I've been on the fence about that DVD for a few months. I've only seen a really bad quality stream, but I really liked the film and want it in my collection. I'd hate to buy it for $20 only to have an upgrade come out. Then I'd have to think about spending another $30 on the HD version. So, I think I'll wait until at least the end of the year. There are a lot of other films to get to in the meantime. What are the chances it would even get upgraded to Blu soon though?

Nowadays, I prefer to be surprised and hope for the best. In fact, I think I just got to understand why I have been somewhat underwhelmed the whole year with them. Last year, every month came with a title that made me excited but the rest of them sounded really interesting too and I blind-bought several. This year I felt different. There is the usual "significantly interesting title" for me but the rest of them don't interest me. Don't know why this is happening to be honest .
Rosemary's Baby would be fantastic. The DVD wasn't anything to write home about, and a nice new HD transfer from Criterion would remedy that.

If it looks as good as Cul-de-Sac and Repulsion I'll be a happy camper.

Rosemary's Baby is one of my all-time favs so a Criterion upgrade of that would certainly be a treat.

Plowed through every extra on the 12 Angry men disk yesterday, and for me the two hour long teleplays were the highlight, this is more of the stuff we need, not mumblemumble film academics. While the 12 Angry Men teleplay was in itself decent, what really amazed me and changed my mind about what I thought were its moments of awkwardness was that the drama was broadcast live, meaning that the actors and camera movements (and some fairly elaborate moves, there were, with multiple cameras) for the entire play were being done in one take (with some leeway for ad breaks). At each given moment, a selected camera's footage was being fed to broadcast. The planning for this one must have been insanely elaborate.

Lumet's teleplay Tragedy in A Temporary Town is about bigoted attitudes and witch hunts in a remote American town. Lloyd Bridges' "Oh you animals of the mob!" performance is a little too overwrought for me, but a nice watch and very relevant in theme to the main film.

Just watched Zazie dans la Metro for the first time today and I absolutely loved it. Are there many fans of the movie here? I never see it mentioned when people recommend Criterion titles. Also watched Belle de Jour which I also liked a lot.

So i finally gave in to Spidey's recommendations and ordered Despair from DeepDiscount. I was actually getting pretty excited about it. Then my package came from DeepDiscount and i opened it to find...

A copy of "Bee Movie".

Sigh...

I enjoy Zazie dans le Metro, especially the scene on the Eiffel Tower. The young female actress gives a spirited performance imo.

The other film you mentioned is an absolute classic and cornerstone of my Criterion blu-ray collection.

Maybe a sign of The Spirit of the Beehive getting an upgrade soon?

My despair has been replaced with impatience.

If you liked these you should pick up the DVD set of The Golden Age of Television, which has 8 classic teleplay broadcasts from the same era.

Whenever you get the Fassbinder, hope you enjoy it. His first English language film, and most say very odd film. One of my favorite Fassbinder films (also get The Third Generation dvd if you haven't), Dirk Bogarde is awesome.

Speaking for me there are a few movies that because of a certain way of ending, while being good movies I just can't see anymore.

Some example

The Sting

Seven

While the "surprise factor" is a bit different in Shallow Grave it is still hard for me to watch it again. It's a strange thing because afterall I know the endings of tons of movies but it seem those "surprise" ending are difficult for me. Even Citizen Kane I haven't seen in what must be a decade now

I understand where you are coming from, but for me "What's in the Box?" never gets old.
