Thank you for your email.

We are preparing a corrected run of the "White" Blu-ray disc and
CARLOS disc. These discs are expected to be available January 2012.
At that time, we'll reach-out to you with details on exchanging your
disc for a new one, directly from us. Please let me know if you have
any questions or concerns, and thank you for supporting Criterion!

+1
I was able to see a nice 35mm print of Two Lane Blacktop at The Astor theatre in Melbourne, which has a really huge screen.
Masters of Cinema have released this film in region B, but it has one of the most dreadful covers ever - here.
I believe Hellman has said he's been supervising a new transfer, but I don't know if that's what MoC used.
I think I'll hold out for a Criterion upgrade sometime in the future...

I love both Branded to Kill and Pale Flower, but I agree that Pale Flower is the safer blind-buy.

Salo is always a worthwhile buy even if you intend to watch once and sell. It's a shame that most members here dismiss the film at face value. Never realizing the darker, power archetype structures it represents so well. If you watch the special features you will find out the director was killed shortly after filming. A real loss as he was intent on making more films.

This. Existential anxiety. Plus, Warren Oates is great in this movie.

Whoa, I've missed a lot in the past few days, being busy with holiday stuff and all. I finally got to watch my copies of Kiss Me Deadly and Stagecoach on BD, and enjoyed the hell out of them. I also revisited Yojimbo/Sanjuro this week. I might be able to squeeze in the English () versions of The Seventh Seal, Senso, and The Leopard (not everyone in my family can handle subs due to a wide variety of reasons).

I'm waiting for Branded to Kill to come in the mail from B&N (), but Pale Flower was an excellent blind buy for me. Of course, I haven't really disliked any of the Japanese films I've bought in the collection so far. Out of the 10 (counting Branded to Kill) I've purchased, only Hausu and Kuroneko weren't blind buys. Only Kagemusha was one I wasn't totally enamored with on the first viewing. Highly enjoyable, yes, but compared to the other Kurosawas I've watched, it seemed to be lacking.

watched the TV version of 12 Angry Men that's included as an extra. Wow, that one was not in good shape, the visuals were very rough, and the soundtrack sounds pretty strange as well, sounds like the production was shot near a swimming pool.
Must have been a kinescope.

also kinda surprised the lack of Lumet audio commentary on the film version, he did do ones for many of his other films.

Checked and it is a "BD-ROM" with "AVC" encoding and the bitrate occassionally gets up to 30+ Mbps, so it is a blu-ray.

Much of the film was shot in low light; even many outdoor shots appear to have been made on overcast days. It appears as though some detail may have been lost in the restoration process; there is a short before/after demo in the Pierre Lhomme supplement. In the scene where a character is waiting to parachute from a plane, the interior of the plane's fuselage devolves into digital noise, so some of the problems may be attributable to the transfer. That being said, there are a few sharp/contrasty scenes, which appear to have been lighted differently.

In the Pierre Lhomme supplement, Lhomme states that the colors were de-saturated during post processing. It's my personal opinion that the film would have been as effective if it had been shot in B&W.

The film was seen with Sony's 40EX500 TV and S570 blu-ray player. The digital noise, mentioned above, wasn't visible from the chair, but can be clearly seen from 2-3 feet away. All the TV's filtering, cinemotion, motionflow, theater mode, etc. was turned off, which has always given good results on blu-rays and even up-scaled DVDs.
I actually thought it looked great. Of course I wasn't inspecting it, watching from 2 feet away, so what do I know?

It's actually more like 60% off. You don't add the percentages.

When I went to the store the other day I got 50% off due to the 40% off + the 10% member discount. Now adding the 25% off coupon how does that only add 10% off?

The discounts are not all applied to the starting price.

40% is deducted first. Member discount (10%) is then applied to the remaining 60% and then whatever coupon you have is applied whatever is left.

So a $100 list price would get around sixty bucks knocked off, not seventy-five.

I just noticed that the cover photos for Design for Living say 1931 on them. I haven't yet purchased the movie, but was curious if there really is a mistake on the cover, as it should say 1933? Not a big deal, I'd buy the film no matter what, but just curious.

I think I made my cashiers day today with an $8 coupon and 30% off... used the 30% on Salo and the $8 on Winnie the Pooh... He was very confused by my movie choices...
