The numbering system applies to both DVD and Blu-ray releases.

Don't know if it was too good for this forum or not but it was excellent and accurate to my own knowledge of film projection from the '60s up to present. And I agree that today's "projectionists" are not trained as they used to be in projector maintenance and as a result, films suffer.

Love it! Very Alfred Hitchcockian in a black comedy type of way!

I was wondering the same thing. I thought it maybe was the numbered sequence in which Criterion acquired the said film(s)?

I always thoought it was the order in wich they released them on that particular format. The laserdics have different numbers than their dvd and bd counterparts. I do not know about the vhs releases.

I think it goes by production order. Number is basically assigned when they start production. That would explain why Grand Illusion was number 1 but released much later, as it had a longer production cycle.

Don't hold me to that though.

I can't wait for Army of Shadows.

Anyway, for Christmas, I got me some Criterions.

Yojimbo/Sanjuro, Walkabout, Cronos, Pierrot Le Fou

I also got Metropolis and Battleship Potemkin

Awesome.

I haven't seen "Cronos" or "Sanjuro" yet. I enjoyed the others you listed. You got several excellent movies. Congratulations.

It is a shame that "Make Way for Tomorrow" Blu-ray by Eureka is region locked. :-( Thank God Criterion put out the DVD. That is another one I have on my ever growing list to get.

I got that one myself. I watched it last night and woah!
I was shocked with how amazing this BD is. I was kind of worried about sitting down to a 2.5 hr silent film that has been re-released a multitude of times, and has been known to be difficult to follow, story wise. About 35-40 mins into it, all of my fears had drained away.

This Kino release of Metropolis has skyrocketed to become one of my favotite BDs, literally overnight. It was really fun to watch this film and add up the modern movie influences as you see them happeing (Matrix, Blade Runner, Star Wars, etc.) I honestly found Metropolis to be quite riveting, and it kept my full attention all the way through...something that can't (really) be said for a lot of modern movies...

I enjoyed the complete Metropolis so much that I now want to visit more quality silent film releases. I feel as if I just opened up an entire new world of films to discover and enjoy. I HIGHLY recommend this to Criterion film fans, and movie lovers who really want a look back at one of the most influential films of all time.

Sorry to de-rail the Criterion discussion.

Yes, both the DVDs and blu-rays are numbered the same. When Criterion started releasing films on blu-ray, they felt no reason to start the whole numbering system over at #1 like they did when transitioning from LaserDisc to DVD. Many Criterion collector's were upset by this because like displaying their collection by spine #, and I suppose they didn't like the idea of having gaps in the collection as far as the spine numbering is concerned. It's fairly obvious that not all of Criterion's DVD releases will ever receive the blu-ray upgrade, as well, since there are many OOP DVD releases.

I don't think there's any kind of special algorithm that Criterion uses to determine which movie gets what number. Sometimes it takes Criterion years from the time they are granted the license to release films to the actual time that they finally get around to releasing it to the public. During that time, I'm sure that Criterion is trying to find the best material sources and supplements for the films.

Wikipedia has a nice sortable list of all Criterion releases. You can sort by Blu-Ray easily.

Kino's release. I was pretty impressed with the slipcover alone. I'll watch it in the next few days.

Got the BBS set and Cronos! I'm so pumped! Just watched Cronos the other day though, but haven't seen Easy Rider and The Last Picture Show in quite a while. Can't wait to sit down and explore the other BBS films.
