I don't think that's enough. Tarsem is aswell, but the difference is: Terrence Malicks are married to thought provoking ideas.

Tarsem is all show. Films like The Fall look beautiful but the screenplay and acting are well below average.

I rather enjoyed the little girl. She's no Jake Lloyd.

M is a good one, and was my first introduction to Lang. Now I can't get enough Lang on home video.

But of all Lang's films, great and small, the one that I consider his hands-down masterpiece is Die Nibelungen. This takes nothing away from Metropolis; I love Lang's futuristic machine-world classic that has become his best known gift to cinema. But Die Nibelungen takes silent film to an even more epic and powerful level that, thanks to Kino, I now have in my collection. It is lesser known than Metropolis, and perhaps forever damned to be tainted by its association with the Nazis, who "kidnapped" the film in later years and used it as a tool for propganda, much to Lang's horror.

Lang is just amazing; it is an incredible feat for a director to have so many groundbreaking influential films in his body of work.

Thanks! I just took a few minutes to compile my collection on here. Scary that I've only had a Blu-ray Player and HDTV for a week and half, considering the collection, but I got a head start on a great many of these through the whole "BD/DVD combo" thing and I foresaw the future somewhat. I also found several of these at a used store for crazy cheap when I traded in a bunch of DVDs that I wanted to upgrade.

Compiling my DVD collection right now, but it's going to take a while. I'll come back to this task tomorrow.

If you have not already done so, I would suggest checking out Still Walking. One of the best films in the collection. Any Ozu fan should love this one; heck, any movie fan period. It is a recent film that channels Ozu very effectively, yet stands tall in its own way as a subdued portrait of a modern Japanese family.

Phenomenal film. Here's hoping his film After-Life gets the attention it deserves, too.

All of the following are worth watching at least once or twice.

The essentials are bolded.

(1922) Dr. Mabuse: The Gambler
(1927) Metropolis
(1928) Spies
(1929) Woman in the Moon
(1931) M
(1933) The Testament of Dr. Mabuse
(1936) Fury
(1937) You Only Live Once
(1941) Man Hunt
(1943) Hangmen Also Die!
(1944) The Woman in the Window
(1945) Scarlet Street
(1953) The Big Heat

Anything absent from the list is something I have not seen, disliked or do not care to see.

I am looking forward to seeing Ministry of Fear in March.

Am I the only one who feels that the three months of 2013 releases already beats out most of the 2012 releases?

No, you're almost certainly not alone there. A lot of people probably feel that way.

I'm not one of those people but [this space available] knows there was plenty of grousing whenever 2012 slates were announced.

2013, in my opinion, has a lot of stronger releases and films that are praised by many. While 2012 did have it's share of great releases, quite a few of them were just average.

I'm waiting for Le Samourai, too. Santa might bring a region-free player, and if that happens, Le Samourai will be the first what could be a number of impatiently-awaited films. And Criterion will really have to wedge in the extras to get any more dollars out of this pocket.

But mostly wanted to say that The Leopard was my discovery of the year. Yeah, I knew everyone said it was great, but I didn't think they meant it was THAT great. There is a lot of beauty and wisdom in the film, and the last 1/3 is bravura film-making, not only Visconti's but also Burt Lancaster's. I started a list of good movies about old men on the Criterion web site, and The Leopard is right up there. (along with Friends of Eddie Coyle, which deserves blu-treatment, too).

I'm totally with you on Die Nibelungen; it's my favorite Lang, one of my favorite silents, and one of my favorite films, period. Maybe because it's almost five hours long, it draws you into its world so much that you come to participate in the stories rather than just watch them. This was the first film that showed me the potential in silent movie language. I'd recommend to anyone to fix a plate of snacks, light a few candles, and sit down to enjoy it. It has that kind of scale and ambition.

And it's from the director of Metropolis and M. Lang had incredible understanding and control of film language. The newest, most complete version of Metropolis (Kino) makes the movie the most engaging of any of the versions I've seen, which is quite a few over the years. And Criterion's M has great supplements and booklet. Lang was either far ahead of his time or better at expressing his understanding of film than others. He's certainly a pantheon director.

Okay, that took longer than I thought, but it was fun in an offbeat way.

A lot of Criterions in my DVD collection and they'll probably never all be upgraded to BD. I love revisiting these movies time and time again, though.

I agree that 2013 is looking to be one impressive year so far. Badlands and A Man Escaped will be joining my BD collection in March.

Well I myself have never seen Le Samourai before but I do know of the film and I too very much look forward to this definite blind buy in the hopeful near future. Also I have never seenThe Tin Drum before and the first time I was ever exposed to it was in an Encyclopedia of Horror Movies book I got as a kid. The image of the lead "child" with that look of terror and fear while beating his drum was stuck in my head for decades. I look forward to seeing this film.

[Show spoiler]where he buys the cake at the fair and the plot unfolds from there
. And Ray Milland is a legend.

If you're talking about importing the French release...don't. It's one of the worst transfers in the history of the format. You're much better off just buying the Criterion DVD if you don't have it, or waiting for the inevitable upgrade.
