Out of curiosity, are there any other annual sales I should know about in terms of purchasing Criterion BDs? I recently bought my first blu-ray player and would love to pick up some Criterion titles (though not for the MSRPs!).

Numbers "6" and "7" are very enjoyable too..... you didn't happen to list any that I really didn't care for

I don't know that there are any other "normal" sales.... B&N is pretty much "The" Criterion sale-standard, which has been happening twice a year (june/july and then Nov/Dec I believe) for the past three years or so...

Every once in awhile someone throws a sale out that includes Criterion titles (other than the random 20% off at Borders etc.. which doesn't help at all) but rarely does it equal the discounts of the B&N sales, and rarely does it include all of the titles like the B&N sales....

If Criterion.com does another 50% off sale... I'll be thrilled......

I've seen Bottle Rocket, Army of Shadows, Charade, and M.

Of those choices, I think Army of Shadows is easily the most magnificent film. Have you seen anything by Jean-Pierre Melville before? His directorial style is my all-time favorite. In general, his films are quite terse but he says much with little, relying heavily on space, imagery, and elegant cinematography. AoS is a bit different from his slick crime thrillers, but I'd say it's one of his two best films. I strongly recommend it. This film it at least an 8/10 if not 9.

I give lukewarm recommendations to each of the others. Charade is fun enough. It's a very good film but nothing particularly brilliant or daring. If you like the actors, then this is probably a no-brainer. This film is like a strong 7/10.

I haven't seen Bottle Rocket in awhile, but I found it to be analogous to QT's Reservoir Dogs in the regard that I view each of them as immature yet essential stepping stones leading toward the path of greatness that the directors would muster in their subsequent films (Rushmore/PF). Of Wes Anderson's five live-action films, I think that the two worst are the two currently out on Blu-Ray in the Criterion Collection. That said, I'm being overly harsh on BR here because I honestly think it's about a 6/10 film. I'm just pretty wary to drop $20 on it myself.

M was pretty good but felt too much like a holdover from the silent era (of which I'm not a fan). If you like The Third Man or other noirish type crime films or if you don't mind watching silent films, then I'd give it a pretty strong recommendation. Otherwise, I'm not sure I'd recommend a blind-buy. I think I also rated it a 6/10.

I've seen all of these except Army of Shadows. So with that in mind...

Crumb--9/10
One of the best documentaries I've seen. While it goes over R. Crumb's art and career to a certain extent, the larger story is that of Crumb's family and some really unveiled interviews with Crumb and his two brothers.

Bottle Rocket--5/10
I'm not really a Wes Anderson fan, though I don't despise him the way some people (here) do. Bottle Rocket is a fairly harmless indie comedy.

Charade--8/10
I thought it was fairly Hitchcock-esque, which is a fairly common reaction. Strong leads and a fun caper. I saw it after I saw Hitchcock's North By Northwest, which it compares fairly favorable to.

Hunger--6.5/10
There are some amazing scenes in this one. However, I could never figure out why I should care--perhaps because I know nothing of the political/social realm this is set in. Still, it is shot very well with one of the greatest, longest takes I've seen.

M--8/10
A grimy look at the manhunt for a child murderer showcases some interesting plot points while being seen through Fritz Lang's stark vision and eye for iconic scenes.

Shock Corridor--8/10
Samuel Fuller's filmmaking is decidedly infused with the melodrama of the 60s, but while it creates a film that is decidedly dated in tone he still captures an interesting story that is packed with highly amusing characters.

I would upgrade both of my DVDs if Criterion Blu-Rayed them, though.
Yes I know, I got myself a region player back in January but now I have a problem. I am also scared that if it were to break (it's a rather cheap Insignia model) I will be stuck with Blu-ray I cannot watch I know, I know you must wonder if I stay up at night wondering what else I can worry about

I am waiting for Criterion, I have a feeling it will be this year.

I can say with pride all my Criterion (bit it Blu-ray or DVD) have all been watched at least once and in most cases multiple times. It's a bit easier in my case since I don't get as many as some of you guys do.

Hey jcs...sorry to have doubted you. You were right about the Amazon Prime preorder scenario. I finally found it after digging through their help section.

Too busy to read the last days posts, so I catch up with you guys later.

OK...to make this post at least 33% Criterion related...I watched Yi Yi this morning and really enjoyed it...even more than 10 years ago when I first bought and saw the "non-Criterion" release of it on DVD.

Watched the only supplement...quite enjoyable though...Tony Rayns speaking on Edward Yang and Taiwanese Cinema...he's really great to listen to and I've heard him speak on Kon Ichikawa as well.

Sorry if this has been mentioned, but Criterion still lists the original release dates. Amazon has them changed, but if Criterion is shipping them as planned I may order them direct.

The only reason why I chimed in Rich is because it happened to me a year or so ago. Now I piggy back off my wife's prime teacher account...

I think Looking for Mr Goodbar is a Paramount owned film... Heard it was always held back due to music licensing issues. Would maybe be a good Criterion title.

Thanks for your input, very helpful. I picked up Hunger and Breathless and after I went home to print out another coupon (lol) I went to another borders and came away with Paths of Glory (one of my favorite movies of all time) and the seventh seal.

I watched Hunger and I was mesmerized by it. Although the motives didn't resonate with me. Afterwards I looked it up on the net and found out the political history of Ireland and it certainly adds another dimension to the film, I plan on watching it again tomorrow morning.

Just got done with Paths of Glory again and . The PQ is sensational.

Yeah, it's impressive. And I really don't understand why even Kubrick fans tend to overlook it.

Given its obscurity I went into it expecting a rough, low-budget 'early effort' kind of thing and within minutes all I could think was 'whoa, where the hell has this been for the last fifty years'.

I seen that you had it, and while mostly being facetious, I didn't mean "everybody" but just "people" in general.

I'm going to get a look at the new Janus 35mm print of Gold Rush tonight (possibly the next Criterion Chaplin?)...

Has anyone heard anything about Certified Copy possibly making it's way into the collection? Criterion needs to release more Kiarostami on blu. I know the AE version got Pro-B's blessing but it'd be nice.
