I kind of just discovered Éric Rohmer when I found a sealed DVD of 2001's The Lady and the Duke in a pile of DVDs I'm combing through here. Does anyone recommend 1 or 2 films of his that I must watch before I consider buying this set? Thanks.

I would probably recommend Claire's Knee. If you like that, you should like his work. If you don't want to try one from that set, try The Green Ray or Pauline at the Beach. I haven't seen the Tales of Four Seasons films yet, but I suspect Criterion will be putting them out. |

Anyway, anyone who was around in the Valley in those days would get the reference. Obviously, I don't know yet if the title has any other significance to the film's content other than a reference to the period setting. EDIT: This explains the origin of the record store name a little bit. https://www.lamag.com/culturefiles/l...omas-anderson/ Last edited by dkelly26666; 09-29-2021 at 05:41 PM. |

I just got in the Melvin Van Peebles box and "The Damned" yesterday, and today watched Van Peebles' three early short films and his debut feature, "The Story of a Three Day Pass", all for the first time, and they were all good. "Three Day Pass" was EXCELLENT. Obviously, ground breaking in some ways, but also just a really inventive and stylish piece of cinema, too. Has a stinging wit just below its romantic surface, too. Almost like the whole thing is quite tongue-in-cheek. Very enjoyable.

Just received my copy of "The Damned". Sweet Mother of God did they do a good job on the cover art. It was one thing to see it online, it's a whole other thing to see it in my hands. Excellent work.
Excellent film, as well. Haven't seen it in at least 10 years. Quite a journey it goes on. I've been re-reading James Shirer's "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich", and, chronologically, the Night of the Long Knives just happened; several times I was brought back to this film. Looking forward to re-watching it. Kind of odd, I pre-ordered it on Amazon last Thursday or Friday, and it said I wouldn't be getting it until around October 6th. But then yesterday, while doing the rounds, I saw Amazon was listing it as "Get it tomorrow". So I canceled my pre-order, which hadn't shipped, and ordered it again. It's now sitting right here next to me. |

Working my way right on through this Van Peebles set. Yesterday, it was the early shorts and "The Story of a Three Day Pass". Today, it was "Watermelon Man". Again, wonderfully subversive in that it is outrageously comical the first two thirds, and then becomes a very serious and moving film in the last third. I definitely think Melvin Van Peebles made it much better with his altered ending than what was originally in the script. (He discusses this in the film intro).
Next it'll be onto "Sweetback", which I saw way back in the 70s, again in the 90s, and again about a decade ago. Still eager to revisit that shock to the system. |

As I continue my intense analysis of hundreds of DVDs I'm sorting through here, I stumbled upon the 3rd and excellent film by Director Hirokazu Koreeda called Nobody Knows. Though there have been some foreign blu-ray releases including a region-free Japanese blu-ray, I think Criterion could look into releasing this in their collection.
![]() Koreeda is one of my favorite Asian directors and there really isn't a single bad film in his filmography (with the possible exception of 2009's Air Doll (about a blow-up doll given a soul and falling in love with a video store clerk), which I haven't seen). |

It’s not really that bad, just more an odd choice of subject for someone with his sensibilities. But then he also made The Third Murder, which while excellent, really does stick out like a sore thumb in his filmography (only in the sense that it doesn’t quite seem to be cut from the same cloth as his work).

If you’re region free, I believe Powerhouse Films have their fifth anniversary in October, and their fall sale is around this time.
