The Delta (1996) has been added to Apple TV and VUDU via Criterion.

Physical release should be coming at some point.

I'd have to disagree with this and say that Blu-ray is more than adequate for a films presentation. The upgrade to 4K is often not marginal depending on TV size in comparison to say DVD to Blu-ray. Even a forum inside in another thread mentioned that HDR is considered a "gimmick" by many in the industry. There is no doubt 4K, looks better, but it's not the huge jump in clarity that some make it out to be.

I am especially worried about the future of Criterion. Not so much in the financial sense as I'm sure they will continue making money, but more so in the sense of new to HD titles per month especially now that they might start releasing a WAC title every month or every other month. We haven't gotten that many from November onwards and it's a shame.

I'm not saying they shouldn't release studio films, but that they need to chill out with it a bit. Literally Night Moves has a perfect Blu-ray release. It didn't need another release for a bit more clarity. Give the 4K or Blu-ray to something that hasn't had a release.

I know a lot of people love Criterion here, but I think it's fair to express frustrations on this thread month after month or week after week. I've said this before, but Criterion monthly reveals used to excite me once upon a time, but now I almost feel a dread in the pit of my stomach as to incoming disappointment.

For me personally, Criterion going 4K might be the worst thing to happen in this industry since Disney bought Fox.

I'd like to think Kojima had something to do with this visit (and David Hayter will pop in soon!). I can picture Sam Bridges delivering a case of wine to Criterion.

I think it’s not the 4k. 4k is amazing for Criterion. I think the issue is the types of movies they have been focusing/leaning on for a while are big name movies they know are going to sell. Almost all of their movies nowadays already have a built-in fanbase. I can’t fault them cause they are just trying to keep going. We are in an era where a lot of people do not have as much disposable income as they used to. But, it feels like the old ways of blindly finding amazing films in the collection are gone. .

It’s like the same logic with Apple always focusing on making a better camera than the one on the last phone, even though it is already an amazing camera and they are sacrificing other components for it. It’s what the majority of people want so they do it.

Companies do what they know will work and keep people buying their products.

It's not just about clarity and it's just not about HDR. It's about bit rate, it's about grain resolution, it's about density, it's about compression, it's about motion fluidity. A GREAT Blu-Ray might capture some of these things, but not often. I like 4k because a good 4k looks like FILM. If your criteria is, well, do I have a 85 inch TV so I can appreciate the resolution, I get it. But the totality of the package, the last stop of looking like a film print? That's 4K's domain. Not exclusively, but predominantly. And I think that anyone with a decent modern television can appreciate that. Shaft took my breath away - I felt like I was in a crummy theater in the 1970s with a first-night print. Had the same feeling with The Last Waltz. McCabe's 4K captured Zsigmond's idiosyncratic cinematography better to a surprising degree. The Red Shoes felt like Technicolor in a way that the BD didn't, and it wasn't just color fidelity. There was a *thickness* to it that was transformational, I thought.

And I do find it ironic that some have also spent a ton of time complaining that Criterion is just punting on extras lately, and then we got TWO new, completely unrecycled commentaries this month! Including Night Moves! Wasn't that part of the point?

By the way, I'm not gonna harsh anyone's buzz by saying they shouldn't be critiquing. You got a point of view? Do it. But I hope people aren't cheeved off when I counter that to my own annoying degree.

Universal just did a 4K restoration in collaboration with The Film Foundation, so it's going to come from someone sooner than later.

I think the bigger picture is that studios work with Criterion on 4K upgrades they could do themselves, but know the extra value in marketing it as Criterion. Night Moves has a great Blu-ray, but Warner Archive is only just dipping their toes into 4K. Is it 100% necessary? Of course not, but it's definitely welcomed and it's been six years since the Blu.

The only questionable picks I've seen from Criterion have oddly been the Disney licenses lately. Wall-E and The Shape of Water seem more for the prestige value than anything, but hey, if it gets people to look at other titles. It's just disappointing Disney will OK those, but not titles without even an in-print Blu-ray.

Overall, the breadth of 4K releases from Criterion has been exciting. Titles like Paper Moon, After Hours, The Long Good Friday, The Mother and the *****, Peeping Tom, I Am Cuba, Happiness, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, The Roaring Twenties, Winchester '73, The Trial, and I Walked with a Zombie all get to debut in 4K. Bound, Days of Heaven, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Lost Highway, Mean Streets, Performance, Le samourai, Three Colors, and The Wages of Fear are huge upgrades over previous releases.

If anything, I feel like a lot of titles end up being "Blu-ray with bonus 4K" like Scarface and Double Indemnity, which is fine. If it gets collectors who usually wouldn't bother with classics to check them out because it's 4K, good for all.

As far as I know all the Criterion 4K come also with regular Blu-ray, so you could've started getting those already.

Watched Flow today. Really beautiful film. Visuals were incredible. The animation style is pretty different from anything I've seen before. The mysterious settings were among my favorite aspects of the film. They just feel so haunting, and otherworldly. There's so many places in this that I could just get lost in. The film has an immersive feel, almost like a video game, especially with the way the "camera" moves around a scene.

It really didn't take me long to fall in love with the assortment of animals in the film, especially the capybara who I think is my new spirit animal. I highly recommend checking it out if it's playing near you. I saw it at an AMC theater, which is a rare occurrence for a Janus film.

Amazon has the new Paper Moon 4k at 53% off right now. I've almost never seen that for a Criterion title and definitely never for a new release. It's shipped and sold by Amazon btw, not a 3rd party. Is this portense of things to come maybe?

It's a pricematch of WM's price:

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Paper-Moo...R&from=/search

WM occasionally drops Criterion titles at or just below 50% now and then. No rhyme or reason to it.

Anyone know if Criterion still has the rights to Taboo (Gohatto)? I'm trying to see if it's possible for another label to release it in the US and don't see anything that Criterion still has it.

It left the channel a couple years back and hasn't returned, so I think it is likely that they don't have it any more.

Not to kill your vibe, but i was rather disappointed w this flick. My hopes were high. I would bring up what i disliked about it, but i quickly forgot what i didnt like about it as soon as the movie was over. As far as “silent” animated films that have come out within the past year, i much preferred ROBOT DREAMS

Pretty cool it played at an AMC by you though, in the way that the movie was able to get out there some! I do remember seeing trailers for it before some features at AMC, but i dont think it ended up playing at any of the AMC theaters by me.Funny thing is the local AMCs were advertising Robot Dreams as well and didnt play that either! I had to drive an hour away to see that one.

Sorry y'all, i hate to do this, but ALL WE IMAGINE AS LIGHT is one of the dumbest, most overrated movies of the year. Like a bit of a cool vibe here and there, some quality cinematography, and top notch color work. But this thing is just taking all the well liked art house beats. The director even went to the Cannes school similar to Sundance Institute and was guided how to make the film. Art house films should be taking chances w originality. Not just churning out some assembly line popcorn product.

Got a Criterion gift card as an early Christmas gift!

No Country 4K
Biollante blu-ray

Saving the rest, because Criterion is killing it and we're probably going to need all the cushion we can get for the 2025 4K blast

I forgot to post in the thread a couple of days back about this, but I enjoyed the Criterion 4K UHD presentation of Godzilla (1954).

It is not a day-versus-night improvement over the standard Blu-ray, but it looks good.

I am so glad that Criterion has bestowed this movie the prestige that it has always deserved.
