I want to make sure that I pick up some that won't be coming to Blu for a long time, if ever. I was thinking that their last d.v.d. only release, Le enfance nue would be a good candidate....along with Louie Bluie, Letters from Fontainhas and the Josef von Sternberg boxset. Is it safe to say these won't be seeing a bluray urelease anytime soodn? Any word of an upgrade of Do'des-kaden (I hope I gUot that righdt)? Nothing urks me more than buying a d.v.d. only for it be upgraded to blu soon afterwards. Happy watching!
I would HIGHLY recommend the von Sternberg silents! I don't think we'll see them on blu in this country anytime soon. Possibly a region B from Eureka/Masters of Cinema, if we're lucky!

I'm a big fan of he silents and bought this boxset after reading about it and some persuasion from the gang here.

OK Oildude...let's see if the planets lined up for us again. Tuesday I will likely pick up my copy of Fanny and Alexander and a reordered copy of the Larisa Shepitko Eclipse set.

Well, to be fair, Spartacus wasn't really a Kubrick film, in the grand sense. Much of the first hour or so was shot by director Anthony Mann before he was fired and Kubrick replaced him. So he basically came on board as a replacement.

I thought he only shot the beginning portion when Spartacus bites that guard. That's what I saw in one of the features on the Criterion DVD.

Spartacus doesn't really qualify as a Kubrick film in any way, shape, or form. Kirk Douglas called all the shots, which chafed Kubrick to no end. It's really what drove Kubrick from Hollywood and the United States to England, where he lived for the rest of his life and made all his subsequent films.

[Show spoiler]- Antichrist
- Paris, TX
- Chronos
- Something Wild
- House
- Night of the Hunter

OR should I got with one of these ( which I like )

- Seven Samurai
- Videodrome
I would go for Night of the Hunter and Seven Samurai.

As a whole, both in quality of the releases and of the movies, I think it is representative of the best Criterion is able of.

It is the type of monstruous releases I think of when I think of the "Criterion treatment".

And my quite damaged digipack of Night of the Hunter always make me cringe a little when I stare at it, but hey ! life goes on.

I heard that Douglas TRIED to call all the shots, and that he brought Kubrick on because he thought he could manipulate him, but he didn't get his way and Kubrick made the film the way he wanted to.

New hint for Februrary:

To be completely honest, I don't have idea of what this could be !

EDIT: Well, from a cap posted in Facebook I can safely say this one is Sans Soleil . So, does this mean La Jetee is coming to BD too?

We can safe assume so. Sans Soleil/La Jetee are currently available in a single release. Both of them share spine #387 too. One up, five/six to go . Let's hope Criterion pulls its game together so they can give us Fassbinder's World in a Wire, that would be by far one of the nicest surprises.

I own all 3, and my favourite is The Leopard, followed by Senso, and then Lola Montes. Lola Montes is the kind of film you have to be in the mood for in order to watch. I have a thing for Burt Lancaster though, and I'm into 19th century history. Senso and The Leopard are almost like companion pieces, as they are from the same time period.

I'd go with The Leopard first because it's more expensive, and then get Senso. Both come with butchered English copies BTW.

It's an elaborately staged, historic costume drama, with some fine acting, cinematography, and writing. Lots of period details. The battle scenes are well done. It does a superb job showing the outward and inward struggles of the main character, played by Burt Lancaster, as he comes to terms with changing times.

I appreciate the little elements of realism in the film, things like how people sweat indoors in the Sicilian summer and have to sit or stand near windows for the breeze. Also how, when a group of passengers stops to visit a church during a long carriage trip, they are covered with a layer of dust from the unpaved roads. This attention to detail elevates the film.

It is a long film, but a classic. It reminds me of Gone with the Wind in many ways.
