Watched The Mikado and Topsy Turvy for the first time this past week and I was very impressed with each film. I have to admit that those were two titles I was less then enthused about watching, however, since I am a completist, and watching all of them at some point is in my plans, I threw them in and gave 'em the old once over.

I was very entertained!!

Just out of curiosity, which film did you watch first? Do you think that watching them together, or at least fairly close together, changed what you think about them?

I am very anxious to see Orpheus when it is released. My question is does it work as a stand alone film or do I need to watch the other movies in the trilogy to full appreciate it?

I watched Topsy Turvy first..I found that not really being familiar with The Mikado did not detract from my enjoument of the film...it did, however, give me some insight into what went on around that time and why The Mikado was even made.

I watched The Mikado first and followed with Topsy Turvy the next evening. Enjoyed them both.

EDIT: Oops...I multi-quoted out of order!

Topsy Turvy was awesome! I have yet to see The Mikado though, or at least Criterion's version. I acutally bought the film because Jim Broadbent, Timothy Spall, Shirley Henderson, and Kevin McKidd are all totally awesome actors, and the plot sounded interesting.

That would mean they would have to actually watch them instead of buying them for collecting and putting them all in order on the shelves
Hey! I buy my Criterions on watchability level! There's only 6 I haven't watched yet. Black Narcissus, because I keep buying new stuff and it knocks it out of my queue (I will watch it next week, as I'm on Vacation), Senso, because DHL have it trapped in their system due to the Canada Post issues, so it should be coming soon, and The Killing/Killer's Kiss, Naked, and If... because they haven't been released yet.

I was only kidding, people can collect if they want as long as they don't ask me to pay for them

The strike is more or less done so things should be moving, I place my order yesterday for The Great Dictator & Solaris with Amazon.ca.

As for Black Narcissus, I say watch it soon, the movie is truly wonderful, very well worth it. I should upgrade it to Blu-ray soon myself.

Oh I know the strike is done, I'm eagerly waiting for my movies now. I was just kidding around in my last post as well.

I have watched Black Narcissus before, which is why I bought it. I just haven't watched my BD copy to see how fantastic it really looks.

From that picture, it seems obvious that 10 Years of Rialto Pictures is on that list.

I haven't heard that rumor and I can't imagine it happening regardless.

why? Didn't Criterion release Robocop on dvd? or was it laserdisc? I know it was one of them...

Robocop DVD came out in 1998--- Pre-DVD boom when some studios weren't yet sold on the format.

I don't see them re-licensing it to Criterion. Frankly, there are more pressing titles, too.

Well..."People on Sunday" arrived today. The packaging is nice and the booklet is very well done. Good job Criterion!

Looks like a "silents" barrage this week. I received MoC's "Coere Fidele" yesterday, "People on Sunday" today and should get BFI's "The Great White Silence" in the next day or so. The only other pending order that I can afford at this time is the Keaton box set that should be coming in the next 2 weeks or so.

Keep the silents coming!

I see. Too bad, it would sure be nice to get a true "special edition" quality release of this film...

Default Getting ready for the sale.

I'm getting ready for the sale. I have 11 DVD's and 18 instant watch movies in my queue. I should be able to see them all before the sale ends. But I do have a budget.

Right now I have, in my DVD queue: The Last Metro, The Seventh Seal, Grey Gardens, Paris Texas, Close-Up, Days of Heaven, The Makioka Sisters, Mystery Train, The Magician, Seven Samurai, and Walkabout. I also have Black Moon in my saved DVD's.

In my instant viewing I have: The Leopard, Diabolique, Smiles of a Summer Night, Howards End, Le Cercle Rouge, The Red Balloon, The Last Emperor, The Secret of the Grain, The Thin Red Line, Kes, Senso, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Killing, Cul-De-sac, and Playtime.

I'm staying away from all DVD's in the sale. I am only going to buy blu rays. I bought If during the last sale, and I do not want to buy a DVD, only to hear that it will be on blu ray later, especially if the price is the same. I may also buy Pierrot le fou on ebay or Amazon. I just watched it yesterday.
