It would be nice if they found the highway where the longer version was buried and then restored it.

I'm running to B&N and was trying to decide between the Thin Red Line, Battle of Algiers, and Antichrist. What would you pick?

Studio Canal own the rights and took the licence to distribute away from Criterion as they wanted to distribute their own inferior version instead. So several Canal owned titles previously available on Criterion as dvds wont be seeing the light of day for some time if at all. Though never say never.

Still...I would miss Lynch discussing his creative process in taking a conventionally plotted failed TV pilot and spinning it into such a landmark achievement in free-associative cinematic storytelling.
If this is all to come to pass, then hopefully yes there's a new extensive Lynch interview; we know there won't be a commentary, but yes him talking about the process, and remembrances/etc. would be welcome. Same from the cast, too. It probably wouldn't replicate (m)any of the extras on the Studio Canal disk either, which would be welcome for me.

We also know he likes to approve transfers so it would be gold on that end.

A dream extra would be the failed pilot. I know he doesn't want it to be seen really - the shoddy version that's been bootlegged around is not his original pilot, and he's made mention that he certainly doesn't like that leak. But even in watching it there's a fascination in seeing what was left out, kept in, and changed that provides a unique glimpse into Lynch's creative process and that informs the finished film itself.

Get the German David Lynch box set (Lost Highway/Mulholland Drive/Knland Empire) It's selling for 23.5 euros + shipping on Amazon.de. It'll hold you over until the American release that is if Inland Empire ever gets a Blu ray release.

And more 'cooking shows'! David preparing quinoa in the 2-disc set for Inland Empire was one of the funniest yet weirdly informative featurettes I've ever seen.

Mulholland Drive needs a state-of-the-art scan with improved workflow. All of the HD versions I've seen seem to have issues (for a couple of the Region B releases admittedly only seen via clips and screen captures). But I think a definitive, Lynch-approved transfer would make this one of Criterion's finest and most profitable releases in their catalogue history, thus worth any extra time and expense.

Of course, there's probably such a pent-up domestic demand for this Blu-ray that almost anything they did would fly into shopping carts day one.

It's my "dream" to live long enough to see that pilot in its entirety, just as it unspooled for ABC execs, properly presented, with some kind of informed commentary track (assuming Lynch is unwilling to do it himself). What was so astonishing about the finished film was how merely changing the context made such a huge difference in the way everything played. It's a brilliant reimagining. I've never seen a cinematic stunt quite like it.

This is extremely unlikely but Double Indemnity just popped into my head
[Show spoiler](more accurately back into my head - we were yakking about this a couple weeks ago)
for a Monday announcement.

It's on the leaked Universal rollout doc that's been floating around for several months with a Sept 4th release date and while that document has been very accurate there have been exceptions and there's still been no word from Universal.

MoC just released it so there's obviously a tranfer ready and there's no reason to not release it release it domestically during their 100th unless somebody else is going to release it domestically.

I have to say, in the unli...extremely unlikely even this comes to pass I would have mixed emotions.

There's already a (region B, locked) edition available.

There's really no reason Universal can't release it themselves. Sure, Criterion would do a better job but a Universal release would probably be more than acceptable.

OTOH, it's Double Freaking Indemnity.

As much as I roll my eyes at some of the requests for stuff that's already available or could easily be direct releases I'd be pretty tickled by this.

Not that it's gonna happen, of course.

Yeah, I doubt it too. In fact, I haven't entirely given up on the 9/4 Universal release. I was more rambling about how I'm willing to relax my standards when an unnecessary or redundant releases cuts my way.

Speaking of redundant releases, while I'd certainly buy The Lady Eve (though granted, that doesn't say a lot), if they're going to get some Stanwyck out of Paramount I'd love to see a quality release of The Strange Love of Martha Ivers. Assuming Paramount has decent source materials that could be a good whacky C candidate and the Film Chest release doesn't sound too impressive.

I would definitely go with Thin Red Line if you could only choose one title. Battle of Algiers is not for everyone, and neither is Antichrist with it's intense subject matter.

The Thin Red Line looks fantastic and sounds fantastic and is just an all around fantastic film. Definitely one of the best Criterion blu-rays to date IMO.

I have to agree, but one can say that The Thin Red Line is not for everyone, but definitely for me. I'm a big Malick fan. I did just watch Battle of Algiers last week and thought it was a really great movie, one that will be added to my collection by the end of the year. I've seen Antichrist and have no interest in watching it again, just not worth it to me. I guess you can say all three are unique in their own ways, so it's a very tough call on a blind buy situation not knowing one's personal tastes..

Man, choosing only one or two off that list is difficult. I can eliminate some immediately.

I highlighted what I think are the best of your list, but I have not seen Hollis Frampton, The Lady Vanishes, or Shallow Grave (I own TLV just have not watched it yet). As you can probably tell, I am a huge fan of Japanese / Asian cinema. I like Robinson Crusoe on Mars, The Gold Rush, and Island of Lost Souls, too, but there are better choices if you are limited.

I'd suggest one or more of the big hitter box sets in a 50% off sale, such as The Samurai Trilogy or The BBS Story.

Having said that, I think the Eclipse sets you list would be my choices. Honestly, some of the best films in the Collection are in the Eclipse sets, and the ones you list are among the best. Most of these Eclipse films could easily be mainline releases and it disappoints me that Criterion may never upgrade them to blu-ray. At 50% off, now is the time to grab a few.
