Werckmeister Harmonies and Soy Cuba are both in my top 20 films of all time. They are absolute masterpieces. So I'm thrilled at this. Even if it will cost me an arm and a leg importing them.

A lovingly restored 4K of Gallipoli I wouldn't turn my back on.

I hope Warners will do LIVING DANGEROUSLY and MOSQUITO, though it will probably be the Archive and not on 4K, which is too bad as Weir's visual style would definitely fit UHD really well.

I was surprised to see Werckmeister in 4K as well. It will be a blind buy for me, as a relatively new admirer of Bela Tarr. I have Damnation, Satantango, and The Turin Horse. I have also been meaning to watch Dogfight and La Haine for quite awhile. I might pick up Picnic at Hanging Rock, even though it's on the channel, because I have always been intrigued by it.

Re: the lack of Japanese cinema being released, I am really hoping for a 70th anniversary 4K of Seven Samurai this year. I know it wouldn't be a new acquisition for Janus/Criterion, but it would be something for us Kurosawa fans. I periodically daydream about Criterion releasing a massive Kurosawa Blu-ray set. (*sigh*)

I’d accumulated a bunch of $10 gift codes due to my Criterion Channel subscription, so I used them to preorder both Werckmeister Harmonies and Soy Cuba on 4K and had them shipped to family in the US

Asian films are actually quite well served at the moment. The problem is that Japanese films are no longer getting the same attention they did around ten years ago. I’m sure there are good reasons for this, but it is a thing.

Dogfight is big, the other ones I’ve never heard of save for Picnic At Hanging Rock. Hard to say it without spoiling it but that ending sucked. Basically
[Show spoiler]it’s one of those films where it ends without an ending, if you know what I mean. So I really felt robbed when I watched it. Some people can take those kinds of endings, but I’m not one of them.

I’ve been on a bit of a Japanese kick lately watching Red Angel, Golgo 13: The Professional and The Return of Godzilla. Not one was a Criterion. Not one.

I'm with you re: the Japanese kick. I recently blind bought Blind Beast (pun intended), Red Angel, Irezumi, The Mad Fox, and Big Time Gambling Boss. All but the last are from Arrow; BTGB is Radiance. It was also courtesy of Arrow that I discovered the magnificence of A Fugitive from the Past last year; now it's a new favorite. It has been nice exploring some of the more obscure corners of Japanese cinema, beyond the recognized masters Ozu, Kurosawa, Mizoguchi, etc.

Someone contact The New York Times and tell them you think that Japanese people are underrepresented by Criterion lately and it should really be pointed out and the label publicly shamed for it.

Ozu made 54 films in his time. Of these, 17 are apparently lost (not sure how reliable Wiki is).

I fully expect a box set to be announced with the films featured as part of the "Ozu 120" at Film Forum in the near future. I highlighted those in red. (So basically, everything but the lost films.)
  1. Zange no yaiba (1927) - lost

  6. Physical Beauty (1928) - lost
  7. Treasure Mountain (1929) - lost
  8. Days of Youth (1929)
  9. Fighting Friends (1929) - short - 14 surviving minutes
  10. I Graduated, But... (1929) - 10 surviving minutes
  11. The Life of an Office Worker (1929) - lost
  12. A Straightforward Boy (1929) - short
  13. Introduction to Marriage (1930) - lost
  14. Walk Cheerfully (1930)
  15. I Flunked, But... (1930)
  16. That Night's Wife (1930)

Scottie, do you think it will be all Blus if a box set does get released or might they slip in a 4K or two? I would love to see LATE AUTUMN in 4K.

I would imagine all BDs. I could see them rolling out a couple on 4K though, like Tokyo Story.
