I always preferred Pete to Woody, and Phil to Bob. Bob's a poseur, and his songs are overrated.
Bob's a poseur?? Says the Monkees fan.

Unlike Bob, the Monkees knew they were poseurs and poked fun at it, as well as tried to break out of that image. Also, Mike and Peter could actually play their instruments, but weren't allowed.

Honest question, but have you watched Head, or listened to any other Monkees songs besides I'm a Believer, Hey Hey We're the Monkees, and/or Daydream Believer?

Also, have you actually sat down and heard anything by Phil Ochs, or read up on him? He did a heck of a lot more than Bob Dylan ever did.

Sort of back-fired a bit on them a bit, though, as people assumed there'd be no Criterion edition and opted for the region-free Artificial Eye edition in the interim.
And some of them are still going to buy the Criterion edition, because they have to everything with the big C on it, regardless as to whether or not the Criterion edition is any sort of improvement.

Perhaps this will help:

Micky was an interesting lyricist wasn't he?

Good for Criterion though. People give them too much crap for stupid reasons.
The evil hipsters are taking over. You obviously don't live in a big city. You can't walk 5 steps without running into like 30 of them.

I have a lot of friends who are supposedly hipsters, as they're all vegan-living, NDP voting, indie music fans. I think the whole hipster thing is just a term that's bandied about much like hippie and beatnick were back in the 1950s and 1960s.

I have no opinion on Phil Ochs, but the f'n Monkees? Really? You can't go on saying Bob Dylan was poseur then go an defend the Monkees. You can call Bob Dylan a poseur or whatever but the matter fact is he made great music with meaningful song lyrics.

Phil Ochs will always be a mainstay in my heart...but I haven't listened to him in years. Pete Seeger is practically a neighbor and I bumped into him at our local healthfood store this past week. He's a really nice guy and looks great for someone going on 92 years old. It's still hard to believe that he was just as political and counterculture as Phil Ochs.

The thing I hate about hipster's the most is that now I can't do anything. Can't ride a bike or buy records or listen to Beirut. I can't even wear a scarf when its cold! Damn hipster's took everything.

Yes on all counts...I was/am a huge Monkees fan and believe it or not my own favorite Monkees song is a lesser known hit called "The Girl That I Knew Somewhere"...

Phil Ochs, Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie did quite a bit more than Bob Dylan. Seeger was a "regular" music guest on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour and supported their political views.

I'm definitely double dipping. The AE version is good but practically bare bones (it's lone extra is in crappy dvd quality 480p). The Criterion version should be the definitive version.

I am envious of you. From what I read, Pete is still as politically active as he was back 70 years ago. It's going to be a sad day when he passes.

My favourite is The Door into Summer. I agree with you about Phil, Pete, and Woody, Bob Dylan may have written a few good songs, but compared to them, he's nothing special.

You really need to check out Phil Ochs, Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, The Chad Mitchell Trio, Joan Baez, Tim Buckley, Cat Stevens, Tim Hardin, and Harry Belafonte. Bob's not that great in comparison.

Also, I know the Monkees had schlocky garbage, however, people still write them off all too readily. They weren't the only ones using session musicians, they were the only ones upfront about it.

Yet, according to some people, it's not enough. I'm interested in watching it, only because of the Tiny Furniture haters (I still need to watch that one as well actually), which is actually a really bad reason. I'm going to have to do a Certified Copy/Tiny Furniture double feature.

In summer of 2010, the community was completely closed off as all the bridges and roads washed out during a storm. I haven't been there myself, I just have heard that the roads are pitiful there.
I went on a trip out to Meat Cove this past summer without having heard of its reputation. I noticed while there that many of the locals seemed to have the same last name, which was pretty funny once I told some native Nova Scotians where I had been.

The backlash does get a little overwrought. What kid didn't go through a 'too cool for everything' phase?

And ironically enough a lot of that backlash is driven by people who are too cool to be too cool for everything.

It's a lot less squickier than saying you went to White Rock, Nova Scotia though. I heard about Meat Cove way back in junior high from a classmate who had moved from Glace Bay to my small community. He pretty much said that it was Deliverance.

Going slightly OT...I was able to pick up a classic boxset that had dropped to a very decent price.

B & N had a "The Godfather" Coppola Restoration (the 4 disc) blu listing at $57.99 with a 40% discount sticker on the box. Factor in my 10% members discount and a Valentine's Day 20% coup...the price including tax was $27. I couldn't pass that up...the last time I saw it that close was a Black Friday sale online for $30 sans tax.

The only other hook today was the "Apocalypse Now" Ultimate (3 disc) for about the same price, but disc-wise The Godfather was a better deal and the Apocalypse Now can be had on Amazon at a slightly better price...but the weekend is young!

You're a hipster apparently, because you said the word "ironically."

And you're right, the whole anti-hipsters crowd have become the new hipsters.
It's all the same old countercultural movement. The hipsters are the same as the flappers of the 1920s, or the beatnicks of the 1950s. History of subcultures is a little bit of a pet interest of mine.
