regarding this

criterion replied and said they could give me $30 credit on their store now without any replacement - or wait for the set to come back in stock, as it's backordered now. that would also require me to send it back of course.

thinking i'll just live with the set as is and use the credit towards something on the next sale

edit: actually i read their response again and i was wrong. they don't have any replacement cases in-stock and my options are to either take the $30 credit or return it for a full refund.

Having just received my order for The Red Shoes 4k, I'm sure it was obvious to everyone but me that Criterion reuses spine numbers on format upgrades, so my 4k edition shares the same spine number as the dvd and blu-ray.

My flash sale order arrived today:High Sierra, Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou and Pierre Etaix Collection. In one of those cardboard wraparound packages, but undamaged. Guess I have to check for scratches and fingerprints now.

To be frank I don't believe you. That's too obtuse.

Grogu and Criterion.jpg

My new purchases arrived. Tonight, in the Man Cave, The Passion of Joan of Arc.

I'll be honest. I have no idea why I love this movie. The story is well known, there are no surprises, no special effects, nothing romantic, no comedy, no mystery, and nothing else that would draw me to this film. But somehow, it works, and I'm drawn to it. This will be my sixth viewing, but the first time on Blu-Ray. All my other viewings were either DVD or the Criterion Channel.

Well, here I go, again. Just can't help it.

Wishing for June:

Hoping that the rumored "Pink Flamingos" actually materializes.
"After Hours", dammit!
Something from Pasolini (it's his Centennial! Come on!)
Always hoping for "Dersu Uzala" (Kurosawa)

Default Criterion title Marketa Lazarova

Unless it eventually gets a UK release, one of the Criterion US titles I hope to get is Marketa Lazarova. Didn't know about it until recently, when I read Mondo Digital's review of Second Run's Blu-ray release of The Devil's Trap.

Last I read, Scott MacQueen was working on a 4K restoration of this film. Here's hoping it makes it to blu/4K disc soon.

Yeah, mine came in busted too (corners), but I want the set regardless if it's busted physically. While the slipcover is def eyesore, check your digipacks, mine were messed up and hoping Criterion can replace them.

thankfully the digipacks and the discs inside were in good shape for me. i was so concerned with the box that i hadn't even checked the discs, so thanks for pointing that out. hope they send out a replacement for you

While I doubt we'll get two Japanese titles in months back to back, I do hope we get either Cure or Drive My Car revealed tomorrow.

It's a great disc - enjoy! A few years back, I had the chance to see it screened theatrically, accompanied by a live choir & orchestra performing the Voices of Light score. One of my all-time great movie experiences, since Passion is one of my favorite films.

I feel like it's too late for a Kurosawa Blu-ray Set, unless it's all DVD Upgrades or First Time releases. They've already released a bunch of Kurosawa releases on Blu, and reissuing them when none are OOP would be a slap in the face for customers. But we'll see, I'm always up for more Kurosawa, but I do think it's too damn late for a box.

They released 10 of his films on blu. While on DVD they released 25 of his films, either in the mega set some years back or in individual releases and eclipse sets.
I think it would be worth for a set, as long as they updated the video quality of the rest of his work.

It would be nice to have almost all of his films in one place.

I'm not so sure I'd buy a Kurosawa set, as I already own all the Blu-Ray versions of the singles that I want that have been released. Now, if the set were to be 4K UHD, that would provide a legitimate reason to upgrade.

I definitely agree, but I'm just hoping it's not going to "rehash" films that are already available on Blu. I don't know how they'd sell the set, like a theme, etc. Now if it were like the Bergman Set, and it was essentially every film he's done, I'd definitely be all for that.

But I'd want at least the major films to be 4K UHD.
