Might be some weird reasons on money as to why it's not so practical for Criterion?

Criterion would certainly be nice, but the current DVD release is so bad that it's distracting. And I'm not all that sensitive to vid quality issues. A bd release by anyone who put even a little effort into it would be fine by me.

And re: animation, I'm surprised, too, that Criterion doesn't have at least a few releases. I wonder if work like that of the Brothers Quay and some of the Eastern European and Russian animation wouldn't be obtainable. And it would certainly get the work out more, like Crit's forays into experimental cinema. I have often come across great, creative animation that is hidden away on DVDs in cardboard cases.

Amazon is using Newbury Comics to sell it. Only paid 23$ for it. That's fair I'd say.

The fact is there aren't a whole lot of classic, feature-length animated films that aren't controlled by major studios. Japanese studios tend to self-release (and charge a premium for) their releases, and in the West there's Disney, Dreamworks, Pixar.

Whenever this "issue" is raised, the obvious question is "what animated films should Criterion release?", and the answers fall off after you get past the 3 or 4 most likely candidates (Grave of the Fireflies, La Planete Sauvage, The Adventures of Prince Achmed, Wizards).

What surprises me, though, is that Criterion have never done some sort of set or compilation of animated shorts like they've done with their experimental releases (Brakhage, Painleve, Frampton).

I'm really no student of the diverse world of animated film, but I'd love to see a disc of Pilot Studio Moscow shorts from the late 80s/early 90s or some Lotte Reiniger. And I've seen so many other obscure animated shorts over the years that are really mindblowing but don't necessarily constitute an oeuvre for a particular director/studio, or belong to a definable "movement", that if ever released end up buried on animated shorts compilations with silly rubbish.
Waltz With Bashir would be a great Criterion release.

After the overwhelmingly positive response towards The Music Room, I decided to get it a few days ago. Just saw my first Ray film and I can wrap it up with a single word: Extraordinary. I was really REALLY blown-away with it. The story feels very local, personal and representative of a culture but the long series of universal themes carried along the film are what I sincerely loved. The music is beautiful, the musicians and dancers are given quite a big part of the film and I am glad Ray did that. To have long scenes where you can simply appreciate a different but complementary art to that of cinema is incredible. All of these aspects are great but the cinematography takes the cake. The camera movement is elegant and follows the events in an almost perfect way. It reminded me of Kiarostami's style. It isn't static like an Ozu but isn't moving all that much either. Thanks to all of those who recommended it, now the wait for Pather Panchali and the rest of the Apu Trilogy is going to be HARD .

One of my favorite Criterion release. This film still sticks in my mind many months after I watched it.

You don't think Danny Boyle has a unique visual style? I find it easily recognizable. Same with the other directors you listed.

Red Rock West is a film that would be a terrific Criterion candidate.

Criterion released Akira back in the day (on laserdisc), so they have done animation. It is not their forte, though. Throughout the Akira supplements, they referred to "magna" rather than manga. It was otherwise a strong release, with the entire first issue of the comic book included on the disc.

Any word yet on a start date for the B1G1 B&N Criterion sale? They usually have one in July and one in November.

Has anybody seen Silver Lode? It's a terrific 50's western (clocking in at 75 minutes) with sublime storytelling and performances, set pieces and one of the most convincing of the anti McCarthy westerns (the villain is actually named McCarty). I wish criterion would release more westerns.

Anyone know the size of the Samurai Trilogy blu-ray case in relation to Criterion's usual jewel cases? Was planning on using an extra one with a custom cover to replace that stupid case Benjamin Button comes in.

"No Shows" just means they canceled your order right? Not that they charged you, it shipped, and you didn't get it or your money back right?

I was also looking into this. I have a high quality image of the Benjamin Button Blu-ray cover on my computer, I just have to resize it to fit the dimensions of a Criterion Blu-ray cover. It shouldn't take too long. I will post the result when I'm done.

Have you seen 127 Hours? You should definitely see his unique visuals on display. For example there is multiple scenes where he splits the screen in two or more pieces and puts a different images in them. Truly genius. There are not many directors who can pull it off as seamlessly as Danny Boyle.
