Watched Pale Flower again last night. I keep trying to figure out where I've seen this movie's "Hollywood" version, and can't put my finger on it.... perhaps there are themes I find in several films.

I haven't cracked into the supplementals, perhaps that'll give me some insight.

At my local B&N, all of those early releases were still offered in digipaks. The one exception was Chungking Express, which was in an amaray case and the indicia indicated that it was a Second Printing. I'm curious if the other titles in question are labeled Second Printings if they come in amarays.

Daigoro: for the record, the following Criterion BDs originally came in digipaks...

The Third Man (now Out of Print)
The Man Who Fell to Earth (now Out of Print)
Bottle Rocket
Chungking Express
The Last Emperor
El Norte
The 400 Blows
The Last Metro
Last Year at Marienbad

Watched Black Moon, Solaris, People on Sunday, The Music Room and Le Corbeau this weekend. Almost caught up. Enjoyed all of the movies very much. The Music Room was a haunting film very enjoyable as was Solaris. Black Moon looked wonderful, but the movie definitely leaves you scratching your head. Still some of the best Cinematography I've ever seen.
People on Sunday was light and fun. I think one of the best things about it IMO is the fact the characters do not over act which was still rather common in those times.

Barnes and Noble's just emailed me about my Leon Morin Preorder saying its still delayed and requesting I extend it 30 days or they will cancel the order. I think I'm just going to cancel it. Its not one of my favorite Melville movies.

No need to Mention Le Corbeau it has always been one of my favorite films being a huge Clouzot fan. I wish Criterion would get the rights back from StudioCanal and while they are at it get the rights for Quai des Orfevres back as well. Both deserve Blurays IMO.

Really, most of the Criterions I wanna buy haven't even been released yet ("The Killing", "Dazed and Confused"). So I'll do the bulk of my pickup during November.
LOL. I hate when that happens and can't decide what to get.

I go into the room I keep my movies in (has the components in there too etc) and sometimes I stand there for 30 minutes trying to pick out a film to watch, and end up surfing the instant-watch-netflix movies for 30 more minutes, then I just listen to some music instead!

Being that we're all contributors to this Criterion forum, and that we're Arty Criterion snobs, it always amazes me when I peruse the other forums and people are salivating over the latest crappy film to be coming on Blu. With so many quality films still not on blu, some wonder why there's no director's cut of Daredevil or Batman and Robin.... Oy .

Rant over

To each his own... just as long as I get more Bergman, Kurosawa on Blu. And where's my Bunuel?!?!

Hehe. We've been bombarded with too many choices. Happens to me, too, and I sometimes end up watching what's on my TiVo!

Back to topic, picking up my last batch of Blu wants today-- Fat Girl, Hunger, and Revanche.

I'm also trying to decide if I want to buy 3 films of Jules Dassin on DVD-- Rififi, Night and the City and The Naked City-- or should I wait for a Blu release (if they ever will). I just discovered his films recently and love them; I'm also intrigued by the whole issue of blacklisting back then which I'm not familiar. I may also get Roeg's Bad Timing on DVD. I'll decide when I'm at B&N later today.

I would hold out on Rififi since there's already a UK blu-ray release. Criterion's DVD release is due for an overhaul, I think, similar to what they did with Shock Corridor, The Naked Kiss, Walkabout, etc. The other two will probably make it to blu-ray eventually, but I think it's 2-3 years away.

I think there are two factors at play.

1) people have different tastes..... And while you or I may still search the internet to get more concrete rumors (oxy moron perhaps) about a release date for Lawrence of Arabia..... People may really enjoy Daredevil 2 or whatever.

2) I think some people like to drum up excitement for a title to convince themselves that they should buy it, when in fact they buy everything anyways. This is more common after-the-fact though, with people making justifications for TERRIBLE (my opinion of course) movies, right around the time that title happens to be on sale for $6.99

Although I received Kiss Me Deadly, The Night of the Hunter, and Seven Samurai pretty quickly, I did get the delay notification about High and Low. I opted to keep the order active until it comes in.

I don't understand your reasoning for cancelling. The meaning of "timely" is relative here. Suppose I get it in a week or two at the sale price. If you wait until then to reorder, you'd pay a higher price, but you'd get it around the same time I do. On the other hand, if you wait 6 months until the next sale to get it for the sale price, how is that more timely than getting it in 2 weeks?

High and Low is the better film but Pale Flower looks a lot better in Blu. Either one will do.

High and Low. Great film, and the a/v seems to be as good as it could be (a lot of the problems look source related). Not to mention the supplements are all fantastic.

What Criterion titles are soon OOP? I don't own a region free player yet but since the B&N sale I might purchase one or two essential Criterions if they are OOP soon. Might be a rather good investment.

I used to buy pretty much every DVD once it hit $5.00, with black Friday sales and whatnot I grabbed pretty much all the $2 DVD's on Amazon. There were of course specific titles I researched and sought out at higher prices regardless of sales, and I went for a few Criterions and other special editions. But I also enjoyed picking up bargain titles. Why not? I mostly did that because it had become cheaper than a rental. That is not to say I was out buying Legally Blonde 2 and Beverly Hills Chihuahua because they hit $2. I still had standards where there was no price that would make me buy a DVD, but I could go pretty low on the "critically acclaimed" scale for an action title for instance - and still enjoy it. I watched prettty much all of those DVD's at least once so it's not like they went to waste. Netflix has probably changed the "buying" attitude for many people, but I actually don't have Netflix (nor is my internet fast enough to deal with HD streaming).

Despite not yet having Netflix, I'm still far less likely to go out and grab any random blu-ray than I was in the DVD days. Mostly because my DVD collection reached absurd proportions (1000+ titles easily), and it was alot of work to get rid of about 750 of them to get money to start my blu-ray collection. I just don't want to repeat that size of a collection, and I'm sure there's alot of movies I wouldn't want to watch twice anyway

The absolute WORST reason to buy a film. Jeezus, buy something you're actually going to like watching instead of buying something for its possible future value!

To answer your question, though, there are no titles that are soon to be OOP, as far as I am aware. Titles will either just show up on Criterion's site as OOP, or Criterion will make a post about it on their website if something is going OOP.
