I can't wait. I saw A Man Escaped years ago on the New Yorker dvd release, and loved it, so I'm really looking forward to the upgrade. Although it's not my favorite Bresson film - that's Balthazar, which I'd also be happy to see upgraded soon.

My favorite Bresson is Pickpocket, however I think it is the only one of his films I've seen. So We will see how much I love A Man Escaped.

Already did a reservation at Barnes & Noble next week for Richard III (so far rumor is that they will have it April 2nd as an exclusive. Criterion themselves releasing it April 9th and then Amazon April 23.

Just finished A Man Escaped and I loved it.

It was a very good suspense film that was based on a true story. The fact that the movie covered such an issue as escaping from a prison at such an early point in film history makes it all the better, in my opinion.

It wasn't over dramatized, which I liked because I found it to be more believable. We see shows like Prison Break (which I love) and other average escape films and they're overly Hollywoodized that they are often overlooked from time to time.

A really great film, and I really recommend it.

By the way, François Leterrier looks so much like DJ Qualls.

For anyone who is region free, I highly suggest Ben Wheatley's Sightseers. It just came out on blu in the UK. I think it'd make a stellar double feature with Badlands.

Thanks for the positive review!

I love prison escape movies. Escape from Alcatraz, The Shawshank Redemption, The Great Escape, and, of course, the brilliant Le Trou and Brute Force, both of which are Criterion DVDs. My all-time favorite novel happens to be the full translation of The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, so I guess I'm naturally inclined to this type of storyline.

I'm expecting A Man Escaped to be different than the above films from what I've heard, but different in a great way.

Soon. I shall buy this at the next Barnes & Noble sale or even buy it from Movie Stop if they have it for a good price there this week.

That's a matter of opinion...I prefer his silents as well (wish they had released "The Kid" first, as it's one of my favorite Chaplin films), but Verdoux is a good film and the best of his later "talkies".

I'm going to Best Buy tomorrow to hit the individual stand-alone Blu-ray of the first Jurassic Park movie while it is on sale for a low price. (I don't care for the other two movies, so I've avoided the existing trilogy set.). The new Depeche Mode CD will be mine tomorrow as well.
You and iScottie should really get Hulu Plus. It should always be about access to the films and not "how good they look". If you see a film that you like enough, you can always buy it at a later time...especially when it's on sale. Streaming quality on Hulu is quite good and there are a ton of great Criterion films to check out.

I saw "A Man Escaped"'on Hulu and will possibly/likely add it to my collection during the next sale. It's a lot cheaper than blind buying. The only ones with an alibi are those like Joe with a great library that "rents" Criterion titles, or those that don't have access to it.

Heh, no, this is the strange part...

I’m going to go back next year actually. I’ve been asked by Warner Brothers because they did so well with ‘The Final Cut’. They actually sold more than a million copies.

That's a lotta five dollar three-packs

I've seen some rather impressive movies on Hulu (usually through Hulu links on imdb.com). When I pimped The Wages of Fear on Facebook recently, I linked a free streaming version via Hulu (because I don't mind the ads on those movies when I'm just trying to sample something.).

Not quite Criterion-related, but some may be interested. I just found out through a conversation in another thread that a Region A Blu-ray of Anton Corbijn's Control (the biopic of Ian Curtis from Joy Division) exists in Canada. I found it on Amazon for $12.99.

It's one of my favorite recent films, and I have been longing for a proper Region A release since I acquired a Blu-ray player. I did not realize that one was available from Canada.

This will sit well on my shelf next to Anton Corbijn's The American.

I just watched For All Mankind. I put it on to kill sometime because I was waiting for some people to come home before putting on a couple other films.

I honestly wasn't expecting to like it as I am not a fan of documentaries or sci-fi / space by any means. However, after watching the film, I can easily say it is in my favorite films released by Criterion.

What an amazing film about one of the biggest events in our world! I loved the first-person perspectives and the actual recordings. Such a breathtaking moment in our history and a wonderful treasure released by Criterion.

Yes. I hope Criterion releases more on Blu-ray.

I was really impressed by the directing and other various aspects of the film, so I'm curious as to what else he put out similar to AME.

You will really like it. I found a few flaws with the film. For example, the subtitles move relatively quick at a few spots and there were a few minutes in the film that were a bit of a drag. However, it was a really great film, especially for its time.

I have surprisingly not seen Escape From Alcatraz or The Great Escape (May!), but I have seen The Shawshank Redemption, the complete series of Prison Break, and many others alike. I think this one and The Shawshank are the top two that I have seen thus far.

You will definitely like it!

Thanks for the suggestion! I will check it out as I have seen several titles available on there and have been curious about seeing them.

yessss!!!! I'd put For All Mankind up there with the best of Pennebaker, Wiseman, and Morris. Along with Baraka and Koyaanisqatsi, it's one of the most transcendental documentaries I've ever seen.

I know many won't have this reaction, but, Brian Eno's score made me well up a few times.

I was never really intrigued by For All Mankind until I found out that Brian Eno worked on the score.

I'm basically admitting to the forum that I'm a big dumb animal (although I'm sure that most already figured that), because I've owned Brian Eno's Apollo: Atmospheres And Soundtracks on CD for years, but never put two and two together to realize that it was the score for the Criterion film.

"An Ending (Ascent)" for the win.

I just got The Game in the mail and I just love the hard plastic case compared to all the other flimsy Blu-ray cases in my collection. Criterion's films and presentation is just so classy.
