One of the best films in the collection in my opinion (and it was a blind buy for me as well), I really don't think you can go wrong with it.

Would Criterion be able to replace my disc? I just don't want to be caught with defective discs, naturally.
Just out of curiousity, which version were you watching? I've watched the extended version and didn't have a problem, but I haven't watched the shorter version yet.

Finally got Hulu plus to play Criterion flicks without freezing up every couple minutes even at the lowest bit rate for streaming. Hooked it up through the Xbox One and now they play at HD levels with no interruption, I am pumped.

Watched Zatoichi meets Yojimbo last night, it was an entertaining entry into the Zatoichi universe for me, although the film dragged at times.

All the Zatoichi films are on Hulu right now, any recommendations on which ones are must see?

I would recommend watching at least the first 3 or 4 films in their original order. That sets up the character quite well and will explain some minor plot points later on. The first two are in black and white. Enjoy!

I cannot make it to all of these, but I'd love to see The Killers, Sweet Smell of Success, and Brute Force on the big screen. This would be a good chance for me to check out some classic film noir with an audience. I hope that I can make it to one or all of these those three.

I watched The Swimmer on Blu-ray a couple of nights ago, and it really blew me away. It's such an unnerving story in every sense of the word, and the reviews that compare it to an episode of The Twilight Zone are spot-on. I might have to make room for this one as well, if possible.

Driving to the Emory area from where I live is a pain, but these are great flicks.

To anyone in the Toronto area:

Brand new 35mm print of L'Avventura being screened at the TIFF Bell Lightbox on May 15 and May 20. Going for sure.

Atlantic City is a Malle film. I'd really like to be able to check that out on a big screen.

Since you said The Swimmer was reminiscent of Twilight Zone, how would you rank it against Seconds, Owl?

And a great film it is.

I was lucky to catch it on TV a few months ago and I really enjoyed it.

The Swimmer and Seconds are both marvelously bleak, but for different reasons. I cannot say a lot about The Swimmer without ruining the whole movie, but it's the ultimate "We do not see ourselves the same way that others see us." story. Every scene in the movie just peels another layer away, and what's left is quite haunting. The closest movie that I can offer for comparison is Joel Schumacher's Falling Down, but even that movie is quite different in its overall tone.

The Grindhouse Releasing Blu-ray of The Swimmer is beyond reproach, with a gloriously beautiful color transfer, and some great extras that I'm still going through. I would prefer, however, for The Criterion Collection to have picked this one up as a title, because it's quite a ways removed from my idea of "grindhouse" flicks. The Swimmer, like Seconds, is one of those brilliantly odd and random movies that came out of nowhere in the 1960s to knock people on their tails.

I was kinda hoping to hold out until a blu-ray comes out for this one.. we'll see. I can snag it at the library. Maybe I'll do that.

What Malle films have you seen Scottie? I think I remember you giving some love to Au Revoir les Enfants. That's definitely one of my favorites in the Collection.

I think I may be making a double feature of this and Je t'aime, je t'aime on the 15th.

Be thankful that you have places that show non-first run movies. There literally isn't anywhere within at least 2 hours of my home that shows anything different. It's probably a further distance than a 2 hour drive but let's start small.

I've only seen Atlantic City, Au Revoir Les Enfants, and Black Moon. I personally think that Au Revoir Les Enfants is one of the greatest things to have ever been made, especially as it relates to the subject of World War II.

I still have the Blu-rays of Vanya On 42nd Street and Zazie Dans Le Metro to watch, as well as My Dinner With Andre on my DVR.

I really want to see Elevator To The Gallows. I may sign-up again for Hulu for a free week and check out a couple of films that I've been meaning to see, Elevator To The Gallows being one of them.

I'm with you, man. It's mostly only new, mainstream films around here.

I really wish I lived closer to NYC so that I could spend days on end watching old films in the theater.

Living so close to the city has its ups and downs. Living near independent theaters is definitely one of the ups.

In all fairness to the mainstream theaters, though, I'm totally going to a morning matinee of Captain America: The Winter Soldier sometime during the next couple weekends. I'm planning to revisit my Blu-ray of The Avengers beforehand. I could take or leave most of the Marvel comics movies, but I'm partial to the first Iron Man movie and to The Avengers. The trailers for this new Captain America movie have quickened my pulse, and it looks to stand up quite well to those two.

Yes, I gave that up when I moved from the DC area over twenty years ago. I still have great memories of seeing Chuck Jones and Gene Roddenberry hosting showings with Q&A sessions.

Yeah I got an email from Jon Mulvaney. He said I can send in the blu ray disc in exchange for another one after I update the firmware and if there continues to be issues. I did put the disc in two different players, a ps4 and my sony blu ray player and both had issues. Funny thing is that there was freezing and skipping in certain areas during the 2nd half of the movie and when I put it in the other player, there were different areas that had skipping and freezing which were fine before and the areas that were faulty in the ps4 were fine in the other player. It sounds like they are going to take care of the issue but it helps that I had the email confirmation from my feb. order. I'm just worried about the criterions i bought from barnes and nobles that i haven't watched yet. I'm hoping those discs are fine.

That's nice of them sending a gift card. I don't really care if I get one, I just want a nice clean disc with no freezing and no skipping.
