My favourite Gabin film and one of my favourite films. Incredibly cool film about an ageing gangster.
My Criterion DVD looks fine, but I'd probably upgrade it if I could
No I haven't...but thanks for the suggestion. I'll check it out sometime in the future. Wish I could stream some of these on Netflix...might have to consider the Hulu trial.

Seems like some really cool people worked in their unique sense of Japanese culture into the film, also great for Japanese anime/film buffs in general.
I love Hausu. I've watched it about four or five times now. Hard to believe a 13-year old girl wrote the script.

Guilty! I will get that. Never was interested in the early Beatles movies like Hard Days Night or Help but I got Sgt Pepper's and I would get Let It Be also. I always was more of a Beatles fan post Sgt. Pepper's then pre Sgt. Pepper's

Probably. It's a nice companion piece to HEAD (which I prefer film-wise, not musically) for a psychedelic double feature.

I'd prefer LET IT BE, though, if only for the rooftop concert and outtakes to balance out the depressing bulk of it. (it's companion for a "band getting a divorce" double feature: Wilco's I AM TRYING TO BREAK YOUR HEART).

I finally watched MoC's Double Indemnity last night and about twenty minutes in I started really hoping this finds its way to New York.

Don't get me wrong, it's a great transfer and well worth importing (it is region B locked though). The extras are a little light and recycled from previous dvd releases but are still pretty good.

But there is definitely room for improvement and the areas that could use work are right up their alley. Overall Universal did a pretty good job but there's still some occasional minor damage and in some of the darker scenes (most notably when Fred MacMurray is dictating the voiceover) there's some very noticable light fluctuation. It's really not bad (and again, it shouldn't keep anybody from importing) but it's the kind of thing CC is pretty good at minimizing. It's also the kind of thing Universal is still a bit trigger-happy about addressing. If given the choice between leaving it alone and over-fixing it I'd leave it alone.

And since Universal doesn't appear to be releasing this in the US anytime soon it might be in play.

And to anybody whose reactions are along the lines of 'eh, it's already available in the UK and there's no reason Universal can't do their own US release, Criterion's time would be better spent elsewhere' all I can is: no argument here on any count.

I finally ordered this title from MoC yesterday. I was holding out for the inevitable domestic release, but figured it would certainly only best the MoC in the extras...and that it was finally time to order one of my all-time favorites on blu. I'm definitely looking forward to watching it.

I don't see Criterion getting a hold of this title at all, but I'd be elated if it did happen. I do expect Universal to release it here at some point though.

I don't think it's at all likely either. But the longer we go without hearing about a US release from Universal the more I'm reminded of Rosemary's Baby.

There was no way Paramount was going to let it go; Paramount could do a perfectly fine job on their own, just look at Chinatown; hmmm, why haven't they announced it as part of their anniversary yet; newsletter clue.

So if a pair of crutches shows up in a newsletter both of us will be elated but one of us won't be totally shocked.

You're right there, man.

And good call on Rosemary's, that was a huge studio get. And Double Indemnity is getting just a DVD release from Uni, there hasn't even been a rumor of a...damn, I will not tempt myself with such thoughts at this time.

It's one of my absolute favorites. I have the Blu, the shirt and, after a screening of the film a year or two ago at the High Museum in Atlanta, my buddy and I got Blanche tattooed on us. So yeah, definitely a fan. Haha.

I would've thought Universal would include Double Indemnity in their big box for the 100th Celebration but they did not.

I hope they eventually plan to release it. If not, then they should hand it off to Criterion. The ultimate extra would be the gas chamber ending but I suppose that footage doesn't even exist? (At least that's what I recall from the Crowe/Wilder book).

Movie number 3 from the Alexander Korda set is now completed

Rembrant (1936)

So far out of three movies seen in this set, I would say it's the second best. Charles Laughton as Rembrandt is nothing short of amazing. I would say he is a sort of classic Robert Deniro where he transform himself into the character that he is suppose to play. The movie goes from when Rembrant is already a succesful painter to him slowly losing his popularity because of his personality and actions. The final scene with Laughton now transform into an old Rembrant about to paint a self portrait is probably worth seeing just for that alone, the way Laughton play's it is quite incredible. Quality of the DVD is again good, not amazing but very adequate considering the source. I classify this one as high recommended

I just finished watching Summer Interlude and Summer with Monika. Loved both, but was especially stricken by Summer with Monika:

The leads are brash, violent, unlikeable, cowardly, dumb, ill-prepared.....you know, like real people. I couldn't say I would like to converse with the couple, but I'd definitely like to observe the trainwreck from a safe distance (what this Gil provides). As it plays out it feels more and more like a black comedy and I found myself I drawn by the rough edges of this film, exhilarated by the unpredictability and unsettling situations. There are certain moments I could almost smell. It is of stark contrast to Summer Interlude which was gorgeous, slow, lyrical and at all times beautiful to look at. It's as if Bergman wanted to burn that film down in favor of expressing how he really felt about love, relationships and fate. (kind of like that Spider in Through a Glass Darkly)

Definitely one of Bergman's more important works & I could see why he was so proud of it. Sometimes an artists best work is his most atypical.
