some Criterion DVDs/BR which doesn't have english subtitles for the English dialogues portions :

- Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence (as posted above)

- Yi-Yi (like Carlos, that's a bit annoying- there's something like 5-10% of dialogues (imdb.com says a few words in English, that's wrong) in English which are not subtitled. Some dialogues are sometimes difficult to follow because all the characters are from Taipei or Japan (?) and one of this commercial-business talk turns into a discussion about life, love, meaning of life, etc... in a nutshell, the essential plot of this movie. And I was a little bit annoyed to misunderstand a particular line or word.

- Wings of Desire : not that hard to follow. While most of the movie is in German, there is as much dialogues in French, than in English.
And all dialogues in English (all the scenes with Peter Falk) aren't subtitled.
But, keep in mind that there's a lot of scenes in English with Peter Falk.

I'm a French customer, and I've never understood the logic behind Criterion and their subtitles : why no English SDH (= acronym for "Subtitles for the deaf and hard-of-hearing") subtitles when the movie as some part of the movie in English ? by which miracle deaf or ear impaired people will be able to hear suddenly the English parts when all other Criterion movies have English SDH subtitles ?

I mean : it's nice for a movie such as "Kes" or "Fish Tank" to have all the slang translated into English SDH subtitles.
even on amazon.co.uk I remember some English customers who said that had some troubles to follow all the dialogues in Fish Tank (and the young sister of Mia has some really strong slangs skills I was impressed...)
but if Criterion policy is to have English SDH on each DVD/BR in English/American in order to allow their deaf customers to understand their movies, why the hell did they block a part of the Criterion catalog to deaf and ear impaired people ?
(English SDH subtitles could be annoying for foreign customers with some movies with a lot of sounds like Repulsion (I prefer to watch it without subtitles)- but Criterion is not there to sell for non-american customers- outside region A- I understand that)

why I don't understand from Criterion policy is: those deaf and ear impaired customers are American or Canadian and would like to buy a Criterion movie without having to check everytime if some portions aren't subtiles and cancel their order if necessary.

Was it something like 'thou' or something similarly archaic? There were a few times (mostly early, I think) I found myself thinking 'okay, folksy is one thing but this getting a little Old Testament now'.

Having no frame of reference I have no idea if it was a normal part of speech or not but they did kind of stand out (though obviously not far enough out for me to actually remember what they were).

I wonder if american organization for deaf could take this up with Criterion so they would put full english subtitles on all their future releases.

Re-releasing new editions would not probably be worth the cost though.

Does Criterion even bother with non-English subs either? I'm English, but there are tons of people in North America who do not have English as a primary language, or even speak/read it. How could they watch a foreign language film from Criterion if the subs they do put on the film are only in English? I'm not trying to be critical, but I'm honestly curious.

The "'missing the point' thing" refers to the fact that fdm's posts imply that I've said Let the Right One In should be classified as an "important" film, and therefore eligible for inclusion in the Criterion Collection, when in fact, I've said no such thing. The only point I've made is that the Criterion Collection, despite their mission statement, has a policy of letting less-than-important films into their catalog. My original reply to Beta Man made this pretty clear, and was absolutely relevant to his statement that Let the Right One In should not be included because it didn't fit the Criterion mantra of "Important Films."

I honestly couldn't give a good goddamn if Let the Right One In gets a Criterion release or not...that specific question means nothing to me. It's the implication that Criterion never, ever lets anything less than a cinematic masterwork into the sacred Collection. haha The argument that such-and-such film "isn't important enough for the Collection" rings hollow when the Collection already includes Armageddon...regardless of what such-and-such film is.

I went out and bought Sweet Smell of Success and Pale Flower today. Both of them are blind buys.

I just got done watching Sweet Smell of Success, and it's another movie I can't believe I hadn't seen until now. It's a great sleazy film.

It would make a good double feature with Ace In The Hole.

Joe, your mouth is as big as a basket, and twice as empty.

Sweet Smell of Success may be the most quotable movie ever. Certainly one of them.

I love movies driven by great dialogue, and this is definitely one of the best.

You are right, but that is why they are region-locked to A, primarily english speaking countries. You could also say the same though for many region-B locked releases in Europe that have No English subs.

BTW: The Salo review was excellent and insightful to its point...

I just finished watching L'Atalante. I have to say I wasn't super impressed by it. Granted I thought it was a good movie and I enjoyed it. However, I found it to be a little boring. I also do not get what the big deal about Jean Vigo is. I have this feeling had he not died at such a young age, then this film, and to some extent the others on the disc, would not be remembered or held in such high regard. Just my opinion.

Before you viewed the film, or any of the disc, what were you looking to get out of it? What was going to impress you? Did you watch any of the supplements yet?

I picked up Carlos at Barnes & Noble yesterday and they had several BLU copies. I was thrilled to get a mint copy. The case artwork is really one of my favs this year. I know some disliked it when the title was announced but I loved it immediatly.

I still need to get the Phantom Carriage but this week is killer for releases. Between two Pink Floyd Box sets and Ben Hur etc.. I had to put some titles off.

I wonder if Criterion is going to do a 3 reasons for Salo. Perhaps, it should only be 2 reasons...

I didn't have any specific expectations for it. From everything I read it made it out to be something extraordinary. To me it wasn't. Like I said, I like the movie, I just do not see what was so special about it. I have not watched any of the supplements yet, other than the previous films he made. Which were also good. My whole point is, it seems like people who die before their time, their work gets elevated when in reality more often than not, it shouldn't be.

I would suggest checking out the features, as they explain how Vigo's work was viewed by fellow filmakers, especially the Truffaut interview. The way I see him is that his technique and point of view on his films were what was so visionary about him. The things he was doing were well beyond what was going on at the time, which is why his work is so revered. Frankly, I think it is the best release Criterion has made so far this year, but that is my opinion....

I will check out the features the next time I give the movie a spin. There are tons of movies that I don't appreciate as much as I tend to after subsequent viewings. For example, the first time I watched Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast I did not like it at all. I have watched it multiple times since and each time I like it even more. I would say I actually love that film now. So in a few months time or so I will give L'Atalante another go and see what happens. Also, I agree that it is a tremendous release by Criterion. Having all his films on there is a treat. I am also someone can appreciate a film even if I don't care for it as much as most.

No, it was a short sentence, like an expression or figure of speech. I really can't remember what it was but it's still in use somewhat round these parts, and its subtitling was different to what it actually is, but of course sounded very similar.

And yes, using thee and thou is a normal part of speech in South Yorkshire and the West Country, or at least used to be. In fact, if I recall correctly, the West Country is even more archaic. Where someone from Barnsley may say "Thou art", someone from Gloucestershire may say "Thee bist"! Even in East Yorkshire where are I am, where people speak comparatively normally, we still use Thee now and again.
