The Harakiri blu-ray is my.. third favourite blu-ray from Criterion. Highly recommend that.

Edit: From checking your collection, you have the MoC Harakiri. Rad! Also, Branded to Kill is amazing.
Yes, Harakiri was a blind-buy for me. Blew my socks off. Amazing film.
It was competing in Cannes in 1963, but lost to The Leopard - talk about tough competition!
I got the Masters of Cinema edition because I didn't like the look of the high-contrast and picture-boxed Criterion edition.
I almost bought the Rebel Samurai box-set on DVD to get films like Samurai Rebellion, but it was pretty pricey and it's possible that some or all of those films would be upgraded.
I've never seen The Human Condition, but you can believe I will the second I get a chance.
I also know nothing about Kwaidan, but I wouldn't hesitate to get that if Criterion upgrade it.
Oh, and Branded to Kill is so nuts, but I love it. Joe Shishido's chubby face is so strange, funny and awesome!

I'm not sure what's going on with it. I ordered it during the BN sale because I couldn't find it in stores. After a month and a half of trying to get it in for me, BN.com cancelled my order.

I've been planning on grabbing it during the next Criterion flash sale.

Which is hopefully very soon.

That would be awesome. What would really get me excited is if Criterion could get their hands on Cronenberg's Spider and give it their bluray treatment. One of his best works...

Default A Cronenberg Set?

Look guys, I'm just getting over the fact that Scanners is coming to Criterion, but a potential set with Rabid, Shivers, The Brood and Scanners just gives me nerd wood. My gut tells me that set just isn't happening but I would love to be proven wrong. Wasn't Dead Ringers a CC at one point? I remember Crash was. Hell just release a mega set of his films. Id bite, but I think its a little unfair for others who just want a title or two. Thats why ive been reluctant to buy the BBS set which I really want. I still smile thinking of the fact that Head is a Criterion. Anyway, I've always loved Cronenberg for pushing me out of my comfort zone with his fixation with the "body horror" genre and to venture into the unkown and to show us the limits of human pain/pleasure, both physical and physiological.

Wow, what a great approach to the genre. It reminded me of Rosemary's Baby in the way the film lures you in slowly and as soon as you get comfortable the gates of hell are opened up. There were some great visuals that popped out that I was not expecting, notably,
[Show spoiler]the scene where the light switch is flipped and the apartment wall cracks open to reveal something insect like underneath.
Very creepy without going to the gross out factor so many contemporary films employ. The theme of cracks appearing throughout the film was excellent foreshadowing as well.

Very happy I picked this up.
One of my favorite performances is Catherine Deneuve in Repulsion. When Black Swan was released on blu-ray, I did a double feature with Repulsion and it worked well.

Eclipse 13: Kenji Mizoguchi's Fallen Women is among the best of all the Eclipse sets. Four fantastic films. Women of the Night is especially good, but Street of Shame is the highlight. It's a masterpiece, and that is not a term I use often. One of the best films in the entire Collection, and I scratch my head wondering why they did not release it as a blu-ray - it looks very good on DVD.

i can't wait until someone posts a review of pina, to see if its worth it to keep the all region german blu even though it has no subs
probably would just keep the german one, unless criterion used a new master, or it had better audio quality, since i can live without english subs, even though i don't know what they are saying when i watched it

thank you so much, but what I find weird is it looks like the criterion blu ray just has english audio according to dvd beaver which is weird since the movie was filmed in german

i think it looks the same and it appears the german deluxe version has more extras then the criterion one does also . the only different extras is a video of a 2011 press conference + the deluxe edition has a nice cardboard outer box + art cards and poster and a nice digipack full color artwork case. all the deleted scenes are the same + plus the making of. It has an interview with wim wenders on it but it appears the interview is only 11 min long where the one on the criterion is 22 min so i have no idea if it is the same interview or not
the booklet appears to be different as well, but i can't tell since it's all in german and i can't read or speak it :P

That review is for the original 2012 release. Criterion's release is scheduled for the 23rd of this month. The main difference between the 2012 release and this release is the fact that it's a) Criterion and b) at least has one major extra, a commentary track by Wim Wenders. L

Here's the breakdown of what's included:

Quote:
DIRECTOR-APPROVED SPECIAL EDITION:
  • High-definition digital master, approved by director Wim Wenders, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack presented on the two-disc Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D special edition
  • Audio commentary featuring Wenders
  • The Making of “Pina”
  • Deleted scenes, with commentary by Wenders
  • Behind-the-scenes footage
  • Interview with Wenders
  • Trailer
  • PLUS: A booklet featuring an essay by novelist and essayist Siri Hustvedt; reprinted pieces by Wenders and Pina Bausch; a guide to the dances featured in the film; and portraits of the dancers
In Canada, the release was quite solid, but no commentary was a deal killer for me when I can just snag it off of netflix.

OY, I spoke out of my rump regarding that DVD beaver review. My apologies, it is about the criterion film. I do not believe they dubbed it into English, though. I believe it is far more likely that they made a mistake.

Man how I wish the Canadian release included the commentary

Just watched Pina on Netflix. Wow.

Either you'll love it or hate it. If you don't like modern dance, I'd recommend going in with an open mind. I think I'm glad I didn't cancel the preorder. I want to watch this with my daughters. Some of the dances really resonated. There are a few that I felt ambivalent about, but so many that were simply fantastic.

Also, I think There's a bit of an issue with mobility, as some of these degrees are highly sought after in other locations, but graduates may not want or have the finances to move to make their degree useful. Of course, that depends on the person as well. Not everyone who gets an English lit degree is going to sit on their duff waiting for someone to hand them a job.
I also think a lot of issues stem from primary and secondary education, as many schools are underfunded, overcrowded, and have many teachers that aren't actually teaching subjects they studied. When I was in high school 10 years ago, We had to take stuff like fine arts and other BS classes, as mandated by the province, in order to graduate. Thrun also focused more on kids "expressing themselves" in English, rather than teaching them how to write properly. A lot of kids passed with high grades they didn't deserve, as teachers didn't really care to check and see if that paper they handed in was bought or not. I know not all scholar are bad, nor are all teachers, but where I went to school, it was like that.
With this as the result? (I know I'm coming in late, but this little item in today's paper has depressed me all day)

I saw that article, and was thinking about it actually. One of my former professors posted it on Facebook. Education is a joke these days, with other things taking priority. I'm veering into political talking so I should stop.

Purple Noon was awesome BTW.
