I think that Akira Kurosawa's High and Low is a rocking great movie. Kurosawa squeezes a lot of intensity out of a police procedural story, and it's fun to see how the corporate climate of 1960s Japan, as depicted in the movie, compares to corporate climates on these shores.

I really hope that Stray Dog receives a Blu-ray upgrade in the near future.

I don't think this story called for this kind of framing. Detailed explanation in the post I just quoted.

Will your comedy act be playing here all week?

Last June they basically matched B&N prices in their eBay store, but they ship worldwide and are great for getting past customs.

Me too.
Violence is typically the antagonist, or "the villain," of Godard's films. It was exaggerated a bit in Weekend, but that was an artistic choice. Not too sure I can think of a time where it was "glorified."

I think that Criterion is waiting until after they release Billy Wilder's The Lost Weekend to have the flask sale.

With regard to a proper flash sale, I hope that it's after the corrected release of Eraserhead. For all of the other discs, it's now close enough to the Barnes & Noble sale that I'll be better off waiting.

The Lost Weekend will be packaged with a bottle of rye.

Words would not even express how ecstatic I would be if Criterion was to release Wilder's The Lost Weekend - flask or no flask.

don't throw any tomatoes, Scottie. but that one didn't work for me either.

BUT.. I saw it years ago and I think I was expecting something like Sunset Boulevard or Double Indemnity. Definitely needs another look.

I like a lot of Kurosawa, but only really love Seven Samurai, Rashomon, and Ikiru. I much prefer Ozu and Mizoguchi.

Days of Wine and Roses is probably a more realistic portrayal of alcoholism. Both excellent films. Jack Lemmon is extraordinary in that film.

Sunset Boulevard is easily my favorite of his works, but I really love The Lost Weekend, The Seven Year Itch, and Witness for the Prosecution, as well.

I know it by name, but not too familiar with it. Jack Lemmon in a role like that sounds like it'd be good stuff. Thanks for mentioning it.

ranked, I'd go:

Double Indemnity

Sunset Boulevard
Some Like It Hot
The Seven Year Itch
The Lost Weekend

will probably change after I revisit them.. just about all are due for a rewatch

Billy Wilder's "One, Two, Three" (1961) Starring James Cagney - one of Wilder's and Cagney's best films

(some rumors it may come out through CC)
