Right now, I'm having a hard time choosing 2 out of the 4:

Videodrome
Cronos
Robinson Crusoe on Mars
Army of Shadows

Just wondering what would you guys choose if you had to pick 2 movies listed above (based on total package - PQ/AQ/Extras)?
Yeah I am still trying to decide. I think Army of Shadows and Pierrot Le fou, and then its between Videodrome and Robinson Crusoe on Mars, neither of which I've seen.

I would think "Videodrome" would be the obvious choice there.... but others I'm sure will chime in and say otherwise....

I assume by "total package" you mean FILM first, then PQ/AQ/Extras in that order.... either way, I won't split hairs with PQ/AQ, and no amount of extras will trump a better film with a lesser one, so I'd go with:

Army of Shadows
Cronos

That's just personal preference though.... good luck Asian-American-Man.

With B&N's current B2G1 sale I'm thinking about getting the following today:

Videodrome $27.99
Cronos $27.99
Army of Shadwos $27.99
less $27.99 (one free)
less $5 coupon code E7C4D9D
= $50.98 OR $16.99 each title before tax
+ bloody WA State tax of 9.5% $4.84
= $55.82/3 = $18.61 per title delivered

Pretty good deal - but still tempted to wait for the official B&N Criterion sale hopefully by June??

Less than $20 each.... no way I'd chance waiting for another sale.... what if they change the discount, or restrictions, inventory issues, or just flat-out don't have another sale.....

Not to mention you could be enjoying them MUCH sooner than June/July!

I think Criterion is cutting some expenses. I usually pre order all the new releases from their website, and they used to ship them out UPS and they would always arrive on release day, sometimes the Monday before.

But I still haven't received my Army of Shadows or Robinson Crusoe on Mars yet! They shipped it out USPS this time, and it's still not here.

First world problems.

It could be all the crazy snow storms that are causing a bunch of shipping delays.

Why do I have the feeling Criterion is going to announce Le cercle rouge on blu tomorrow? Tweeting about it. "Explore Melville" on the front page of C's site. New pic on the page of the movie.

Has Ryan G gave guesses yet?

Dammit, now you've got me wanting to buy Videodrome and Cronos (Army of Shadows is already on its way).

Even if there is a summer sale at best we'll probably be able to stack one-time coupons on top of a few titles. But my guess is we won't be able to buy piles of $15 Criterions next time around.

And even at that I'd on...I mean you'd only save a few bucks a title by waiting.

Ok, I pulled the trigger. I also used Ebates to get another 4% cash back.

Videodrome $27.99
Cronos $27.99
Army of Shadwos $27.99
less $27.99 (one free)
less $5 coupon code E7C4D9D
= $50.98 OR $16.99 each title before tax
+ bloody WA State tax of 9.5% $4.84
= $55.82/3 = $18.61 per title delivered

(plus 4% cash back)

I hope so. The next Melville if any, should be a new Un Flic IMO. I'm kind of getting tired of upgrading. I rather have new stuff.

Le Deuxieme Souffle would be a terrific upgrade. I love everything about this film; probably one of Melville's darkest films.

Alain Corneau did a fantastic remake (ignore the American critics) of it. The cinematography is one of the most inspired I've seen in a contemporary French film (beautiful yellows throughout the entire film). Unfortunately, the French Blu-ray disc isn't English-friendly:

But there is rather very good looking British SDVD release:

Thanks Beta Man

I ended up picking all of them up - using eBates & BigCrumbs.

Ended up with:

Pierrot le fou
Thin Red Line
Cronos
Videodrome
Army of Shadows
Robinson Crusoe on Mars

for $106.39 after cashback. Hopefully B&N still has Pierrot le fou in stock - don't want that reason to delay my orders.

I don't know why but every time I see people call for Melville I immediately think 'Elevator to the Gallows please'. I know it's not him but I cannot get that association out of my head.

I've only watched it once, and I don't remember it well enough to decide where it ranks among his other movies. I would love to have it come out on blu from Criterion or anyone else.

Cool

I have a dumb question. I have a copy of Repulsion and on the back it says its a follow up for Knife in the Water. Do I need to watch Knife in the Water to understand Repulsion?
