Some might not consider it horror, but I would add Pan's Labyrinth in there.

That Carrie trailer looks like the same movie with a ton of CGI FX and over the top deaths. Plus as much as I like Chloe she's too good looking IMO to fit the Carrie role. Sissy Spacek not only looked the part, but did a find job acting it. I'm not a huge De Palma fan, but besides the cheesy ending Carrie is a pretty flawless picture.

I agree with you about Let the Right One In. I even wrote about it in a chapter of my dissertation. As for other films, there have been some very interesting ones, but I would be hard pressed to name truly great ones. Of course, truly great films of any kind are few and far between.

I don't know if it's just a perception I have but in recent time I have notice that someone's passing who once would have brough good, nice comments about their legacy and life's work are replace these days by most people just being nasty and just bring out all the negative stuff. I don't know if it's just me who have this feeling but I have seen this a lot.

Why, is the MGM disk OOP already?

I suppose a nice discussion on the subject is nice but the arguing frankly I just can't really go for it. It serve nothing much. In general I like this thread because even if things can get a little nasty at times, it's still so much more nice compared to some of the stuff going on in other threads.

I entirely agree with you.

It is a lack of maturity and respect to bring up negative comments about an individual on the day of their death.

Some people do not realize, there might be a relative or a friend surfing these sites. Not only do they have to deal with the death of their loved one, but also to read these ridiculous comments.

I am glad that this thread had entirely positive posts about Mr. Ebert. There are many posters that know about criterion because of him.

Most of the time, the level of maturity of some posters is obvious.

My apologies if this has been stated, I did a search and didn't find anything, but for those curious to see Etaix's criterion movies before the release, they'll be shown on TCM on april 16th

I viewed it last weekend. It looks good. There appears to be print damage but it's very strong overall. I'm happy

Just a few places where I notice a few things that just were wrong with it but yes overall it was a good release. Got to love what Criterion does. I will be checking out Les Enfants Du Paradis later tonight in HD. I heard the Blu-ray was not so good and since it's well over $40 here I wil take this chance to sort of have a look at the image before making my final decision on it

Opinion requested. Order placed with importcds that day that the OOP announcement was made for "Le Doulos". At the time was already backordered.

In an email they stated they hoped all orders would be fulfilled but could not promise. Do I cancel and take my chances elsewhere or hold out only to be possibly be disappointed?

I can't state it any stronger... if you have stock at a local Barnes & Noble 40.00 or bust I say get your copies there. If you can order from a third party seller that can confirm they have stock on amazon and have great feedback that is another option.

I don't mean any offense but I ordered stock of a new release CD a couple months ago from Import CDs and stated if I placed my order by a certain time it would ship the same day... needless to say 3-4 business days later still NOT shipped and finally they just canceled my order. I would pay retail price for an OOP Criterion at Barnes anyday before I risk taking chances on online retailer stock.

I think if you can find it ina local store, even if it's more expensive it would be better. I head too many times on here how people where disapointed by Importcd during sales and they don't have the stocks

Thanks for the heads up. I've got that set on my maybe list and it will be nice to be able to move it up or down before July rolls around.

I don't know why but I've been having a very hard time warming up to Chaplin. The Great Dictator was okay and after a few tries each I still haven't been able to finish Modern Times or The Gold Rush. I've really taken a liking to silents over the past year or so and I love Buster Keaton but Chaplin just doesn't do it for me.

That all said, I haven't completely ruled it out for July because it does sound pretty interesting.

I got it the day it came out and watched it a couple days later.

I absolutely loved it and I think it's my favorite Chaplin film that I've seen thus far. Quality was excellent and highly recommended by me!

Unfortunately, I'm in a metro area and they were sold out immediately. I used to manage one of the stores actually so luckily, I'd be in the know if stock showed up. As of now, I've found a good deal online that I know has stock and can ship tomorrow, unlike the unknown with import.

Does anyone know when you cancel through them how long it takes for the PayPal refund to show up?

The features (Dictator, Verdoux) could be a little "preachy" with the sound-speeches and lay on the Pathos....Just a warning by the time we get to Limelight.
If you want to try Chaplin in short doses, look up a few of the Mutual shorts (The Rink, The Pawnshop, The Immigrant) that Chaplin still directed and creatively lorded over, but just for a straight commercial comedy audience. The Chaplin Revue, with "Shoulder Arms" and Chaplin soundtrack, is also a good source.

There's better feature humor in The Kid, City Lights and The Circus, but they have to get through the preachy famous ones first.

I'd say get both if you can. Both are great choices, but also, Criterion discs that go out of print are ones you will regret not at least attempting to get when the price skyrockets later. Not all do, mind you, but many, especially the blu-ray editions do. And hey, if you don't like them, sell them!!

Hard for me to explain, Chaplin as been a favorite of mine since I was a kid. I saw most of his shorts and movies before I was in highschool. Since those days he's been just someone I got all of his movies made available on different formats. The only think I can see as why sometime Chaplin can rub people the wrong way is that many of his stories can be preachy and that can turn off people. He never hide that fact either, the preaching is in your face with no excuses at all. He really just throw's it at you like there is no tomorrow
