It seems like sometimes they go with the translation, as they have here, and others with the original language. I was surprised Children of Paradise wasn't Les Enfants du Paradis as that's what it is often known as in the UK (and so what I'm familiar with), but then others like Au Revoir Les Enfants or La Promesse retail the original title. Not sure how this is decided...

Is Children of Paradise really as bad a Blu-Ray as the review indicates? I was planning on getting a copy.

I have only seen some of them, but maybe this still helps you a bit.

1. Howard's End - Haven't seen it so can't really say anything about the film, but the disc is rumored to go out of print, so maybe you should just get it as a blindbuy.
2. Mystery Train - Amazing. Typical Jarmusch. Great characters, brillant dialogue, moody soundtrack and also a script with multiple plot lines.
3. Naked Kiss - Couldn't really get into it to be honest. But I'll have to rewatch it.
4. Night On Earth (DVD) - Brillant. Several fantastic actors (Benigni, Armin Mueller-Stahl, etc.) Funny as hell. Highly recommended. I hope it gets a BD-upgrade soon. - and yes, I do like Jarmusch's films...
5. Short Cuts (DVD) - I'm totally ashamed to say I haven't seen that one yet. Heard some pretty good things about it though.
6. Solaris - Fantastic! Had the chance to watch it in cinema this year. The new restored version, that was also released by Criterion. It looks absolutely fantastic. The film is an absolute masterpiece as well.
7. Summer With Monika - Haven't seen that one yet. But it's by Bergman, so I will definitely check it out sometime in the future.
8. Vanya On 42nd Street - Haven't seen that one either.

Edit: Also, how is Alambrista? - Unfortunately I haven't seen that one either...

I'd be interested in that as well. The latest title where I thought why not the original title? was Purple Noon/Plein Soleil.

edit: It may well be that there actually is no decision on the Criterion end of things. They may just go along with the title the US distributor/rights holder has decided upon in the first place. So the question would have to be directed to them.

My guess is that they go with the title it's previously been distributed under in the US. This may also prevent them from correcting erroneous translations (e.g The 400 Blows)

Looks like Polanski's Tess is coming.

Janus Films is distributing a Polanski approved restoration of the film, so we should probably see Criterion release it (late?) next year.

Thanks for the info!

Hopefully we'll hear more about it during the New Years picture hints

Completely OT...

Pick up of the day. Three Buster Keaton Laserdisc boxsets. "The Art of Buster Keaton" Volume 1 and Volume 2 plus "Buster Keaton: The M-G-M Talkies". Each boxset has 4 or 5 double-sided discs and the "M-G-M Talkies" has great cover art and a nice insert. Very good condition at a flea market for $5 each!

And yes...I actually own an old Pioneer Laserdisc player. I originally bought it a number of years ago, when I was collecting the old WB "Golden Age of Looney Tunes", M-G-M "Happy Harmonies", and the Tom and Jerry boxsets that came out at that time. Beautiful cover art and large booklets to boot. They are a big part of my animation collection on disc.

Tess is owned by Sony in the US, so who knows if Criterion will release it. I'd say its more likely Twilight Time, since they have a licensing deal with them.

Did you not read the link? The film is owned by French producer Pathe and Janus is now the North American distributor. Sony USED to hold the distribution rights but their dvd of Tess has been out of print for ages. The film forum is showing the new Pathe restoration that debuted at Cannes Classics earlier this year. Tess is an independent film. Eating Raoul, Hard Eight, Following are all recent examples of other independent films that were distributed by Sony but the rights have since lapsed and been picked up by other companies including Criterion.

What's the verdict on Heaven's Gate? That movie was panned when it came out and generally has the reputation of being a "flop" or failure. I plan to watch it sometime, but what should I expect?

I'm a big fan of The Deer Hunter, but I haven't seen any other Cimino films.

Not bad

Not necessarily a "sequel" to My Dinner With Andre, but does give you a glimpse at what Andre and Wally did for a living off-Broadway before they became household names.
(Wally Shawn in an intense Chekov drama?...Inconceivable!)

I am right with you on this one in being I still have to check it out. Yes it was a flop when it came out but some people tend to really enjoy it and I loved Cimino's Year of the Dragon which also flopped when it first came out.
