For the record, a year or two ago, probably in this forum, I said that I didn't think Criterion would ever release a 4K UHD. So I'm not one of those whiners.

I don't see any problem with me asking whether a particular 4K UHD is worth the upgrade. My 2 cents.

It was not my intent to single you out as a whiner, but we can all agree the topic of 'if and when' Criterion releasing titles on UHD was endemic to this thread, board and physical media community for years.

Of course not, not that I believe that in the overwhelming majority of instances can someone else answer the question for anyone other than themselves.

My point is pre-Criterion UHD, very few posters were stating that the improvements would be marginal at best given the Criterion catalog/mission.

Now we find out what everyone is made of.

Dailyan pointed this out in the Miller’s Crossing thread. Confirmed on my copy that the line is missing. Now we have to wonder if it was an error or intentionally removed from this edition.

[Show spoiler]
Quote:
As to the one difference I alluded to earler, there is a short moment missing: in previous releases, after Tom (Gabriel Byrne) hits Frankie (Mike Starr) with a chair in one scene, Frankie looks at Tom with a confused look and then says “Jesus, Tom” before sulking off. The moment with that line has been cut out, but everything around it is still there. Whether or not its intentional on the Coens’ part I can’t say, but it does feel deliberate because it's a clean cut.

I emailed Criterion and already heard back. I guess you can expect other edits as well.

I can confirm that the Coens made some minimal edits to the master for this Director-approved release of MILLER'S CROSSING.

What's he gonna do, sue Criterion for adding special features? Then they can wait till he drops dead and release them

Tell me without telling me that you don’t know how licensing works.

Is isn't that Allen is against extras but that MGM is apparently adamant about sticking to their initial contract with him in which they were restricted. His people signed off on some new extras for a Twilight Time title but MGM refused to allow them.

"Minimal" changes or not, Criterion should have made it clear that this is a newly edited version. (Not that this will prevent me from getting the release, mind you!)

This is the biggest head scratcher to me. I’m well aware of filmmakers’ wants to revise their films, but it’s pretty out of character for Criterion to promote this as they have with no mention of any edits. Let’s face it, the tiny subset of people who will be rebuying this pricier version of the movie would likely want to know this.

Has anyone else noticed this happening more recently? I saw another poster elsewhere talking about the same thing but in the last two weeks, from two different retailers, I've had brand new Criterion blu-ray's arrive littered with scratches. Last week my 'Written on the Wind' had jagged scratches on it fresh out of box, still on the hub and everything, and today my Amazon copy of 'The Virgin Suicides' is covered in tiny scratches all over it. Both were in cellophane with stickers and not resealed, but Criterion what is that about? Two in one week, I've had to contact customer service and exchange both now and it's frustrating.

I haven’t experienced it much, but yes, others have been reporting this here in the forum.

Maybe a manufacturing or packaging problem? Maybe the blade for the stores’ box cutter is extended too far? Just a few guesses.

See, that's the thing the packaging was pristine on both, no wear on booklets, art, etc. But then the discs look very used, as if someone else has been roughly handling them before me.

I'd guess it's just shoddy practices at the Mexico manufacturing plant. We've been hearing a lot more a out these types of issues the last year or two (maybe longer) and not just Criterion releases.

I've heard this too. A lot of the labels we buy from have been manufactured in the same plant.

I am getting annoyed too, I just received "The Piano" from Target and my 4k disk was perfect, but my bluray disc had a slight circular scratch and a bunch of weird small blotches. I played the bluray and it plays fine, but contemplating whether I want to return it, but it seems to be the norm as of lately...Half of the movies I've picked up this year from Criterion have had imperfections no matter where I get them (B&N, Target, Amazon, BestBuy, etc.)
