Obviously, I'm stoked for either one (just read and analyzed the play a few months ago in my Shakespeare course in college) but I would definitely be quicker to buy the Welles version -- the man just fascinates me.

EDIT: I missed the Olive release. I will need to pick that up.

I believe many guessed Polanski's Macbeth from one of the New Years clues as well.

I'd be happy as Polanski's Macbeth is my favorite version.

I kept thinking "Pet Doors" was the name of some indie Lena Dunham film , but no, this sounds more like diabolically bad Criterion puns.

And the non-comedy Polanski pretty well cements it.

No word of Midnight Cowboy yet.
(Hear it's coming in out Florida, though; y'know, they got everything down there in Florida...)

are we sure that's what the reference was? I've seen MC, albeit ages ago, and don't get the connection. I haven't the faintest idea how a spotted dog being told to go outside equals MacBeth either, so maybe the best thing is to pay me no mind.

Not me... I'm awful when it comes to these. Hell, I was lucky to be able to guess Red River in the New Years drawing!

Hearts & Minds CC is finally coming to blu!

Somehow missed that announcement - definitely picking it up.

Not a fan of the new cover, though.

It's $24.99 on Amazon, I wouldn't call that expensive...

Can anyone give me some recommendations for Godard films?

Sure, see "Contempt," or in French Le Mepris. The cinematography and music are wonderful. When I saw it, I loved how much the film breathed and created its own atmosphere, be it in the very long apartment scene or stunning Capri.

Macbeth might be a red herring by Criterion...I read Paul Dano's top 10 first, and one of his picks was Kurosawa's Stray Dog. So that's not a spot on his back, it's the sun from the Japanese flag

And while we're explaining refs, MC's Dustin Hoffman as Rizzo, aka "Ratso", is obviously not in the best of health.

'Maria Full of Grace' is a brilliant movie- out on bluray in the UK (and region-free according to the review on here).

I've seen speculation that the clue is for Rivette's Out 1.

Wow, a third way to look at it! (People were saying OUT 1 as a second interpretation on Twitter). I love these clues. I'm still siding with MACBETH, as the dog looks pretty dejected about having to leave, emphasizing the "Damned Spot." STRAY DOG would be a great release also.

Edit: Also funny how both Polanski's Macbeth and Out 1 came out in 1971.
