Apparently customers can just email a photo of damaged cases to get a replacement, but no GC will be sent if you go this route.
Either way I see it, it's $10 they didn't have to give out, so pretty cool on the part of Criterion. Though, couldn't one just ask for a replacement one by one (maybe wait a few days in between) if they really wanted to try to get $10 for each?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining! It's just that I'd probably spend $10 to ship all my cover art from Canada to Criterion's office, so if it's $10 for all damaged titles I'd be better off just emailing the pic.

Criterion's customer service is second to none!

I dunno about multiple coupons per, but I'd maybe wager they might limit it per address. Not giving one in the case of photos just makes sense because then the same image might be used multiple times by multiple people just to get free money.

Well, you have a point, so I would e-mail them about it. I just think the $10 was to repay you for the shipping costs anyways, as usually they just give you a replacement case through the mail at no cost (and no gift card) without having to send anything to them.

(1981) Blow Out
(1983) Scarface
(1984) Body Double
(1987) The Untouchables
(1993) Carlito's Way
(1996) Mission: Impossible
(2002) Femme Fatale

I believe his best streak was:

(1980) Dressed to Kill
(1981) Blow Out
(1983) Scarface
(1984) Body Double

All 4 of those films were created in that order with nothing between them. Body Double and Dressed to Kill sometimes feel like upper-tier b-movies, but I enjoy them immensely. Body Double in particular is better than it's rating on IMDB suggests. Though it's not a part of that streak, Femme Fatale is also better than its' IMDB rating suggests. A lot of people have a hard time understanding what's going on throughout the movie, so they rate it low, but I didn't have trouble keeping up.

NOTE: You can get De Palma's 1968 schlock film Murder a la Mod as a bonus on the CC of Blow Out.

You don't like Phantom of the Paradise!?!?

Any other thoughts? I was also thinking of some South American directors.

Thanks!
Did someone say South American directors?

Glauber Rocha
Jorge Sanjinés
Joaqu1m Pedro de Andrade (had to put "1" where an "i" goes, otherwise it bleeps it out for some reason)
Rogério Sganzerla
Fernando E. Solanas
Júlio Bressane
José Mojica Marins
Hugo Santiago
and more where that came from

Also, can you keep a secret? Fassbinder is my favorite filmmaker. Have to keep my pro-Godard flag waving on here, so don't tell no one.

I tried to watch Casualties of War several weeks ago, just couldn't get into it... maybe next time.

Otherwise in general I agree with most of what's been said, except that:

Obsession is also quite good.

Thank you for this! What about any Latin American directors? I forgot to add that in my original post

Isn't South America pretty much part of "Latin America", unless you mean name some Mexican/Cuban filmmakers too (my previous list had Brazilian, Bolivian, and Argentine filmmakers)?

If so, add these to the list:

Mexico:
Fernando de Fuentes
Emilio Fernández
Cuba:
Tomás Gutiérrez Alea
Santiago Álvarez

I was just thinking about this film and how it would be a great addition to the Criterion Collection.

I think Criterion could use some more cult film goodness in their lineup.

I think it's vice-versa, at least from what I've been told, but you nailed exactly what I wanted!

Come now...Hi, Mom! is at least as good as Body Double. Or, alternately, Body Double is at least as goofy and schlocky as Hi, Mom!

Whichever way you want to look at it. haha

Definitely! Have you seen the plea for its consideration at CriterionCast? There's a great Three Reasons video and cover design! I would buy it!

I'm sorry i missed all the Ghibli talk!

As far as i know Grave of the Fireflies is not included in the Disney deal. The Disney deal is between Disney and Tokuma publishing, and Tokuma doesn't hold the rights to Grave.

I believe the only thing currently in print for Grave in the US is an extra-less DVD.

So, SpiderBaby and zui already listed some Brazilian and Argentinian directors, might as well complete the trifecta with some Mexican ones :

Fernando de Fuentes - Revolutionary Trilogy, especially Vamonos con Pancho Villa (1936) which is, in my opinion, one of the best Mexican films of all time. Look at my signature .

Emilio "El Indio" Fernandez - Maria Candelaria (1944) (One of the first "Palme d'Or" winners), Maclovia (1948) (Widely unseen and difficult to find but well worth it), Pueblerina (1949), Salon Mexico (1949), La Perla (1947).

Juan Bustillo Oro - Mexico de mis Recuerdos (1943), Ahi esta el Detalle (1940) and as I recommended a few pages back, Cuando los Hijos se Van (1941).

Miguel M. Delgado - Most of his Cantinflas films (Think Charlie Chaplin but funnier), especially El Analfabeto (1960), El Supersabio (1948), El Padrecito (1964).

Ismael Rodriguez Ruelas - Dos Tipos de Cuidado (1953), hands down, one of the most important and influential films of Mexico.

Roberto Gavaldon - I tend to call him (After reading a book analizing his films) our "Ruralist filmmaker". His most important work is Macario (1960) (Just to compare, think the Mexican Seventh Seal), La Escondida (1956), El Niņo y la Niebla (1953), Las Tres Perfectas Casadas (1953).

Jorge Fons - Los Albaņiles (1976), great film that takes a really particular turn.

Arturo Ripstein - El Imperio de la Fortuna (1986), La Perdicion de los Hombres (2000), La Viuda Negra (1977), El Castillo de la Pureza (1973).

Jaime Humberto Hermosillo - Intimidades de un Cuarto de Baņo (1989), La Tarea (1990), Doņa Herlinda y su Hijo (1984).

Well, big list .

Umberto D. is now available for preorder at Amazon.com. (The other titles from Criterion's September slate are not yet available.)
