I took advantage of the WB Shop sale on the Rio Bravo Blu-ray for $10. They must have repressed a few copies, and it's better than paying $47 on Amazon. With my luck, Criterion will probably announce this movie next month, but I miss my old DVD of the movie and have had a hankering to watch it again. One of my favorite John Wayne flicks.

For a fun triple feature night, watch Rio Bravo, then the 1968 Night of the Living Dead, and, finally, the original John Carpenter version of Assault on Precinct 13. It's basically the same storyline in all three movies, but each movie brings a unique flavor to the framework.

sounds delightful and action packed. I'd never thought about those three movies in a lineage of sorts, but it definitely makes sense. I'll have to watch the trio in succession some time.

You want a really fun and interesting triple feature, try YOJIMBO, followed by FISTFUL OF DOLLARS and LAST MAN STANDING (although it may be too tempting not to throw in SANJURO right after YOJIMBO).

The only "screw up"I see here is yours. The assumption that everything would still be included, on a re-release. That sounds more like a you problem. Maybe if you read the specs first then you wouldn't have to rant to justify your actions?

Jon Mulvaney has not responded to me about a replacement Shoah case and I'm getting pissed off. Looks like if I don't hear by the start of next week, I'll have to return it to Amazon and get a replacement.

I would snap up House of Games in a second but if I could only have one Mamet film on BD it wouldn't by director-centric standards even be a Mamet film: Glengarry Glen Ross hands down.

Well suffice to say that I have lost a lot of my respect for Criterion and I will never be upgrading to Blu on any other Criterions in the future.

If it makes you feel better, I've never gotten a response the 3 or 4 times I've contacted them about problems/questions, so consider yourself lucky to have gotten responses in the past at all

you know what, I've been planning on watching Miami Vice, which I've never seen, on account of your rave reviews, sounds great. many thanks. I'm going to get around to it sometime later this summer and will let you know - but I'm psyched about the formal aesthetic of being thrown into the action and not really being able to come up for air, sounds engrossing, effective, and thoughtful.

I believe that the three characters are a "band of outsiders" in more ways than one. They are not necessarily likeable people to us the viewers, and they do not fit into the midst of society, but they are also outsiders to one another. These three are constantly locking horns with one another on a psychological level, and they are never really in tune as to what is going on in minds of one another.

The cafe dance scene is so awesomely memorable, because it is the only moment in the movie when these outsiders to the world and to one another are acting in perfect sync and harmony as a team. Even then, though, the voiceover narrator informs us that the three characters are thinking along entirely different lines of thought while they appear to move as one.

I think that another cafe scene, with the three characters bumping one another aside on the seat, is more symbolic of how their relationship functions during the rest of the film.

These three characters do exude a coolness, but cool does not always translate to likeable. As the late Kurt Cobain sang, "I'd rather be dead than cool."
Or, as some of my Atlanta friends and I are fond of saying, "Cool people are the stupidest people in the world."

The Godard films are adept at portraying cool characters who are not always pleasant characters. Quentin Taratino blatantly takes his cue from Godard's stylistic character choices, with favorable results.

OR you could even burn a copy of that second disc and move THAT into a new case and then sell off your old edition!
Then you have your new mega-edition and sell off that old dvd copy on ebay.

That was a strange movie, I really need to re-watch it sometime. I missed a lot of the layers in that movie, I'm sure it'll get better with repeated viewings.
