Thanks, I'll try to finally write some of the Criterions in my collection. I haven't been able to revisit some of my favorite releases for my stack of Blind Buys and $1 DVDs has held me back.

Criterion posted this a little while ago on their site:

Dear Criterion collectors,

We wanted to let you know that the following titles are going out of print effective March 31:

Army of Shadows

Le cercle rouge

Le doulos

Last Year at Marienbad

Léon Morin, Priest

Mafioso

We have limited stock on hand, and will be selling copies through the 31st, while supplies last. As in the past, we hope to relicense the films so that they can rejoin the collection sometime in the future.

Sincerely,
The Criterion Collection

Your signature reminded me that I still need to see Boogie Nights for the first time so I added it to my Netflix queue, along with Magnolia.

Hmm...all of the Melville's are pretty much going OOP except Le Deuxième Souffle, Le Samourai, and Les Enfants Terribles.

I may pick up Le Doulos.

And here's hoping for a Criterion release of Le Silence de la Mer.

For clarity's sake, the DVDs of the first four are also going OOP.

Masters of Cinema's release is one of their few region free discs. Criterion putting it out would be a complete waste of a spine, no?

Wow. Glad that I grabbed the Melville films and Last Year at Marienbad so quickly early on.

(I kept my old DVDs of Army of Shadows and Le Cercle Rouge, just in case anything ever happens to my Blu-rays. I'm such a fanboy of those movies that I'm oddly tempted to buy back-up Blu-rays, but I won't go that far.)

Does anyone know if Criterion every regains the license rights to any films that go out of print?

The MOC disc of Le Silence de la Mer is fantastic. The essay is insanely thorough, and goes beyond anything I've read in a movie booklet before.

The region-free MOC edition looks unbeatable to my eyes, but I would still fork over for a Criterion edition.

Here's my Jean-Pierre Melville collection so far...

DVD
Les Enfants Terribles
Bob Le Flambeur
Le Doulos
Le Deuxième Souffle
Le Samouraï
Army of Shadows
Le Cercle Rouge
Un Flic

Blu-ray
Le Silence De La Mer
Leon Morin, Priest
Army of Shadows
Le Cercle Rouge

We need the remaining Melville films released in some form or fashion. I'd love to see Two Men in Manhattan and Magnet of Doom someday.

I doubt it. I think Criterion would only release them IF they could release all 3 in a set. They wouldn't want the first 2, then have someone else put out the final film in the trilogy. So I'd imagine if it is going to happen, then it would be one of their year-end box sets containing all the films, since Midnight should be hitting blu around Oct/Nov.

If you decide to purchase, the best place is always Eureka's own store:

http://www.eurekavideo.co.uk/offers/offers.html

Free delivery to the states, competitive prices, sturdy packaging and excellent customer service.

I usually drop off to sleep easily if I get an afternoon workout after work and eat an early dinner. One habit of mine is to start watching a familiar film that I've seen many many times over (Star Wars, etc.) and just doze off about a half hour into the movie.

I just noticed that you have Nobody Knows on your list of wanted Blu-ray releases. I saw that movie in the theater when it was released here in Atlanta many years ago, and it really broke my heart.

Agreed. I'll admit, I'm partial to Criterion and a devoted, hopeless collector of their spines regardless of existing availability.

But, yes, this does raise the question of opportunity cost, if it's inefficient for Criterion to devote resources and spine-number-space to a title available in a quality format/package elsewhere.

Wow, I haven't seen that Koreeda film, I'm going to put it on my "rent" lest.

I just ordered a copy of Army of Shadows as a backup copy. It is one of my favorites. Thanks for the heads up.
