...hopefully!
They may have corrected it on later pressings. I know the initial pressing didn't configure right on 16x9 TVs either, and that was later fixed.

I'm thinking you're not the only one. Brief Encounters is just a perfect small film: "Rarely has so much been done with so little." And I'm pinching myself thinking about the other three being available on blu.

We all knew Last Temptation was going to make it to blu sooner or later, but A Night to Remember is an unexpected bonus, too. First time I saw it, I thought it was just an old movie about the Titanic, but wow....an to get to see a clean print on blu is gonna be great.

When's the buy 2, get one free sale? ...an that L/C box set is almost a hundred bucks.

That's not true--the releases that have new cover art/a simultaneous re-release of the movie on DVD have new transfers. Blu-ray upgrades that have the same art as the original DVD (e.g. Harakiri, Dazed and Confused, Fanny and Alexander) do not have new transfers.

Fear and Loathing had a new transfer, despite having the same cover art as the existing Criterion DVD. It may have been from the same master, but if so, Criterion did a TON of clean-up on it. There's dirt all over the DVD transfer, and virtually none to be seen on the BD transfer.

These are the type of Soviet films I would love to see transition to Blu-ray Perhaps Criterion could eventually do Grigori Chukhrai's Ballad of a Soldier, and also surprise us with The Forty-first. These will be special upgrades in the library.

This is not entirely true either. For example Fanny and Alexander, Rushmore and Charade have new transfers, but no DVD re-releases (though the last one had slightly different cover art.)

January seems to be the weak month for me, although even that has Godzilla which will probably be one of their more popular sellers. Bella de Jour and Moment of Truth are at least semi interesting for me as blind buys as well .

February has 3 titles I"m highly interested in (Anatomy of a Murder, Three Outlaw Samurai, World on a Wire), I pre-ordered two of them thanks to a price mistake, and I'm sure I'll pick up Outlaw Samurai at the next 50% sale.

March for me has 4 interesting titles (for me personally), with 1 of them being a box set. The only one I'm probably never going to consider ever purchasing is "The War Room". A couple of these titles should have pretty massive appeal as well. Just a really strong month.

Yeah I agree Pat, the Lean set and Letters especially, definitely make up for another month of no Chaplin. That will be an expensive month, as that Lean set is a must-have. It's not the kind of release you wait till a 50% off B&N sale in July to get. Hopefully there may be some sort of a sale somewhere to bring the cost down a little. I read another post also say that the Lean set may be the release of the year. I cannot argue with that, although World on a Wire is tough to beat too.

You never know, B&N may discontinue those sales. I think someone will have it on sale for almost 50% off and then you may not have to wait 4 months to get it....

The Last Temptation of Christ DVD is almost 12 years old, they have to be doing a new transfer. I'm kind of glad they didn't change the artwork, I always liked that one.

I was hoping for another Amazon price error. But I guess no dice this month.

I'm not in a hurry though, as most of these will be my 1st time seeing them. If I've already waited 50, 70, or almost 100 years (all multiples of my lifetime) on some of these Criterion/Kino's to finally see them for the first time. What's a mere 4 months?

2 Soviet films that I wish Criterion had are Marlen Khutsiyev's July Rain and I am Twenty. These 2 films are the closest thing to a "New Wave" style Soviet film. Should be right up Criterion's alley.

Here is July Rain's trailer:

I must say, you're pretty sophisticated for a 10-year-old.

I won't be waiting for a sale, that set will be expensive but I will be get it right away in March. Lean is one of my favorite director along with Capra, Kurosawa and Eisenstein.
