I have some thoughts on The Killing, Devil's Backbone and Army of Shadows, but I may wait until the sale fever dies down, it's always so busy in here when the sale is happening.

Wolf Creek was too sadistic for my tastes (although I did not walk out on the film like Roger Ebert did), but Jarratt is quite amazing in his role. I wonder if he was deliberately chosen because of the Picnic at Hanging Rock angle.
He was in Django Unchained too.

Here in Australia though he spent about 15 years or so hosting a home improvement show (Better Homes and Gardens).

It is, and it's pretty much a zoo when the 15th rolls around.

Good times, good times.

These films are both rock solid Criterion titles.

Identification of a Woman may not be quite in the same league as some earlier Antonioni movies, but it has some strikingly beautiful and fascinating camera shots. There's also a mysterious fog sequence that looks marvelous in high definition. Most importantly, though, the synth-pop soundtrack, featuring the likes of John Foxx, Tangerine Dream, Japan, and OMD, is really something else. I wrote in my User Review that Identification of a Woman has a "softcore Euro-sleaze" feel to it in the vein of those late-night Cinemax foreign flicks during the 1980s, but this works in the film's favor.

Eyes Without a Face is a horror film in terms of horror being an emotion and not a genre. If we're talking pure emotion, then Eyes Without a Face is one of the true horror films. There are no supernatural elements, if that's what you're wondering, but there are some ethereal ghostly sequences, and a couple of jarring visceral curveballs. Somehow, it does not seem right to refer to Eyes Without a Face as a "thriller." It is a horror film, through and through.

Great purchases!

To Be or Not to Be does not receive a lot of discussion in this thread, and that's sad, because it achieves a wonderful balance between comedy and wartime adventure. Even during the moments of extreme hilarity, of which there are more than one would imagine for a film of this age, the somberness of the circumstances is never lost on the viewer. These World War II-era filmmakers were so incredible in terms of shedding light on horrific circumstances, but never forgetting that they are trying, first and foremost, to keep us entertained.

Pale Flower is just...is just....pure coolness.

Thanks, I checked it and it shows in downtown Toronto but doesn't say if it's the new 4k restoration being shown. Plus the theater isn't really the best of these kind of special screenings.

I'm looking forward to reading your thoughts on all of these, Snicket. Especially Army of Shadows and The Killing. Post away!

I know I'll probably like to be or not to be but I think I'm going to rent it first. It just seems like that kind of movie I like from the five reasons clip.

Here's how the conversation went:

B&N boy:
"There is no sale."

Me:
"Really? You might want to check with that."

B&N boy:
"I don't know where you're getting your information, but we just had a sale a month ago, so they won't be having another one for a while."

Me:
"You might want to check your website. It says it's kicking off tomorrow."

B&N boy:
"Let me call my manager." A couple of minutes on his walkie talkie, he comes back.
"My manager says that if there is a sale, it will only be for select titles."

Me:
"Check your website." He gets on the computer and brings up the site with the ad banner showing the Criterion 50% sale starting July 1st.

B&N boy:
"I don't know what this is about, but it's probably online only, we usually don't honor our online prices."

Me:
"Fine I'll order online. Good luck with your job." He looks puzzled.

I'm so done with this store. They seem to hire clueless young people that just make shit up as they go along or strange cat ladies that smother you with too much conversation, yet still can't find the book you want and then tell you that they can order it online for you.
Just horrible!
I usually get pretty good service at Barnes and Noble when I am in America

Well the screenings in the UK are the 4K restoration, that is the whole reason why it is being shown.

The restoration was done in 4K, but most of the screenings here in the UK won't be 4K presentations. My local cinema had a poster up for it tonight, and they don't have a 4K screen. There are only a handful of them even in London.

Yeah, I'm just being overly suspicious for no good reason . Is there a screening in Montreal?

got the Lubitsch in Berlin set from MoC , watched To be or not to be @ Hulu and have the criterion bluray of Design for Living

To be or not to be has that great actor that billy wilder used in his stalag 17 movie.

Design for Living was just awesome all the way.. every line of the dialogue was so great. that movie was "pre-code".. they startet to censor movies the year after it was released (i think).
after watching the movie you will know why i heard "trouble in paradise" is a very similar bad better movie

im gonna get the lubitsch musicals this sale

Was gonna pick up L'eclisse but I've never seen La Notte. Is it necessary to watch these in order? I've already seen L'avventura
