Hunger is an extremely moving and well made film, but it is also tough to sit through. (especially the last act) I have viewed my copy only twice since I picked it up. (having said that, I am very glad the film is in my collection)

The video presentation is practically flawless. (2K transfer of the original camera negative) Michael Fassbender gives a top notch performance under McQueen's direction. Ya, I'd recommend Hunger.

That's great to hear...I'm considering picking it up soon. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing his performance, he's an excellent actor. I hope it's not too hard to sit through for me. While I've watched way more disturbing films, this comes across as one of those films that is more disturbing because of how realistic the subject matter is, while other disturbing films aren't as difficult to watch because they are more over-the-top in their presentation. Does that make any sense?

If you mean this sounds like it would be a lot harder to watch than something like A Clockwork Orange then yeah, it makes perfect sense.

Just hit 100 Criterion Blu-rays with the addition of Carlos and The Phantom Carriage today! I have to say, I have loved all 100 of them and regret nothing

I do believe that if Vigo's work was made this year and released there would be scant praise for it. I found it worthy enough for me to keep in my own modest but growing collection and will view it again. There was a solicitaion of an opinion between two films and I offered mine. Sorry if you were offended. Perhaps you could answer the OPs question and give your thoughts to help make the choice.
I think his films still hold their own today. It was my first time seeing Zéro de conduit, and the "parade" scene definitely stands out against anything I have seen lately.

I respect dvdbeaver on almost anything. I have not seen the film, but after reading this review, seems like I should pick it up. You don't hear 'best blu-ray release ever' very often. Regardless of what you think of the film, looks like they put Mailick in the formats highest echelon with this release...

"This may be the most beautifully shot film since the Blu-ray format evolved..." is certainly a strong statement

I admit to a few things:

1) I haven't seen this.

2) I'm excited to see it based on the feedback I've heard.

3) I didn't know Brad Pitt was in it (not that it matters one way or the other)

4) I have no idea what this is about (I never stopped to ask, because after-all, it's Terrance Malick)

I just scrolled down and looked at the screen-shots, and didn't read any of the text.....

I pretty much just planned on blind-buy it, regardless of transfer, review, studio, etc.... because I certainly didn't have the time or availability to catch it in theaters...... It looks like that blind-buy has been tarnished (if you will) because I have now learned more about the film in the last 30 seconds than I knew in the months leading up to now, but nonetheless, I'm going in basically blind, and if these screenshots and the praise from your quote (which again I admit to not reading!) are any indication.... I'm set to be floored!

Beta, I am pretty much in the same boat as you on this, although I did know Pitt was in it....

If you've read up on it..... you probably already know

It's graphic.... no doubt about that..... and as much as you think you can mentally prepare yourself for it, seeing it is a whole other thing altogether.

I look at it as an example of "if you have power, and if you wanted to completely degrade someone.... how far could you go" but that said... I think it's good in that sense.... I think it's good in the sense that the cinematography is actually beautiful if you can get past the material, and I think it's good at what it sets out to do with the "shock" since the message is clearly portrayed.....

With that said... I don't think it's "Great" but I pull more out of it to enjoy with each viewing, but many can't get through the first one.... so take that as a warning.

Beta Man, thanks for the reply and your view. I'm loking forward to seeing this movie. I can recall the last movie I saw that disturbed me was Kids, with that said I am looking forward in viewing this film. I have read many articles about the film Salo, so I have an idea of what to expect. I also read the review here and looked at the screen shots as well.

I think you mean Park Circus Arkadin...I ordered a copy of it and "The Kid" on Sept. 16. Not due to ship until Oct. 20 at least (due to the Sony fire). When did you order your copy?

EDIT: Sorry...didn't bother reading ahead.

Beta Man is completely right. If you've read up on the film and know what to expect, it really is not as difficult to watch as it would be if you've had no warning, and it makes it easier to appreciate the quality and meaning of the film itself.

So just "a mark on early film history" caught me off guard. Opinion is yours.
Well put Spidey...and I did not know about Vigo or his place in film history, until Criterion. The fact that one of his films was silent, didn't hurt either.

Nope, I didn't know that. I knew about the US Coen Bros collection, but it has different films in it. I have most of these films, so I'll be looking forward to the single disc edition

Oh, snap!
I hate being teased - I want to know what this film is, so we can derail this thread onto an interesting topic.
Great films?
What makes a great film?
Whose opinion counts?
Why isn't Conan the Barbarian in the Criterion Collection?

The Peter Cowie visual essay included as a supplement for TPC is very interesting and informative.

[Show spoiler]Bergman saw TPC more than 100 times in his lifetime, and C. Chaplin commented that the TPC was probably the greatest film he had ever seen.
