I wouldn't say it's impossible, because these hints tend to be for release further down the road. So it could be a hint for a release of Frances Ha around winter time.

The guesses on Twitter seem to be either Frances Ha, although some doubt they would hint about a movie before its theatrical release, or To Be or Not to Be.

Wait, so Criterion actually came out with a clue that people are unable to guess right away??

Thanks for posting. Like everybody has been saying, it probably is Frances Ha, even though it isn't out yet. That means that it would be one of the first films Criterion ever released fresh from theaters. Plus, I'm pretty sure that Criterion still has a connection with IFC.

How ironic that "Ha" is on France while everything else involves pointless laughter synonyms to throw the viewer off.

Best Criterion Top 10 ever!

Andrew Loog Oldham has a keen taste in cinema, y'all.

I know, that happened to me . . . I watched the movie, and was craving couscous for days, and ended up having some extra trips to my local middle eastern food joint.

Any time escape films are mentioned, I must include As Far As My Feet Will Carry Me. Truly sensational film based on a true story. (I have the Hong Kong release).

Thank you for the recommendations, Pro-B!

I actually have the book, As Far As My Feet Will Carry Me, on my shelf. It sits next to The Long Walk: The True Story of a Trek to Freedom by Slavomir Rawicz, from which the underrated Peter Weir film, The Way Back, is based. Weir's The Way Back was one of the first Blu-rays that I purchased after I bought my setup.

Funnily enough, I did not find out about these books through movie circles. The books are popular in the ultrarunning community, and several friends of mine on an ultrarunning email list recommended them to me. I'd love to see the movie version of As Far As My Feet Will Carry Me, though.

The Tunnel looks to be right up my alley as well.

Thanks again!

Frances Ha would be a neat addition. (Obviously) haven't seen it yet, but any Baumbach film being added to the collection is a good thing. I'd like to see a Criterion release of The Squid and the Whale .

I like the list, too, but a lot from France . . . nothing from Japan, Germany, Russia, other US stuff . . . not that we need every country heard from, but his list could be somewhat more diverse . . . at the same time, it's clear that much of the list is grounded in autobiographical relationships to these films, and in his descriptions that gut feeling of life-changing movie experiences (via Melville, Godard, and Chabrol) is nicely evoked.

Those foods are off-limits to me normally, because I follow a Paleo Diet lifestyle. Of course, I'll probably get a kick out of the movie nonetheless. A recent trailer that I watched looks great.

My own Criterion favorites list would go along the same lines...
Le Samouri, Army of Shadows, Le Cercle Rouge, Touches Pas Au Grisbi, Bob Le Flambeur, and The Wages of Fear would probably all be featured in my Top Ten.

That's cool, and those are all amazing films. I especially like in Le Cercle Rouge the scene where he drives the car through the mud, out into the middle of the field, opens the trunk, and with pistols pointed at each other they share and smoke cigarettes.

Makes me think of the 17-minute shot from Hunger that was being discussed on this forum a couple of days ago . . . where Bobby Sands and the priest share cigarettes (if I remember, Fassbender smokes three during the scene).

If there is any Baumbach film I want Criterion to give its treatment to, Frances Ha would be my choice. I'm dying to see it again.

Isn't it great? That scene always makes me smile, and it's the sort of moment that draws me to cinema in the first place.

I personally enjoyed it more than The Squid and The Whale, but that's definitely not a shot at that film either.

I used to own the DVDs of both Margot At The Wedding and The Squid And The Whale. I never watched them and have since parted with them.

Maybe Blu-ray soon? I understand that TSATW is available in a Double Feature, but I'd personally prefer a single release. Running With Scissors does not interest me at all.

I dig when Criterion gets behind "modern" releases like this. I approve.

Gives me hope for a To The Wonder release, however slight.
