I really need to see that version. I am always impressed with Jean Gabin's work.

Just curious, have you seen the Ramond Bernard version?

From Criterion.com:

Les misérables
Raymond Bernard 1934

"Hailed by film critics around the world as the greatest screen adapation of Victor Hugo’s mammoth nineteenth-century novel, Raymond Bernard’s dazzling, nearly five-hour Les misérables is a breathtaking tour de force, unfolding with the depth and detail of its source."

If you have seen this one and still think the 1958 version is superior, that's saying something!

Nope. I have not seen the 1934 version yet, so I cannot compare it to the 1958 version just yet. This was one of the Flash Sale items under consideration, but I decided to wait and check it out later, since I've got a nice backlog of unwatched stuff at present.

I've always heard that the 1934 version is the absolute best film adaptation of the novel, though.

Sooooo, yeah I broke down and broke my rule and placed another order this morning...

I ended up getting 2 more:

The Killers
Eclipse Series 33: Up All Night with Robert Downey Sr

As well as a Criterion T-shirt. Got me to $58 so I got the free shipping... I'm really looking forward to the Robert Downey Sr set, it looks to be a real treat. Figured it was worth the blind buy.

Now I really am DONE!

I sure do hope so. I ordered the Criterion DVD of Blast of Silence yesterday, along with Pickup on South Street, so they'll probably be announced for upgrade soon, and I'll be taking one for the team.

I have to go back and watch that one again. It's been a while. Love that film.

It is at times like these that I am glad of the shipping costs to Canada, it stops me going back for a 2nd bite of the cherry. For me the first item cost $9.95 with additional items costing $2.95. It makes no sense to make more than one order (unless you are rich, which I ain't )

Yeah, I almost dumped my cart because I didn't want to pay shipping, and couldn't find another movie that jumped out at me. But then I remembered I wanted a t-shirt.... soooo, now I have that second order. Call me a sucker. But hey, gettting closer to $50 loyalty card, only 209 to go.

Welcome to the "I don't need no stinkin' willpower" club. We meet every 3rd Thursday down at the YMCA. I placed a second order too and snagged the Downey set in that one as well.

PS: Coffee and refreshments will be served after the meeting.

Didn't see email until late so missed out on Thief, King of the Hill, and Blow Out. But was able to replace Harold and Maude which had gone missing, added Jubal and The Game.

Default "Just when I thought I was out..."

Even though I just told myself I was going to start slimming down my collection, Criterion has pulled me back in!

Man...they know exactly what they are doing. They have the head-games down pat with that ticking clock on their website!

I ordered the following...

- Blue is the Warmest Color (saw it in the theatre and fell in love with it. NetFlix streaming quality will not hold me over until the special edition arrives)
- Frances Ha
- M
- Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion (rented this from NetFlix a few months ago and loved it)
- The Killing (need to get closer to completing my Kubrick library)

and, despite not really knowing much about the series, I bit on the massive Zatoichi box set. For that price, I am willing to take a journey into some uncharted cinema.

I was about to order the Cassavetes set too, but I got a "like new" one on Amazon cheaper with some Amazon points I had.

Yup...austerity measures must be taken until my next paycheck in two weeks.

Also, anyone thinking about ordering Quadropehnia owes it to themselves to just do it! Probably one of the better teenage rebellion films I have seen and the music is incredible, both from The Who and the time period musicians. Of course, I am biased since I wear me parka and dress like a mod every day at work (although I am bald, so I guess I am closer to an original skinhead).

Really hoping we get an upgrade to HD since a transfer is available.

I'll see you there and bring the donuts... no will power there either.

And the Downey set looks really cool. I've looked at it a few times, but figured now was the right time to buy it. For $20 it's worth the blind buy. And if I really don't like it, I figure I can put it up for trade over in that forum. I think I may watch it first and post after. Let me know what you think once you get yours and watch.

Glad there is only 20 min left...

p.s. is there a carpool to the meeting?

For the second flash sale in a row (the last one being the one at Fox Connect,) I regretted afterwards not picking up an additional title (or two.) My willpower is really good and I generally approach things like this in a conservative manner, but I pay the price later. So it was just 3 titles for me. If I had more time to actually watch these movies, I would perhaps buy more, but I probably have around 20 titles at home that I have never seen.. For me that is a lot.

Lucky you. I have awful bandwidth at my house. Most movies need to buffer 2-3 times while I am watching them.

Sorry to hear that. I guess I just assumed everyone had HD streaming capabilities. With how bad mine has been lately I was honestly surprised it looked as good as it did.

Thank goodness!!! It was great fun, but my wallet is quite a bit lighter.

Hope everyone got at least on title they wanted.
