Eventually yes, we just don’t know when. Between films shot on Gameboy cameras and films made by farmers for five blueberries and a goat, it’s hard to make the time and resources for such rabble as Ozu.

Wait a minute, is criterion for sure getting KOTFM?

Is Drive My Car the most recent Janus contemporary title to get a spine-numbered release? I feel EO would have been a "big enough" title to merit a Criterion spine, considered BFI gave it a 'bells and whistles' blu-ray.

The Contemporaries line started the following year after Drive My Car came out. It'll be interesting to see what they do with Hamaguchi's Evil Does Not Exist later this year. Another bigger title coming up is Wenders' Anselm, which should ideally be presented in 3D.

I do agree that EO could easily have been a regular Criterion release, and arguably even a 4K release given how visually-rich the film is. I feel Criterion may have shot themselves in the foot by making JC a budget-friendly, barebones line. That works for some titles, but there are others that should get a "full" Criterion treatment. Ironically, it's almost better if another company like NEON acquires the title, and then Criterion licenses it from them (like Anatomy of a Fall).

Is it because there are no swords in them? Come on, admit it, you're among friends here! (Not really).

I haven’t found a single reason to buy any of the Janus Contemporaries releases when it’s just BDs mirroring the Channel. Perfectly happy with the BFI release of EO and the Curzon release of Godland. As you mentioned, Drive My Car was much better served as a release.

As far as I'm concerned, that defines Ozu better than anything ever could.

I think it's possible we could see smaller sets of his films, similar to what BFI are doing in the UK. I think bigger titles are just more likely to get a standalone release.

With that said, I could see a Noriko Trilogy set come out, since Late Spring and Tokyo Story were already released, and a new set with the newer restorations would seem more likely for Criterion than them just doing a new individual re-releases for those titles (unless they're planning to do separate 4K upgrades for them).

That reminds me of something I've been wondering about. Does anyone know if there is any content difference between the upcoming BFI release of There Was a Father (part of the upcoming two pack along with I Was Born But) and their much older previous release (which came paired with Equinox Flower).

I ask because I recall reading that previously removed footage from the film has been restored and was curious if it might be included in the upcoming release.

The previous BFI release was a DVD.

Yes, I'm aware that the previous release was DVD and the upcoming will be blu-ray. I'm referring to the content of the film itself.

Panasonic Region Free 4K Players at 220 Electronics

I have the non-region free UB420 and will upgrade to the region free one if it is revealed that Killers of the Flower Moon won't get a 4K release here in the States.

I bought the Italian 4K Steelbook and it was already on its way here when I found out the disc was region locked. It would be an expensive upgrade, but at least I would know that the player can play anything I throw at it.

I am so thrilled that Criterion is doing Japanese Cinema blu ray releases again! I hope Tokyo Twilight, Flowing, and When a Woman Ascends the Stairs is coming soon.

Eagle Pictures is aware that the disc is region locked and have said that they are planning a non-region locked disc.

Here's some, though I've reduced the size. It's richer, and beter balanced now, not having the faded/washed-out look of the Eureka disc, nor the overly contrasty/saturated look of the Criterion DVD. Reds are still quite rich, and prominent as you can see. For me, every frame, and composition here is like a work of art.
Thanks for this. The caps look great and your description is spot on- much richer colors and the contrast is greatly improved.

I’m just happy they’re upgrading dvd titles in general. Two months in a row. Hopefully, it’ll become a regular thing again.
