A perfect artistic representation of a movie that's like watching a white painted wall dry.

In HS I had a teacher that told us she painted her bedroom walls black when she was a teen. She also had a noose in her room. Her contract was not renewed for the next school year.

Ooh ooh! The oneupmanship game!

The dance and drama teacher at my HS used to brag about stripping her way through college, and was an academic advisor. She's still there, yet the school almost didn't allow the English teacher to take us to the theatre to watch The Best Little *****house in Texas, live on stage, and outright forbid him from taking kids to see rocky horror.

Autocorrect made that even more obscene. Beagle her grandmother? Holy shit snacks.

I guess octagon put it better than I did on the previous page. Since for me it was a pleasurable thing, I'm more inclined to find the film superficial in its depiction... and the reason I still find it great is everything about how it looks visually.

I'd be interested in knowing how you react to Mad Men. I know you posted about loving the start, but I wonder if you'll like it more later on or if your interest will start to fade...it seems to go either way with most fans.

For me I feel the quality has significantly declined after season 4, for other fans it's at the best it's ever been right now.
Well I'm really interested in advertising ever since I took a journalism class my freshman year. It's interesting to see what people will do and say in order to get a product sold, despite how good or bad it is.

I also feel that season 5 has seen a drop off in quality, though I guess it's an achievement how long Mad Men sustained its greatness for. Season 4 is probably my favourite season, The Suitcase episode blows me away every time I watch it. Some parts of season 5 just felt out of place,
[Show spoiler]the Hare Krishna thing seemed a bit anecdotal and was given too much airtime, the whole Lane story with the money felt completely shoehorned in and I didn't really feel anything when he went even though I really liked his character, and my biggest problem with the season was that they seemed to forget that in The Suitcase they made Peggy Don's surrogate mother, they shared a genuine human connection that Don hadn't received since Dick's wife, yet he spent season 5 acting the same way he did towards her in the first seasons. One of the only things I can credit to season 5 was that they didn't have Don sleep with Joan
. However I'm still interested enough in season 6.

I prefer original poster art. When not available, I like very simple but elegant designs.

For contemporary cinema, I really liked the cover for Hunger.

Thanks for the response. Those are great covers. I agree with you that the original movie poster makes the best cover.

I think my next criterion blind buys are going to be repo man and Monterrey pop festival. I'm on a huge concert blu ray kick nowadays and I saw the cast and outline of Repo Man and I think it looks good.

Season 5 for me is a great transitional season, showing how everything is changing but at the end some things stay the same. I'm a little biased tough because I am a big fan.

We usually don't have weird teachers like that here but at my old school teachers would not come back because of us

No joke here but we had 5 different economic teachers one year and if I recall we also had three different religious studies teachers

I think the comprehensive version is best, hands down. It fixes a continuity error that is present in the other two versions, smooths out some awkward edits, and has some additional footage not in the other two. There is yet another version that is not on the Criterion set, I think this may be available on some of the PD versions, this is the one that starts with the body washed up on the beach, which I think is the version I first saw years ago -- I'm pretty sure the comprehensive version beats this one as well.

Note that the comprehensive version has footage taken from a workprint and other dupe sources, so a few of the images are a little ragged, but nothing that's too distracting IMO.

The only thing that I think could be improved in the comprehensive version is
[Show spoiler]Arkadin tells the famous "scorpion and frog" story, but also tells another, similar one -- it's too much of a repetition, I think the second story could be left out.
It's a small complaint though.

You are correct, shortmartin, about Bresson's minimalist approach to film making. I really like his style. For anyone who likes Bresson, A Man Escaped, is a must-see. I believe it is also a great place to start exploring his films.
A Man Escaped is a marvelous Criterion title. My mind was blown when I watched it a week and half ago, and I'll be revisiting it again soon. The sound editing is truly something else.

Sadly, I have not seen any of the other Bresson films. I plan to pick them off one by one as they are released on Blu-ray in the future. (Hopefully released on Blu-ray, that is.)

placed an order for Last Year at Marienbad on Amazon yesterday. Hope they get more in.

Should have pulled the trigger on Army of Shadows as I've seen that and really enjoyed it

Has anyone else watched the Badlands extras yet? The interviews with Sheen, Spacek and Fisk are great.

It's really cool hearing how much Sheen genuinely appreciated being given the chance to do Badlands.

I watched Badlands for the first time last week (never seen the movie) and thought it was great!

Haven't watched the extras yet.

Yes! I like the current interviews, because Sheen and Spacek are both as sharp as ever and their recollections are a lot of fun.

The Starkweather documentary is not all that, but it is pretty informative with respect to the events that inspired the film.
