Don't have a pic handy, but I own For All Mankind, Bottle Rocket, Third Man, Man Who Fell to Earth, and The Last Emperor. Next one I get will probably be Che.

Any word on Brazil possibly making it out? It's the only Criterion DVD I still own. One of my favorite movies.

And why does anybody want them? Personally I prefer the paper cases. Makes the films look expensive and classy.

Well, Criterion has stopped using them, so a) either people want their collection to look uniform, or b) people like the durability of plastic over cardboard.

Recently, in discussing The Third Man's OOP status, someone said that a few movies were on the way out. I thought it was The Seventh Seal and The 400 Blows. Can anyone further confirm this? Even if just a rumor, I still went to Amazon that day and ordered both. I received The Seventh Seal, but here is a message I received a few days ago regarding The 400 Blows:

Hello from Amazon.com.

We're still trying to obtain the following item[s] you ordered on December 08 2009.

Jean-Pierre Laud, et al "The 400 Blows [Blu-ray]"

Still want it? We'll keep on trying. To keep your order for this item open, please click the link below. Otherwise, we'll cancel your order on January 18 2010, if we haven't located it by then.

I'm sure they have these in stores, but damn if Amazon can't get their copies in, then how possible is this rumor to become reality? Sorry, not trying to throw shit on the wall. I'd really just like to know if I should get my butt in gear and buy elsewhere?

well you can still get 400 Blows off the Criterion site, so it doesn't look like it's officially OOP yet, but I just ordered one from an amazon seller just to be safe.

might have something to do with the new cases. They did the same thing with Third Man I believe.

Complete!

I now have all the currently available Criterion Blu-rays. Now I may not always pick everyone up in the future, but I like everything so far.

Oh, by the way. Someone is getting rid of a huge load of Criterion Laserdiscs on eBay. I've bid on a lot of them (and I will probably regret letting everyone know), but there are a lot of good cheap discs over there now.

Merry Christmas everyone.

I'm wondering if they just ran out of stock. I bought a copy from Amazon earlier in the month and just got it two days ago.

Does anybody know why Criterion Blu-rays on Amazon are cheaper than their counterparts on DVD? One would think that it'd be other way around. Not that I'm complaining .

Ahh...you're the other person bidding on them then...hehe.... Let the best man win Hehe.... patiently waiting for the 10 seconds mark. J/k!

I'm actually looking toward the Criterion Beatles LD...I had it and I can't find it anywhere. And also Tokyo Olympiad. I have not seen anything cheaper than $90 (DVD) since it went OOP.

Supply and demand I would think. There are a lot of Criterion folks who have not jumped to Blu-ray yet nor do they want to upgrade from their current DVD version.

Also, where it's obvious that on a Blu-ray forum, Criterion fans are PQ/AQ and HD-driven, other forums they are more auteur driven. If you want more Godard, Tati, Truffaut, Bergman etc. you can either wait months or years for a Blu-ray release (if there will be a release) or get them on DVD while they are still available from Criterion.

I was chatting with one guy who said that he really wants the John Cassavetes and Eric Rohmer "Six Moral Tales" Criterion box set but he'll wait for it until its released on Blu-ray and my feeling is...does Criterion even plan to release those on Blu-ray with so many other titles that people are wanting other older titles let alone newer titles to be released. But yeah, go on theauters or even criterionforum and not many hardcore Criterion fans have made the jump to Blu-ray yet.

Just finished watching "Cleo from 5 to 7" by Agnes Varda from the Criterion "4 By Agnes Varda" DVD box set and I just hope that Criterion considers releasing this film or any of her films (or all) on Blu-ray. What an awesome film! Now I want Dreyer, Varda, Marker, Cassavetes, De Sica and Antonioni on Criterion Blu!
--
Last... I know there are other people who are just getting into Criterion BD's but also keep your eyes open to new and upcoming Blu-ray releases from Kino, the all-region from Eureka/Masters of Cinema Blu-ray releases and also Sony Pictures Classics.

Now you got me worried. I placed an order for the seventh seal on Dec 19 and it has not been shipped. I just put an order for the 400 blows in case as well. For 17 dollars its money well spent either way

Default Gimme Shelter

I just upgraded my Gimme Shelter DVD to Blu-ray. It's fantastic as expected but I'm wondering why it's not full screen. I got those darn black bars. Am I doing something wrong or is that what you get with aspect ratio 1:33:1?

yes that's what you get, it's to ensure that it's original aspect ratio...

Yes, basically you're wondering why the film that was shot in a 1.33:1, or 4x3, aspect ratio does not fill up your widescreen tv, which is probably 1.77:1, or 16x9. I know you understand what I'm saying, but I'm just restating the simple mathematics of it all.

It's the same reason why people would get black bars on their old "square" tube tvs when watching a movie that's in the aspect ratio of 1.75:1, but now that same aspect ratio will fill up the entire screen of your widescreen tv.

As long as the film's original aspect ratio is preserved, it's all good.
