I'd be ALL OVER either Dancer in the Dark or Dogville. But I've sort of given up hope on Dogville.
The Mirrors is an incredible, poetic piece - so many incredible moments, I'm surprised this film doesn't get more attention! ah I forgot they need to add Stalker too!

I think TNW is 50/50 with people, I personally love it, but only the extended version, I think the cut version didn't work as well - I get why people don't like it though - which is fair. I think Malick's weakest work is To The Wonder, I don't know if its cause I didn't like the casting or what, it saw very beautiful but something was missing - I get it's not mean to be a typical film and its more of a poem or a ballet but something was lacking which really upset me, I still like it and will watch but its not his best!

Dogville is a MUST we need to harass Criterion to get it because its just incredible, Manderlay I found OK but no where near as good as Dogville... still waiting for the final piece

I really with Criterion would put some focus and attention on Asian horrors though - some real gems out there I know they have a few but some aren't even bluray

Hoep we get some Haneke next year too!

Last night, I watched the first six short films in the Lost Keaton lineup in The Buster Keaton Collection box set.

I won't go so far as to say that these Lost Keaton short films are a chore to watch, but they're definitely not in the same league as the earlier material on the box set. These short films were created with lower budgets, so, instead of seeing comedic gags and effects every minute or so, these stories seem to take us through about 18 minutes of story before one big payoff gag. The biggest thing that I've found lacking, though, is the absence of effective music in most of these shorts, since these films were sound productions with dialogue. I'm reminded of how crucial the music was to Keaton's earlier silent films, as it was in the silent films of Lloyd and Chaplin.

Rosemary's Baby is absolutely essential Halloween viewing and Diabolique and The Innocents aren't far behind.

I'm also kind of tempted to toss Blow Out in the mix. It's not quite to that 'omg, you have to see this' level of essential but it's pretty damn close. It's also really more of a straight thriller than horror/thriller/giallo. But it's very good and I worked it into my Halloween viewing last year and it seemed right at home.

I concur with this. Blow Out is a solid thriller with some spooky moments.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if Criterion had released Arsenic and Old Lace too for Halloween?

What did you think to the film? Its so dark and beautiful (and horrible!).

Such a powerful film though - you should watch the making of for that scene, the guys who did prosthetics were quite amusing lol

I liked it. Not as much as Breaking The Waves, but i liked it. I probably preferred the first hour over the
[Show spoiler]oh my gosh im so glad I didn't just eat tumble into madness
last 40 mins, but it's all good.

I still have Dancer in The Dark and Nymphomaniac in my blu collection to watch.

Glad you liked its definitely not everyone cup of tea - but there are some stunning shot sin this film and the acting is faultless!

You may like Dancer more as it has far more similarities to Breaking The Waves, only its a musical (but don't let that put you off!) I usually hate musicals but I think if the film didn't have the songs it would be extremely depressing and horrible lol Bjork is such a talented actress and such a shame she won't again, especially with Lars!

Nymphomaniac is great, probs best way for full cut but it does have its flaws sadly, I prefer Antichrist

whoa... it seems that everyone is forgetting about Blithe Spirit!

anyone?

anyone?

actually, I just told my wife this morning at the Dunkin Donuts that I have this movie that seems Halloweenie and we should give it a try.

Rosemary's Baby is a darn near perfect movie, btw... I never really had any urge to see it, but when I gave it a chance last year on Netflix, I certainly did not regret it. the film has a wonderful sense of humor.

My favourite part is
[Show spoiler]the end, they don't show you the baby or his eyes and it leaves you wondering and scared - what is wrong with his eyes, what has she seen - what have they done!? I find the best horrors are the ones that play with your mind, rather then show everything and gore - Like The Shining there is hardly ANY violence or gore, only minor parts

Either of those would be great! There are also recent restorations of 49th Parallel and Tales of Hoffman going about.

Ah,yes..
Also, I would say : Beauty and the Beast (1946).
I hope the restored film makes it to an English-friendly Bluray.

I have seen this film yeaaaaaaaaaars ago, probably in my teens, but why I do remember
[Show spoiler]showing the baby's eyes, and that they were yellow?
Probably I'm confusing it with something else.

Re: Rosemary's Baby
[Show spoiler]the entire last sequence where she is removing things from the closet so she can get a look at what is going on in the next apartment... and then she enters the room and Polanski gives us the shot of her POV. talk about mounting suspense and perfect execution!

Yes, yes, and more yes! Although Nostalgia was already released by Kino (granted they didn't clean up the print at all). Would rather get Stalker out on blu-ray, but Andrei Rublev is probably my number one film I want CC to release on blu-ray.
