I find it funny now when looking back on all the belly-aching that came up when Criterion was selling the replacement cases solely through PayPal. So many people thought it was too much money to spend $5 on the first two cases and then $2.50 for each subsequent case in the same order. Plus, there was FREE shipping included in the price. Now, look at the pricing... $5 across the board PLUS shipping charges. CC Last edited by ccfixx; 03-29-2011 at 02:39 PM. |

I watched The Secret of the Grain last night. I might need to sit on it a bit longer, but as of right now, I was fairly underwhelmed. It wasn't a bad movie by any means, but I don't feel the need to ever see it again. Reminds me of Summer Hours in that way.

I watched that film not really knowing what to expect. When it was over, I couldn't believe how much I enjoyed it. Same went for A Christmas Tale. I'll tell ya, some of those "talky" IFC films were some of the best!

The Secret of the Grain and Summer Hours are among my favorite Criterion Blu-rays. Like italy12, I didn't know what to expect going in and was very surprised by how much I enjoyed them. (Same with Everlasting Moments.) I found them both to be infinitely better than Close-Up or Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence and considerably better than Paris, Texas and Army of Shadows. It's interesting how taste varies from person to person.

Speaking of nostalgia, how about Gloria (1980)? That movie has a very DePalma feel to it.

Paris, Texas just never took off for me. It moved slowly and I never really cared about any of the characters. Summer Hours isn't chock full of action either, but the characters were so believable and the tone is so lighthearted and whimsical--like summer hours--that I didn't care what happened. I was just happy to be along for the ride. It's not what I'd call a deep or profound movie and it does seem to be outside what Criterion normally releases, but I'm glad they did.

wow, Brazil is FINALLY coming out on blu-ray on July 12th BUT it's coming from Universal first NOT Criterion.
unbelievable. I have been thinking about Brazil coming to blu-ray for 4 years, but I never even considered that Universal would issue it first. I'm so bummed even though I'm glad it is finally being released. |

Summer Hours I loved, because of its simple but realistic take on a family dealing with loss and how we look at material items in the wake of such a loss. Originally commissioned by the Musee D'Orsay, I find the film to be one that is easy to relate to. |

I've said for awhile now that Everlasting Moments may be the most criminally overlooked Criterion on blu, although it's obviously just my opinion. I love that film.
