I got no real predicitons for tomorrows announcements, but in terms of 5 criterion titles I would like to see updated to blu ray, mine would be:

Not in order :

- The Cranes are Flying
- Ivan the Terrible (part I-II), one of my favorites, strange not to see more mention of this.
- The Virgin Spring
- Man bites dog
- Andrei Rublev

Release hopes, and I'd be fine if these were October:
  • Set of Frank Borzage: 7th Heaven, Street Angel, Lucky Star, The River (and even Bad Girl and Mannequin); gotta be loaded with special features, tho
  • Le Samourai
  • Joan of Arc
  • Pandora's Box
  • Apu Trilogy or Friends of Eddie Coyle or La Doce Vita or My Own Private Idaho

Can you guys recommend Criterions about individuals and their gradual downfall. I love movies that show individuals and focus on their life in a period of time, where we the viewer get to watch them slowly fall apart. My two favorite movies that display this are Taxi Driver and Vivre sa Vie. Not sure if this is confusing how I put it so I tried to describe a bit more in spoiler using context. From what I read it seems like Lars von Trier films may fit this category but I have never seen any. Thanks all
[Show spoiler] In Taxi Driver we see Travis slowly succumb to both external and internal pressures and he slowly falls into despair. And then in Vivre sa Vie we see a woman who is completely apathetic and thinks she is so much more than she is and we see her realization of the world that surrounds her and how she deals with it leading to her downfall

Ace in the Hole, Macbeth, Pickpocket, and Richard III are some that come to mind.

The Music Room

And as soon as Leaving Las Vegas gets a spine, I'd recommend that too.

For $13.49 I'll take a chance. Never heard of him before but it seems to be a nice long disc full of shorts so there should be at least something I'll like in there.

Youtube has a bunch of Frampton shorts available if you want to sort of try before you buy. I really like the set, and it's a great value considering how much is included, but know that Frampton is a polarizing filmmaker.

I'd love to see Short Cuts get an upgrade, and Downhill Racer.
I'm very happy that Eraserhead got announced last month, but how cool would Mulholland Dr. be? You can always dream.

Most wanted upgrades..Spartacus, Le Samourai, The Friends of Eddie Coyle.

Watched Rififi tonight. Totally badass from beginning to end. Loved the heist along with the time and know how involved. A great heist movie is always time well spent. Didn't think
[Show spoiler]the kid was going to make it home alive. Seemed like that is where things were headed went things went to crap at the end.

I thought so too, and it's the only Criterion that I've ever sold. It was quite a chore sitting through all the shorts.

The only one I'm sold on right now is Kiss Me Deadly
The Killing would be my number one recommendation, but I'll also add The Sweet Smell of Success and Ace in the Hole.

Friends of Eddie Coyle is one of my favorite '70's crime dramas. Truly enjoyed this film, and I like the Fall/Winter Boston setting as well. Note that the 2010 film The Town paid homage to FOEC in the initial heist scene...

Also recently saw Purple Noon (1960) on the Criterion label - this is based on the excellent Patricia Highsmith novel The Talented Mr. Ripley. If I had never read the book I may have liked the film since I like European movies; great Italian scenery & interesting storyline. It started out being very light hearted, and then got very dark about midway through
[Show spoiler]after Ripley killed Dickie (or Philippe in the film) Greenleaf on the boat.
However, they changed so many things from the book that IMHO the film was a mess; adding characters, changing storylines, etc. The most unforgivable & egregious change
[Show spoiler]was that at the very end of the movie, the authorities found Dickie's body, which had been trailing behind the boat ("Marge"), & then apprehended Ripley at the end. Conversely, at the end of the novel Ripley got away with this, and there were 4-5 more novels starring the character.

I had been avoiding watching the film because I wasn't thrilled with the 1999 The Talented Mr. Ripley film (directed by A. Minghella), since it also changed so many key points from the book. However, Purple Noon was
[Show spoiler]an even worse offender when it came to seriously deviating from the source material....

It's available on Netflix and it is also one of the most unsettling films ever.
