I picked up City Lights today. I was a little ticked that B&N wouldn't let me use a 20% off coupon they sent me, but at the same time am okay with paying $17.99 + tax (... using the B&N 10% discount for members). I'm not clear on why the coupon wasn't accepted ... something about since it was already discounted by 50%. Bah! ... they've done it in the past. Oh well ...... sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. But I finally have this gem, so I feel like a winner anyway.

I bought it today too....literally just got back from Barnes & Noble. The dual format case is exactly the same in terms of dimensions as the standard blu-ray format case. I haven't opened it yet but its looking good.

Do you think the fact that there was a holiday on Monday (Veterans Day), it might be delayed until next Monday? That's what happened with Columbus day last month (that came out on a Monday).

I need to see Domino now. Tony Scott was a madman and he died a madman by jumping off the Golden Gate bridge.

Jenny aside, it's a beautiful film and, of course, with her it's a gorgeous film! I think it and "'Crocodile" Dundee were the films for me that showed off the beauty of Australia.
Do you by any chance live in Australia too? I noticed you wrote "surrounded by water". I loved Walkabout. Jenny Agutter was damn attractive back then (but yes, a bit young). Roeg might have been a pervert in some ways.

I'm watching House right now. It's so stupid, but so freakin hilarious! The editing is so horrible, that I'm laughing my ass off!

Picked up Bottle Rocket and Rosemarys Baby. Was very undecided about Rosemarys Baby and La Notte and Things to Come. I'll eventually add those two, La Notte and Things to come, latter.

This sale end on the 2nd of Dec, right? Still a long way to go. Will probably pick up two for the Thanksgiving week.

(Prepare your eyeballs for madness)

It's too bad Werner Herzog's never made a documentary about him

For anyone who is interested, Frances Ha was added to Netflix streaming today. I will probably watch it soon, so I can decide whether to pick it up during the sale.

Very proud of this.

My largest Criterion order ever.

I live in New Zealand so I can't walk in store and pick up. So ordered on-line from B&N:

Just finished watching Frances Ha. It reminded me of Whit Stillman's work (star Greta Gerwig was in his Damsels in Distress). I liked it, but I wish I'd known it would be available on Netflix streaming on Day 1, mostly because I chose it over other movies that are not on Netflix (like City Lights). It's also a bit light on extras.

Likewise don't live nearby (Aus) and just put in my first Criterion order. This actually is my first lot of Criterion titles (well, blu - I got the DVD of Marienbad years ago), so for the meantime, this will be my entire collection of Criterion blus -

Marketa Lazarova
Senso
Close-up
Pale Flower

Seventh Seal
Red Shoes
Seconds

Larisa Shepitko Eclipse
Pearls of Czech New Wave Eclipse

First 4 are blind-buys. Although the only really, really blind buy is Marketa - I love Visconti, Kiarostami and Japanese New Wave (but am new to Shinoda) so those three look pretty safe, and Marketa just looks so cool (and the Criterion has had nothing but universal praise) that I'm happy with those. The next 3 I've seen before and am splitting cost with my bro, and the last 2 are blind buys again, on DVD.

Already thinking towards next sale - I'm thinking Bigger than Life, Lola Montes, Sweet Smell of Success and Colonel Blimp, and whatever great releases come out between now and then (Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion looks awesome, for example). Although I might pick up the other Eclipse sets I want, like late Ozu and Kobayashi - as reticent as I am to go back to DVD, some of these releases are too essential and good value I think.

Anyway, massively excited!!!

I loved Daisies from the Czech New Wave set. I've been thinking of doing a double feature with it and House but I'd be running the risk of a sensory overload.

Great pickups. Nice start.

I have the Italian release of Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion on blu. Excellent movie, fantastic transfer.

If City Lights isn't one of the greatest things ever made, then I truly don't know what is. I absolutely loved it. Chaplin is the best!

It looks amazing. The DVD was terrible but this...wow. I hope they extend the sale one more week so this is included. If not, I will have to get it during he 40% sale.

Thanks, Badas. Yeah Investigation (and more broadly, Petri) hadn't been on my radar until the Criterion announcement, strange seeing how much I love Italian cinema of the period. Good to hear another strong recommendation, and Pro-B's review of the Criterion excited me a lot. Shame I'll have to wait until the next sale!
