As I would describe any movie with Jean Gabin in it

I'm too lazy to do it but that might be a pretty useful running list, actually.

It's been said before but I'll say it again; The UK version of "Picnic at Hanging Rock" is a masterpiece. I really don't see where a Criterion release could be a major improvement, so unless you just have to have that wacky C on the spine and are willing to wait - go for the UK version. You won't be disappointed.

Any chance Amazon will have a sale in April like last year?

Oh that's right...I forgot about that. Problem solved...will order shortly!

Thanks TJS!

EDIT: OK...a followup question. Would Studio Canal release it in the US? I would assume "yes"...

I have never seen this film, but have heard nothing but great things about it. I just wonder if Studio Canal will release it in the US or does it pay to buy the UK version?

It's already on, as there are several titles in the 23 dollar range right now.

I wouldn't write off a Criterion version

Both the UK and France versions appear to be region locked. That was NOT the case on the other "Studio Canal Collection" discs that came to the U.S through their deal with Lionsgate.

Maybe they gave up on bringing this collection to the U.S.? Considering how great this transfer is I would have loved a U.S. release - but the fact it's region B locked might mean something.

I mean as far as if they were bringing it to the U.S. as part of the "studio canal" collection. The fact it's regioin locked tells me they gave up on this collection and bringing to the U.S. (that, plus the fact that they haven't released anything in the U.S. for like a year?).

It's possible Canal will just "sit on it", and not license it back to Criterion. But I'm hopeful the region B lock means someone is going to get a region A license in the not too distant future.

I've got a region free player, so I've got no problem with buying the UK version...but as you said, the fact that it is region B locked, might mean that Studio Canal will eventually release it in the US...the question is when? Is there any information you can offer us Pro-B?

Anyone here planning to buy the UK version?

I am a bit on the biase side when it come's to Jean Gabin. I do not know if Studio Canal will bother releasing it here in North America, I think it's been some months since one of their releases as been available here. If you can find the UK release at a good price maybe go that

Inflation's gone up. 23 bucks isn't really that expensive for Criterions, because you could be paying 41.49 for them in Canada.

Bloody hell, Amazon only has the DVDs for the June releases up for pre-order. Freaking lame.

I have some DVD sets of Jean Gabin, I am not sure if they were available outside of Quebec since the entire boxes have only French writing on them? I also have the DVD of La Grande Illusion from Criterion. It's not my favorite movie from Gabin per say but the review of that UK release does seem very nice so I might just bite. The main trouble right now is that there are quite a few other things I would want before that one.

US site, Canadian site doesn't even have them yet, as usual.

Why is June so hard to get Criterions?
