Yeah, I think it's the booklet that will tip me in favour of the MoC version.

For any and all fans of The Sweet Smell of Success please do yourself a favor and check out Olive's Force of Evil.

This isn't true, rkish

As usual, his only pretext for calling something better is looking at whether something is on BD50 or BD25. Which is absolutely irrelevant in this case. As is looking at bit rates and claiming that something is technically better because there is a minor discrepancy (for example, 26-29).

Higher bit rates do not equate better quality.

Single-layer discs do not equate inferior quality either.

If the above wasn't true, then every single distributor would be placing content on BD50s and maxing out bit rates, and we will have perfect releases across the board

BD25 is perfectly fine for Gate of Hell, and compression on the Criterion release is indeed very good.

Pro-B

Interesting. I'd previously considered the film but didn't find it sounded too appealing. However, I thought the same thing with Success when I'd only read about it and hadn't seen what a wonderful film it was. So your recommendation makes me want to look it up again.

..and on the subject, Abdrewes, I also enjoyed Milk of Sorrow, which I saw you posted about.

EDIT: I'm finding myself skipping a lot of posts because I don't want to know so much about these films that I haven't seen before.

All right, since only 1 person was interested in my earlier question, I'm taking my query directly to pro-bassoonist.

Milk of Sorrow is a real gem. I can see how you in particular would like it due to all the symbolism. But it never felt tacked on, everything feels germainr and integral to the narrative. The two "clipping" scenes come to mind as accomplishing exactly this. The "papa" is an obvious symbol, yes, but it provides a unique gateway into this particular girl's reality.

To be frank, Olive releases many esoteric B-movies and there are only a handful of must haves: Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Letter From an Unknown Woman, Bound, Johnny Guitar, Amer, Force of Evil & Milk of Sorrow.

I have The Quiet Man, Rio Grande, Body and Soul, Secret Beyond the Door, A Double Life & Carmen waiting to be watched, though.

Back to Criterion: my little brother has been getting into Hitchcock and instead of showing him 39 Steps and Lady Vanishes, I'm thinking Clouzot's Diabolique or Wages of Fear. I mean, if he really liked The Game, he's gonna be blown away by Clouzot

I am so glad to read such glowing reviews of the BADLANDS Criterion. I can not wait to have it ,but in actuality I can cause I'm waiting till the next B&N sale to get it. It is I feel one of the greatest American movies ever made.

Absolutely agree. I basically skipped reading an entire page of posts. Maybe no biggies in there, but I decided not to read any further. While I appreciate people's thoughts on these films, I'd ask them to please be considerate of others who may not have seen them yet, no matter how "long" it has been around. No harm in spoiler wrapping what could be key scenes or plot points that someone may want to experience for themselves. Just use a bit of judgement.

1. Badlands
2. The Tree Of Life
3. The Thin Red Line
4. Days Of Heaven

I loved "Badlands" the most because it was a unique film and an excellent character study into the lives of two lonely individuals. A lot of us can relate to them, but not in the same way. I liked "The Tree Of Life" secondly because it was a beautiful film and it had a lot of great messages that one could make out from simple shots of the environment. "The Thin Red Line" was the third Malick film I liked because it was an excellent war story and it was very realistic. It had a lot of great moments throughout the film, specifically the interactions between the band of brothers. Lastly, "Days Of Heaven" was the film I loved the least. It resembled Badlands in many ways, but it wasn't as dark and gritty, in my opinion.

I really recommend Badlands. It was my most anticipated film of the month and I don't regret it for one moment. The picture quality was great, but I felt that the audio quality was lacking just a smidge. Overall, a great release from the great Criterion Collection! The fact that it was inspired by a true story makes it all the better. 10/10
You are very brave to give your ranking of Malick films. I find each of his films very different and unique. I can not say to prefer one over another; I find them all equal in subjective value.

Cinematographers Nestor Almendros and Haskell Wexler; Ennio Morricone's haunting score makes Days of Heaven one of the greatest movie experiences. I can say the same thing for each of his movies.

Those sunsets are amazing.
