I would definitely pay $50 for this title but not $75.

It's becoming difficult to find one for $50 but I agree that $75 is still too expensive. From what I've seen, auctions are hovering around the $60-$65 mark.

Has anyone here seen Ride With the Devil? Thoughts?

Is By Brakhage worth a purchase? At the retail $80 it seems like much too risky of a buy, but for $27 after the 25% off coupon, I would consider it. What do you all think?

I would strongly consider watching a couple of his short films to get a feel for his style. You can find many of them on Youtube. Of course, they won't be great quality, but you'll get an idea for what to expect. Personally, I can't stand his work and it is DEFINITELY not for everyone.

I was thinking about buying The Last Emperor on bluray, but i understand there is a longer cut only available on dvd. are there any plans to release the longer cut on BD? should i wait it out or is the current release worth buying on BN right now?

Also, I want to buy 12 angry men but it does not have the BN %50 discount (i obviously missed out on the early pre-order). are there any chances of it being included in the sale? it is my understanding that the sale ends a day before 12 angry men is released...

if its a must have for u get it now by all means. however, there are sales coming up. if u want to wait a little while u can get it for $10 or $15, instead of what some paid on here $19.99

I do not know if the longer cut will ever make it to Blu-ray. I have the Blu-ray from Criterion and it's quite beautiful. I would say get it during the sale for a good price if you really want it, for me it's worth it.

I really like it. His work is as daring and experimental as you can get, and his stuff really requires patience to enjoy and understand. Brakhage comes off as pretty pretentious at times in his interviews, but he's an interesting guy. There are a ton of films in the set. You get your moneys worth, thats for sure.

I blind-bought (almost) all of my Criterions and the only one I regret is By Brakhage. I don't mind owning it, but there are other Criterions I wish I had picked up instead. At least I got it during one of these sales, so it wasn't like I blew full-price on it.

This one surprised me. I enjoyed the story quite a bit and while I tend to really hate Tobey Maguire, he did a very good job here. The film does a good job of exploring the various mindsets of the citizens during the Civil War.

As one of my least favorite Criterion releases, I'd be tempted to say "don't bother at all". ;-) However, if I don't get all snarky I'd think your best bet will be to get the current edition.

I enjoyed it, but it's not one of the strongest films in Criterion's roster. The film looks gorgeous and the sound is terrific.

It's an interesting part of the Civil War which is often forgotten.

Where is this 25% coup that you and another poster has alluded to?

Also, for clarification, this is members only right? Several people are under the impression it's for non-members and can be used online.

This is what I found on another site:

A couple of new 25% coupons are coming later in the week. Looks like one for members and another for all customers.

Also there might be a bunch of 20% member coupons coming soon. I think they are going to be sent out in the mail to select members during the holidays. Looks like you will receive a online code along with a store coupon that are valid until around Christmas.

I haven't posted here in months, so I don't know any rumors of releases or anything like that.

But has Criterion released the number of films they had in agreement with IFC yet? I know it's a long shot, but I noticed Sleeping Beauty doesn't have a planned US release, and is being released February 6th in the UK. I haven't seen it, but it looks interesting. And the fact that I've been in love with Emily Browning since Series of Unfortunate Events makes this film even more desirable. Without trying to be too perverse, her being nude almost the entire film excites the 13 year old virgin in me. (not literally).

Anybody think there is a chance in Hell that Criterion would release it?

[Show spoiler]

just picked up the "First Films of Samuel Fuller" Eclipse 3-DVD set for $12 and change using a $8 coupon.

looks from the packaging that there are no suppliments/extras on these, just the films themselves.

are any of the other Eclipse sets worth picking up?

Ok, but doesn't that pretty much preclude you from ever watching the movie version? One thing Criterion does well is give a good sense of context. Buying the Criterion release of Fanny and Alexander and only ever watching one cut of it, when two are included for a reason, seems a bit silly to me.
