That's when we pass the time discussing packaging and asking when the next BN sale is...

I remember I had this problem too, kept getting the German Blu-ray as the only result. And speaking of the database, why is The Killing listed as "The Killing / Killer's Kiss"? I don't see Blow Out listed as "Blow Out / Murder a la Mod".

The plot synopsis is great, too.

Yeah, that's a pretty strange choice. Even if you're in the camp that believes spoiler concerns are silly for fifty+ year old films (which I'm not, btw) you still have wonder what the upside of that thumbnail might be.

Re: Le Cercle Rouge

The leading article for the German release wasn't in the correct field so when doing a search for the complete title it would return that result rather than all of them. Submitted the correction so that should fix the results as soon as an editor approves it.

Yeah, seriously. It's a release of The Killing, with Killer's Kiss as a special feature. It's not like it has both titles on the front of the case or anything.

I won a Ebay auction today for the "Five Easy Pieces" Blu-Ray from the BBS set...

Very happy as I love the film and really wanted the Blu... But really didn't want to pay for the whole set.

I was thinking that I would like to do a nice long review of Yojimbo a couple of days ago. I suppose I felt like being lazy and (instead) decided to do a quick review regarding the film and Criterion's release.

First, I have to admit that up until roughly a week ago I had NO idea that "Fistful of Dollars" was a remake of this film, with a different setting. Having seen some of "Fistful" I was familiar with the story line prior to watching this film.

What I was unprepared for was all of the great comedy tossed into Yojimbo. At first I was unsure if it was intentional or not, but as the film moved along and the laughs continued to come, I figured that it HAD to have been intentionally funny. To me, this was a welcome element to the story.

To keep this review short and simple I will skip over all of my thoughts as I watched and get straight to my final thought.

Overall I have to give Yojimbo a 3/4 stars. Interesting story, excellent setting, and unexpected comedy make this a fun film to watch. As with most Criterion releases, Yojimbo does fall into the category of "must see". Especially if you a fan of the "Man with no name" trilogy. In fact, I enjoyed Yojimbo so much, that I actually popped in Sanjuro immediately afterwards, just to spend more time in Kurosawa's "world". The problem was that it was like 4 AM and I was beginning to nod off a bit so I decided to save it for (my new weekly ritual) next Sunday's late night projector movie.

Yojimbo is my second Kurosawa film. Ran was my first. I am not sure whay but Ran kind of kept me at an emotional distance. It was a well made film, and I can see why it gets so much praise lavished on it, but I found myself enjoying Yojimbo quite a bit more.

I will award this BD release from Criterion a 4/4 stars. For such an old film, it looks great on BD and when watching it on my PJ, I was wowed more than once. I am a grain LOVER and this transfer is a grain lovers dream.

Thanks for reading.

-Dave

The whole set is worth it though, and was on for 50 bucks about a month ago. I initially only bought mine for Head, back when it first came out around Christmas, and thought that Easy Rider and Five Easy Pieces would be a nice bonus. I love the whole set, although I will admit my love for A Safe Place and Drive, He Said are very faint. The King of Marvin Gardens is one of my new favourite films. It, Head, and Five Easy Pieces are the best out of the set, with The Last Picture Show and Easy Rider coming in second. Next time it's on sale, I recommend that you grab the set, as there are tons of great films in it. I'm biased though.

Taste differs, I like em all except the last two, but that would be my order;
Five Easy Pieces
The Last Picture Show
Head
King of Marvin Gardens
Drive he said
Easy Rider
A safe Place

I did the same for Fear and loathing. It was 29.99 regular, so 24.99. How much was Solaris? My BB didn't have it in stock, its actually what I went there to get.

Seriously! That video belongs in the 400+500+600+ Thread, the 700+800+900+ Thread, or the 1,000+1,500+2,000+ Thread. Not the criterion thread. I only watched into the first three movies...and they weren't even Criterions (they weren't even blu-rays!). I mean, seriously...at least start with the Criterions if you're going to post it on the Criterion thread (if you even buy Criterions!)

Mine's actually this:

Head - 10/10 (BEST. MOVIE. EVAR)
Five Easy Pieces - 9.5/10
The King of Marvin Gardens - 9/10
The Last Picture Show - 8/10
Easy Rider - 7.5/10 (I think it's a bit overrated, at least compared to others in the set and from the era)
Drive, He Said - 6.5/10
A Safe Place - 5.5/10 (it's slowly growing on me)

The BBS set is fantastic. Here's my preference:

Five Easy Peices (just a great film all-around)
The King of Marvin Gardens (very underrated)
The Last Picture Show (almost feels like a "modern" western)
Drive, He Said (strange editing but there is something abouit I like....)
Easy Rider (overrated IMHO)
Head (get stoned and watch this)
A Safe Place (and this is in the Criterion Collection because.....?)

I think you're much too generous on the last 2. Drive, He Said is a mess and A Safe Place is Jaglom trying to mimic a Euro art house film and failing miserably.

Is the B2G1 B&N sale worth the trouble?...or shall I (try to) be patient and wait for the infamous 50% off sale?
