Bergman Island is already out on blu. It is a supplement on The Seventh Seal BD.

Nice list of upgrade wants. A lot of mine are on there. But you forgot two big ones:

Le Samourai
The Cranes are Flying

I could add others I would love to see upgraded - all the Soviet films, Picnic at Hanging Rock, The Naked Prey, the Teshigahara set, etc - but Le Samourai is number one for me, by a small margin over The Cranes are Flying. Of course, the problem is there are so many deserving of upgrades that eveyone's list would add up to the entire collection.

Ah yes I forgot that Bergman Island was on The Seventh Seal. The ones I listed though are only the DVDs that have been released DVD-only since Criterion started releasing Blu-rays.

You are right....missed that part.

As Roseanne Roseanna-danna would say: "Never mind"

But from your list I would pick The Spy Who Came in from the Cold and The Human Condition, two of my top upgrade wants that will likely be a long time in coming.

This has likely been discussed already and if so I missed it, but I am curious why Criterion did not release blu-rays along with DVDs for some of these DVD-only releases during the blu-ray era? I am guessing it is because they were being cautious about commiting resources to blu-ray. I have the impression they were relatively late getting into the format..... I am guessing they waited to see who came out on top of the format war, then moved into hi-def slowly at first.

Regardless of the reason, this likely means even greater delays for those DVD-only releases that were released during this period that I would like to see on blu.

It also has to do with the time frame of when Criterion acquired the rights to some of the films. The licensing rights for some of those films were negotiated before blu-ray came into the picture and Criterion, for one reason or another, didn't go back to renegotiate the rights for a blu-ray release when it came time to release it on DVD. Sometimes, Criterion sits on films for many years before they are able to get around to releasing them on disc.

Yeah, I got the e-mail too. Too bad it is only on the titles pictured in the e-mail and not valid on the 2 Suzuki titles.

They were quotes on several occasions - Downhill Racer, Rosselini's War Trilogy - that the original elements weren't in good enough condition to warrant a blu release. Racer has considerable print damage, so I understand their reasoning in a way.

Some would think I would say the obvious and go with one of the Godard films or Dillinger, but I will just go by those since this is all in fun and say the one that "NEEDS" an upgrade is the Sirk film most likely.

This talk is making me glad I blind bought it from the B&N sale. I'm a sucker for a good low-key intimate character drama.

I noticed that the email mentioned Le Havre getting a Criterion release in 2012. Was this already known?
