positive feeling towards it and the desire to rewatch it. I am interested in Heavens Gate honestly from a visual stand point but am hoping for some worthwhile substance aswel. I have a feeling that Second Sight may give us more extras so I'm holding out to see first.

Not a fan of Westerns at all even though my name is Jon Wayne. Funny, isn't it? I have to admit, the only Western I ever owned on BD/DVD/VHS was Tombstone. Although I suppose you can say that Dances With Wolves is a Western as well (and I love that film and own it on BD). Also, I suppose The Frisco Kid also counts as a Western (funny film that I also have on DVD). I don't believe a film such as The Postman counts as a Western but for some reason I liked Kevin Costner's Open Range the one time I saw it in the theater. Of course I enjoyed Back to the Future Part III as well, but I'm not into Spaghetti Westerns (although Sergio Leone made some fine ones) or John Wayne Westerns (The Searchers, True Grit, Rio Bravo, Red River) or even the old Clint Eastwood Westerns (The Outlaw Josey Wales, Unforgiven, The Good the Bad and the Ugly). I do of course admire John Ford and Howard Hawks' Westerns. As a former film major in college, I came to appreciate some of the great Westerns but I just never was intrigued.

I suppose the greatest Western I like isn't even truly a Western. That would be Star Trek. Yes, the original TV series from the 1960s I'm referring to. Those were basically Westerns in space with morality plays. Great shows indeed.

Ultimately since I am a fan of Kris Kristofferson (saw him perform live in concert too a few years ago), I am probably going to buy Heaven's Gate. Why did the critics back then bash this film so much? Who knows.

No worries going off topic isn't a sin. Glad to hear that though, but I have come across a few good lesbian films via Netflix and my Queer Theory film class, well made but a little dark I would say the following fall into "Heavenly Creatures", "Sister My Sister" to name a couple arent ones that arent as well known as say "High Art" and some of the better lesbian films out there.

Gene Rodenberry referred to it as "Wagon Train in space" so it did have some western in it's veins.

My dreams have come true! Yes yes yes!

So glad I waited instead of importing the StudioCanal version. Criterion is top notch.

I myself can't stand John Wayne, save for "The Searchers." Did you ever try "The Proposition"? It's hard to say if you will like it for sure, but it's an outback western and it's written by good old Nick Cave. I would also HIGHLY recommend "Once Upon a Time in the West" if you haven't delved into it yet.
---------------------------------
If Mulholland Drive is released in Criterion it's going to be in my top 5 Criterions for sure.

I'm not sure how much you keep up with modern shoegaze-y music, but these are definitely two bands you should give a shot. Whirr is more traditional shoegaze, while Pity Sex blends shoegaze with 90's emo. http://whirrband.bandcamp.com/ http://runforcoverrecords.bandcamp.c.../feast-of-love
