No, you're right, it is old...

It would seem like a winner, but perhaps the source elements aren't up to snuff. As it is the recent SD restoration looks a bit waxy to me. But who knows.
I like my Kino Ultimate Edition DVD of Nosferatu, but I would be overjoyed if a suitable high definition transfer hit the shelves someday.

If there's no point, then there's no point, though. I'm also a big fan of 1925 version of The Phantom of the Opera, and, since that particular version is still in standard definition on the existing Blu-ray, I'm simply holding on to my Milestone Ultimate Edition DVD of that movie.

Assuming the framing issue was noticed prior to anything being released, MK2 made the call to not make a new master. So do you license and release as is, or wait for the license to come around again years from now and a new master to be made (no guarantee)?

I really don't blame them. In fact, I thank them for sparing us an Echo Bridge edition. Now if only they'd licensed Dead Man.
Yeah, it is just unfortunate. It doesn't sit right with me that they can't say something about this issue. Even if the obvious is true, in that it is all Mk2. Makes me very curious about what happened behind the scenes. Did they know that a new master will never happen? I don't blame them for releasing it either and am glad the set came out but it leaves us with a lot of questions.

Have there been any rumors as to whether Le doulos and/or Le deuxieme souffle will receive blu releases? I've been scouting the majority of Melville's catalog as of late and was considering picking up the Criterion DVDs if a future blu release seems unlikely.

Finished viewing Harakiri (1962) this morning. Great movie! Kept me transfixed all the way until the end. Very intense.

Not watching the remake, though. I don't watch remakes anymore.

I don't see anything on the horizon, but I am hoping to see both of these on Blu-ray.

I've owned the DVDs for years, though, and they're pretty amazing. If you can find the DVDs for a cheap price, go for it!

Nolan's Top 10 list really has me interested in the The Hit (1984).

The Hit is a good movie, and I own it on DVD, but I did not quite rank it on the level of many other Criterions that I own. It's good enough to watch multiple times, though, and I need to watch it again now that I have an HDTV, because it's that sort of film. It would probably look incredible on Blu-ray.

The movie has a cool build-up that did not quite pay off like I was hoping. Still, I recommend it.

You mean like that slick and sanitized Humphrey Bogart remake of THE MALTESE FALCON? Or that feminist remake of THE FRONT PAGE that cast Pat O'Brien's role with Rosalind Russell and retitled it HIS GIRL FRIDAY? Or maybe that overblown talkie remake of BEN-HUR in 1959 or the big-budget talkie remake of LORD JIM in 1965? And then there's always the Western versions of THE SEVEN SAMURAI and RASHOMON and YOJIMBO, which became THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, THE OUTRAGE, and A FISTFULL OF DOLLARS (not to mention LAST MAN STANDING). Or are you thinking mainly of things like THE AMAZING SPIDERMAN, GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO, and LET ME IN?

Seriously, though, the 1962 HARAKIRI is great, but the new version still sounds like it might be intriguing.

I really like Miike's 13 Assassins remake, and am really excited to watch his Harakiri remake, especially since it is available on streaming now.

One of the best sets Criterion has produced IMO is the Josef von Sternberg set. It's DVD, but if friends of mine are looking to try Silent films, this and Buster Keaton's The General are what I give them to start.

The man hanging from the clock is SAFETY LAST, a famous Harold Lloyd comedy.

And I wonder if the clown on the wire is MAN ON A TIGHTROPE, a film starring Frederic March, set in Communist Russia?

The other clock in the drawing shows 3:10, a reference to 3:10 TO YUMA (the original 1957 film starring Glenn Ford)?

Yes! Very happy to hear if that is indeed true.
Where did you find this picture? It wasn't in their latest e-mail which I just received today...

Yep! The artist tweeted he was working on cover art for it last week so it kind of killed the surprise.
