I understood what you meant. I really want to go watch Rosemary's Baby now.

I just ordered all three for $31.47, which qualifies me for free shipping. This looks to be cheaper than the upcoming Hitchcock bundle set with the three movies for $53, and I'd rather have the individual Blu-rays anyway.

I have no idea about whether or not Criterion has the rights to these movies anymore to upgrade them to Blu-ray, but I'm not holding my breath. That said, I'll probably see a Criterion announcement for these movies tomorrow, now that I've placed this order...haha.
Thanks for the heads up!

Hey folks,

This is only my second post but I have been lurking this thread and site for the last few months. Just want to say I really enjoy the mature discussion that occurs here which is greatly refreshing.

Anyway, I have a slightly off topic question that is not related to Criterion but is to classic / foreign films...

My wife and I are heading to NYC and Montreal in a few weeks and would love to check out at least one classic flick in a theater (something that I cannot do in this small town). Anyway, I have been checking out individual theaters and searching the net trying to find one site that gives an insight into upcoming releases of classic films being shown soon. To give you an idea of what I am looking for, I am VERY open. I am talking classic foreign (Playtime, 400 Blows, 8 1/2) to classic genre (Alien, Jaws, Halloween, House) to modern independent and foreign flicks (Dardennes Brothers films, Edward Yang, Wong Kar Wai)' etc, etc.

Any suggestions folks? Thanks in advice.

I love this Bunuel film, but I was hoping criterion would release it. Now I am hoping Phantom Liberty will be release by criterion, and not studio canal.

I hate the fact that they own the rights for Third Man and Ran. And now they are releasing Bunuel films. This is preposterous.
I was just listening to the ign digigods. A podcast about recent blu-ray releases and they go over each release. They had some nice insight on Bunuel.

Yep. Just finished Belle de Jour. 4.5/5 I really enjoyed it, and Catherine. Also liked the blonde at 9:43. whoever that was.

I am very glad you liked Bunuel's film. Pure surrealism. What's great about him is that all his films are very different, and unique. He is the master of dream logic. Condensation and symbolism are worked to perfection. There is depth in his imagery. The only down part is that some contemporary surreal films will feel superficial after watching surreal genius like Bunuel, Jodorowsky, Bergman.

I just saw the news about the new Bluray of Death in Venice in France.
I just hoped this could be a Criterion title someday.

And by most all accounts the Studio Canal edition of That Obscure Object of Desire is more than satisfactory.

I too prefer Repulsion to Rosemary's Baby - its use of location for atmosphere is incredible - but I can agree with the assertion that the former was a dress-rehearsal of sorts for the latter. Hadn't thought of that before, but it's an interesting way to see the two.
Thanks about commenting about That Obscure Object of Desire blu ray. I might have to bite the bullet. I really like criterion's packaging of that film on DVD. Oh well. I am sad to hear about Phantom liberty being OOP.

For sure, The Terrorizers (although this does have an English friendly release) and Taipei Story definitely deserve a spot in the collection too.

Yep. I'll definitely now be getting Repulsion though, as well as a little more research on Catherine. Now all I've got to do is decide which one is next.

It's like Sophie's freaking choice with these things

[Show spoiler]In order from right to left that I've watched so far, with Belle de Jour being the most recent. I'm thinking Paris, Texas will be next.

My opinion:

Some of my personal favs of all time:
- Three Colors (all films and in order)
- Double Life of Veronique

Very Good:
- Seven Samurai
- Breathless
- Rosemary's Baby

Good:
- Rashomon: in my opinion very over-rated. Good story but the acting is very, "eh" and it has become so canonized that no one will say anything bad about it.
- Night of the Hunter: another in the Rashmon category that has a few good aspects but is so dated and not timeless unlike other classics (400 Blows, Playtime, Seven Samurai as examples).

No hate intense here. Just my opinion.

Everything else:

I watched my Blu-ray of Léon Morin, Priest this evening. So glad that I upgraded this one!

It took me a couple of viewings to wrap my mind around Léon Morin, Priest, and this latest viewing was enjoyable across the board. Sometimes, the better movies that I end up revisiting frequently are the ones that I don't take to right away. The movie did not have a "homeworky" feel this time around, and I simply enjoyed the small asides about life in German-occupied France. As I've said many times here before, any films that even remotely involve French Resistance fascinate me, although I've never been to France and, in all honesty, I'm not as adept on French history as I'd like to be. I think that I gravitate to the concept of people putting themselves at risk to gladly let their lives be a drop in a bucket in the gradual attrition fight against an ultimate evil. The film does not delve full-tilt into this, as Melville's Army of Shadows does, but the small allusions (Morin assisting the Jews, etc.) are food for thought.

The real reward of this movie, for me, is watching the religious discussions between Barny and Morin, and enjoying the adept kicking back and forth of the questions. It's a rare instance that a movie allows us to observe lengthy conversations like this to get into the heads of the characters.

Great, great film.

Playtime if you can see that in 70mm (or 65 I can't recall) it will probably blow your mind.
