Question

Does anyone know if Jon Mulvaney still works at Criterion, and if he still answers emails?

Could be an interview for the channel. Maybe they are going to stream her earlier films (I'm not sure who, if anyone, they are with in the US.)

Last time I checked, he had a scare with Covid, but has recovered completely.

I hope everyone does homework on releases. Criterion does not always offer the best version of a movie. For Wages of Fear, the BFI disc is so much better than the Criterion, they should just stop pressing their own. If they can, try to release the 4K scan in an upgrade of their 2009 disc. Also goes for Beauty and the Beast. There are also Criterion blurays that look terrible. Kagemusha, The Last Emperor, The Ice Storm, Something Wild, Amarcord (Amarcord has since had a new transfer in the box set).

I imagine someone else will chime in definitively, but my understanding from past comments is that you can stack multiple gift certificates in one order.

Sometimes I feel like I need to step away from these boards for a month. Kagemusha looks great.

Does anyone know if the gift shop items are 50% off during the flash sales?

...or is it just films?

BFI's Beauty and the Beast disc came out seven years after Criterion's, which is why it's better. Eight years passed for The Wages of Fear. Both were the best discs available at the time, but it's obvious that newer 4K restorations would best masters done in the 2000s.

Pretty much all the discs I find a bit mediocre are simply due to being older releases from older masters, usually titles that weren't getting remastered anyways either due to lack of demand or other things. I can't say I'm surprised The Last Temptation of Christ didn't get a fresh remaster for its Blu-ray, but we're lucky to have it in the first place.

Does anyone know, if I place an order during the sale for the Godzilla set and a few other individual movies, will the Godzilla set ship separately due to its unique size, or will they ship it all together? Curious how the packaging would work in that situation.

I'm using a reshipper to ship outside the US, if they ship each title individually or something the cost'd be too high to justify ordering.

In my experience, they ship all items from an order together. Can't guarantee it of course, but since the flash sales don't include out-of-stock items or preorders, I would think you're safe.

I ordered the Godzilla Box, along with six individual titles, during the Flash Sale last February. Everything was shipped in one box that that was large enough to fit the dimensions (length x width) of the Godzilla set. The box was also about 3 inches tall. The individual titles were laid on top, along with some paper wadding to stabilize all of the items together. All arrived fine, with no damage.

There is currently no better option For Kagemusha, is there? I refuse to buy The Last Emperor because it is in the wrong aspect ratio. Not Criterion’s fault from what I understand, but still.....

So you're going to deny yourself a great film because the aspect ratio is of by .29 from the original. Wow, you're sure showing them with your righteousness. Congratulations. What will they do now? How will they survive?!?!?!?!

Oh NO!!!

As if chopping a significant amount of image at the sides didn't make a huge difference.

He's certainly not the only one to refuse the butchered Blu-ray. I won't be buying it unless it's released in the original theatrical aspect ratio.
